Book Elements of Plant Anatomy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elements of Plant Anatomy Classic Reprint written by Emily L. Gregory and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Plant Anatomy This book contains the substance of the lectures given to the classes in the last half of the second year's course in botany, at Barnard College. The method followed in this course differs somewhat from that generally adopted in either home or foreign colleges. The study of botany, as a science, is comparatively new in this country, and therefore we have the advantage of the experience of Europe, where the science of botany has long held a place equal in rank with that of its related subjects. Book Physiological Plant Anatomy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Physiological Plant Anatomy Classic Reprint written by G. Haberlandt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiological Plant Anatomy Since its first appearance in 1884, Professor Haberlandt's Physiologische Pflanzenanatomie has undergone revision and amplification on three successive occasions. In its present form, therefore, this work may be assumed to embody the mature and considered views of its author, with regard to that section of botanical science which he has made peculiarly his own. In order to retain, as far as possible, the fluency which is a prominent and agreeable feature of the original text, I have not scrupled to translate with some freedom, where necessary; at the same time, I have taken every care to ensure that the author's meaning should be faithfully reproduced throughout. The limited number of words and phrases for the insertion of which I am personally responsible, - for example the term photosynthesis on p.262 - are distinguished by being enclosed within square brackets. I desire to record my indebtedness to my wife for assistance in proof-revision and in the compilation of the indices, and to Professor F.0. Bower, Sc.D., F.E.S., for much helpful advice and encouragement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Elements of Botany Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elements of Botany Classic Reprint written by Joseph Y. Bergen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Botany It will be found that this book differs from most American text-books designed for use in secondary schools, in endeavor ing to combine in one volume the simplest possible directions for laboratory work with an outline of vegetable anatomy and physiology, and a brief statement of the principles of botani cal classification. An account of the functions of the tissues or organs described usually follows as closely as may be the account of the parts in question. The attempt is made to disciiss' plants dynamically rather than statically, to view them as contestants in the struggle for existence, and to con sider some of the conditions of success and failure in the vegetable world. While the determination of species by means of an artifical key is illustrated, preparation for this process is by no means the main object or even a principal end which the author has had in view. The tendency of botany-teaching seems to be more and more away from the old ideal of enabling one's pupils to run down a species as expeditiously as possible, and teaching them how to preserve a properly ticketed memento of the chase. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant Anatomy: From the Standpoint of the Development and Functions of the Tissues and Handbook of Micro-Technic In getting ready the second edition it became evident that a chapter on reproduction should he added. Because of its promise in helping to solve the problem of evolution and its great importance for plant and animal breeding the subject of reproduction and heredity has come to the forefront of biological research; and especially under the great light that has shone from Mendel's laws has eager investigation been directed toward the details of cell behavior in reproduction. It cannot yet be said that these investigations have arrived at undisputed achievement, but their results, however tentative, are so suggestive of important possibilities as to justify their survey in a text-book for students in colleges and agricultural schools. Necessarily that part of the chapter on reproduction dealing with an interpretation of observed nuclear behavior that has frequently been suggested in current literature is a fit subject for critical examination and debate, and as such it will sere its purpose of marking a present-day view arising from a contemplation of observed facts of structure and behavior. The theory of pangenes and unit characters may or may not stand as our knowledge advances, but it is serving the purpose in biology to-day that the atomic theory has so long and honorably fulfilled in chemistry. Download or read book Plant Anatomy written by Richard Crang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended as a text for upper-division undergraduates, graduate students and as a potential reference, this broad-scoped resource is extensive in its educational appeal by providing a new concept-based organization with end-of-chapter literature references, self-quizzes, and illustration interpretation. The concept-based, pedagogical approach, in contrast to the classic discipline-based approach, was specifically chosen to make the teaching and learning of plant anatomy more accessible for students. In addition, for instructors whose backgrounds may not primarily be plant anatomy, the features noted above are designed to provide sufficient reference material for organization and class presentation. This text is unique in the extensive use of over 1150 high-resolution color micrographs, color diagrams and scanning electron micrographs. Another feature is frequent side-boxes that highlight the relationship of plant anatomy to specialized investigations in plant molecular biology, classical investigations, functional activities, and research in forestry, environmental studies and genetics, as well as other fields. Each of the 19 richly-illustrated chapters has an abstract, a list of keywords, an introduction, a text body consisting of 10 to 20 concept-based sections, and a list of references and additional readings. At the end of each chapter, the instructor and student will find a section-by-section concept review, concept connections, concept assessment (10 multiple-choice questions), and concept applications. Answers to the assessment material are found in an appendix. An index and a glossary with over 700 defined terms complete the volume.

However, a few notes on these topics which may prove valuable to both the teacher and student in the use of this book are included under the Appendix. Since teaching methods vary, especially with respect to the nature of the record which the student is required to make of his laboratory work, each exercise contains a list of suggested drawings and special topical reports. This, it is hoped, will per mit of selection on the part of the teacher in accordance with the time and emphasis placed on a given topic. Download or read book Elements of Plant Biology Classic Reprint written by Arthur George Tansley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Plant Biology The problem, then, is to provide, under these conditions, a course of teaching which shall be as interesting as possible and shall serve to introduce the student to the fundamental facts and principles of biology, both as part of his training for life and more particularly as an introduction to the study of medicine, which, as has often been said, is really a specialised branch of applied biology. The time is past when we could hope to give the budding medical student a thorough training in elementary botany and zoology, and with the ever increasing complexity of the medical curriculum proper there is constant pressure to shorten and simplify the preparatory parts. It seems to me that biologists should yield to this pressure to a reasonable extent, and frankly ask themselves how far the things that have been traditionally taught really serve as the best introduction to biology for medical students under existing conditions.
