Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Human Physiology When, now two years ago, at the solicitation of several friends, I undertook the translation of Professor Hermann's 'Elements of Physiology, ' I was actuated by the conviction, shared in by nearly all teachers, that an urgent need existed for an English text-book which should represent the actual state of the science. It appeared to me, at the same time, that no text-book on Physiology existed in any European language at once so concise, comprehensive, and philosophical as the work which I now introduce to the English reader, and I therefore undertook its translation. During the progress of my task, which a multiplicity of occupations caused to be a more protracted one than I had anticipated, my early convictions as to the excellence of the work have steadily deepened. Indulged them selves in frequent excursion into the vast field of accessory sciences, and have, without necessity, incorporated in their works whole chapters on air, on sound, on light, and other subjects, which belong to the depart' ment of natural philosophy and chemistry. Haller himself is not entire ly free of blame, for having discredited physiology by this borrowed dis play. I have introduced only such general ideas of the subject, 'as were absolutely necessary to render my own intelligible, and were, indeed, too close y connected with it, to admit of separation. Download or read book A Text Book of Physiology Vol 1 of 2 written by John Gray M'Kendrick and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104 Book of Physiology, Vol. 1 of 2: General Physiology Although this work has been modelled to some extent on my "Outlines of Physiology," now out of print, it is essentially a new book, and as it aims at giving a more detailed account of the subject, the title of "Outlines of Physiology" has been abandoned for that of a "d104 Book of Physiology." I have not endeavoured to give anything like an encyclopaedic account of the modern researches that have built up the physiological science of the present time, but rather to weave into a consecutive narrative the main facts and principles of physiology, as these present themselves to my mind, after nearly eighteen years of experience as a teacher of the science. Probably no science is advancing with greater rapidity, if one may form an opinion from the large number of original papers that are announced, month by month, and from the large number of investigators in the physiological laboratories of the Continent, of America, and of our own country. Thus it is year by year becoming more difficult for a teacher to keep abreast of the wave of progress, and still more difficult to assimilate the new facts and to incorporate them with his previous knowledge. Each teacher will also view the subject more especially according to his prodilections for the morphological, the chemical, or the physical side of the science, and it is not easy in the preparation of such a work as this to be impartial and to present the science in all its completeness to the reader. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Physiology: Including Physiological Anatomy, for the Use of the Medical Student Tns present volume owes its origin to a desire on the part of the Publisher, that an elementary treatise on Physiology should be added to the series of admirable Students' Manuals, on the various depart ments of Medical Science, which he had previously issued. In carrying this desire into execution, the Author has endeavored to avoid inflicting upon the class for whose use the Treatise is especially intended, the injury of placing in their hands such a superficial and imperfect sketch of the science, as, whilst affording them but a limited amount of knowledge of its facts, should leave them very ill-informed as to its general doctrines. His object has rather been to convey to the Student as clear an idea as possible of those Principles of Physiology which are based on the broadest and most satisfactory foundation, and to point out the mode in which these principles are applied to the explanation of the phenomena presented by the living actions of the Human body. In this manner has the Author desired to prepare him for that more detailed study of the latter, which becomes necessary when Physiology is pursued (as it ought to be) in connexion with the changes produced in the living body by Morbific and Remedial Agents, and is thus taken as a guide in the study of the causes, prevention, and treat ment of Disease - which should be the primary object of attention with every one who undertakes the practice of his Profession. Download or read book A Text Book of Physiology Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by M. Foster and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text Book of Physiology, Vol. 1 In the present edition I have made considerable changes and additions; but in the changes I have tried to maintain the character of the book as presented in previous editions; and the additions, with the exception of the histological paragraphs, are caused not by any attempt to add new matter or to enlarge the general scope of the work, but by an effort to explain more fully and at greater length what seem to me to be the most fundamental and most important topics. I have been led to introduce some histological statements, not with the view of in any way relieving the student from the necessity of studying distinct histological treatises, but in order to bring him to the physiological problem with the histological data fresh in his mind. I have therefore dealt very briefly with the several histological points and confined myself to matters having a physiological bearing. My friends Dr Gaskell, Mr Langley and Dr Lea have given me great assistance throughout, and their names might fitly appear on the title page, were it not that the present arrangement makes me alone responsible for all shortcomings. I have also to thank my senior demonstrator Mr L. E. Shore, M.B. and my junior demonstrator Mr Wingfield, M.A. for much valuable aid. The second and third parts will follow this first part as soon as possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An American d104-Book of Physiology, Vol. 1 Advantage has been taken of the necessity of issuing a second edition of the American d104 - Book of Physiology to alter somewhat its general arrangement. The book has proved to be successful, and for the most part has met only with kindly and encouraging Criticisms from those who have made use of it. Many teachers, however, have suggested that the size of the book, when issued in a single volume, has constituted to some extent an inconvenience when regarded from the standpoint of a student's text-book that may be needed daily for consultation in the lecture-room or the labora tory. It has been thought best, therefore, to issue the present edition in two volumes, with the hope that the book may thereby be made more serviceable to those for whose aid it was especially written. Book Human Physiology Vol 1 of 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Human Physiology Vol 1 of 4 Classic Reprint written by Luigi Luciani and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology, Vol. 1 of 4 "Good wine needs no bush," but it will perhaps not be an infringement of this maxim to introduce, in a few words, Professor Luciani's excellent Text-Book of Physiology to the English-reading public. The Italian Text-book is now in its third edition, the final pages being in the Press. One or other of the earlier editions has been translated into French, German, and Russian, and it is a matter for surprise that we have had to wait so long for an English version. In the making of physiological text-books, we are at the parting of the ways. The physiologists of the past generation were brought up to know with familiarity all that had been recently done in physiological research, whether in vertebrates or invertebrates, in animals or in plants. The facts were not so numerous that they could not be stored in the memory without cumbering the judgment, and Physiologists could in some sort be first-hand authorities on all branches of the subject. That condition has been gradually passing away, and it is hardly possible for any one who is not of the old school to write an advanced text-book covering the whole ground of Physiology. Thus the text-book of single authorship is giving way to the text-book of multiple authorship. The latter, whatever its merits, has not the unity of view and the sense of proportion which belong to the former - qualities very important in a book intended for students. Professor Luciani's book, whilst describing phenomena with considerable detail, treats lucidly the broad principles to be deduced from them. It stands midway between the text-book which confines itself to summing up the results of physiological investigation, and that which gives also a minute historical account of the progress of investigation.
