This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 774 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Ore and Stone Mining The object of my text-book is to assist students in acquiring a knowledge of the art of mining. Books and lectures are not intended to take the place of practical teaching at mines, but they render the training more thorough and complete in many ways: they serve to explain the principles of the art, to solve difficulties which perplex the beginner, to suggest matters which he should observe, to tell him of things beyond his ken, and to supply him with a system for arranging his ideas methodically. It will be seen by my numerous references that I have not hesitated to avail myself of very varied sources of informa tion, and that I have taken care to avoid dwelling too much upon English examples. Book Mines and Mining in the Black Hills Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mines and Mining in the Black Hills Classic Reprint written by Burlington Missouri River Railroad Co and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-24 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mines and Mining in the Black Hills South Dakota as a state presents some striking features. In the matter of altitude there are wide divergencies. Big Stone Lake is only 967 feet above sea level, nearly 200 feet lower than Omaha, and Harney Peak towers up feet. There are plains as level as a oor along James river valley, and narrow canons hundreds of feet deep in the Black Hills. There are areas where for scores of square miles one searches in vain for a stone, and there are districts which present an almost unbroken surface of rock, and barren places there are which are so saturated with acids and mineral solutions as to be utterly worthless; and again, there are a few ancient lake beds, forever decaying, barren and desolate - Bad Lands, as they are aptly termed. The Black Hills proper have an area of about square miles, and their true limit is marked distinctly by a sharp ridge of sandstone 300 to 600 feet in height. This ridge is separated from the higher part of the Hills within by Red valley. The altitude of the Hills runs from 3, 500 to feet. Ten of the geologic ages are represented in the rock formation of this wonderful region and the scientists say that but two of the universal organic elements are lacking here and that this condition does not exist anywhere else in the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hidden Mines, and How to Find Them: Contains the Information Called for by the Ordinary Business Man, Who Is Interested for Business Reasons Only, in Mines, Metals and Ores The use of scientific terms has been avoided where possible, and when used, care has been taken to explain their meaning and application. In short this work is intended for the benefit of the business man, the investor, the ranger, the settler, and those generally, who, if given a little knowledge of Mines and Mining, might be induced to turn that knowledge to practical account. The first part proper, deals with rocks, giv ing a general idea of how they are formed and altered, and how mineral deposits of value to commerce occur in them, with the names and characters of rocks commonly met with in mining sections. The third part sketches the means em ployed to determine, or identify, the different ores and minerals, with a list of all known elements and their symbols. Part four contains a description of each of the ores of the metals, of use as such in the arts, with a knowledge of how they are tested by simple means, and the methods employed in their treatment on a commercial scale. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Mining: Containing Interesting Descriptions of the Methods of Mining for Minerals in All Parts of the World The ancients, who looked backwards rather than forwards in search Of an ideal existence, spoke of the dawn of history as the Golden Age, the epithet being used metaphorically. All was then peace, plenty, and content. Strife between man and man, between nation and nation, had not yet arisen to mar human existence. Arguing from the social deterioration Of their Own time, they concluded that far back in the past men must have been Of a far nobler stamp, and their lot cast in much more pleasant surroundings. To-day we know too much to take refuge in such imaginations. While deploring the decay Of time honoured institutions and the virtues Of the good Old times, we look confidently forward and, were we given the choice, should not like to antedate our existence by even one hundred years. From the vantage-ground of knowledge we see that mankind has steadily advanced in spite of temporary set backs, fighting circumstances ever more successfully by means of the weapons which the Arts and Sciences enable him to forge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mining: An Elementary Treatise on the Getting of Minerals This treatise is prepared exclusively for the use of beginners and for those who wish to teach beginners, or as a handy refer ence-book for busy men whose excess of knowledge and experience causes them sometimes to forget their early lessons. Still, the author must appeal to the good-natured forbearance of the reader, on account of the many shortcomings and imperfections of this little work. He has found great difficulty in compressing into the space at his disposal even the briefest reference to many subjects which have to be noticed in an elementary treatise on Practical Mining. He has also found it hard, in the midst of his practical engagements, to find time for any literary work. Book Coal Mining

Download or read book Coal Mining written by Thomas H. Walton and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coal Mining: Described and Illustrated To extract coal from seams lying on low inclinations has been very successfully practised in the older mining countries. In some of the provinces of France, where the coal seams incline upwards of 70, and which are comparatively thick, much difficulty was formerly experienced in attempts made to mine out the coal entirely. Galleries driven into the coal seams horizontally, with pillars of certain widths left between them, resulted in much of the coal being lost, after it was detached from the pillars. It was then often buried by the rocks which caved in near the ends of these pillars. This occasioned a change to the present system of working by remblais, which seems to be a plan well adapted to the taking out of the coal of highly inclined coal seams. Ventilation of coal mines is treated in the following pages only in the most practical manner. To comprehend the fine points connected with mine ventilation on an extensive scale, an accurate knowledge of pneumatics with much practical experience is absolutely necessary. Absurdities connected with this important subject have floated into the works of very eminent writers, and it will not be an easy task to eradicate them. The chief difficulties in the way of practical ventilation of mines seem to consist in the maintenance of the air-passages of sufficient size free from obstructions, and in the resistance met with by air-currents moving with high velocities. Trusting that the succeeding pages will be found of use to the student of coal mining and to the operator of coal mines and the owners of coal lands, and that they may be of interest to the general reader as well, the author passes them over to the public with a consciousness of having thus done something towards performing his duty towards his fellow man. Book Principles of Metal Mining Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Metal Mining Classic Reprint written by J. H. Collins and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Metal Mining The art of mining must, to a large extent, be learnt at the mine, either underground or at the surface. The diligent student, however, will obtain much aid from external sources, and it is the object of this little work to convey some elementary knowledge of the principles and facts of mining in a form suitable for the instruction of young miners starting in life - to teach them what to observe - and how to interpret their observations. The young student should endeavour to add to his own limited experience the larger experiences of many men in many countries - by reading as well as by conversation with his travelled comrades. He should also accustom himself to make written notes of the peculiarities of all mineral deposits with which he may become acquainted, and of the cost and comparative efficiency of all tools, machinery, and materials which may come under his notice. Book Elements of Metallurgy

Download or read book Elements of Metallurgy written by John Arthur Phillips and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 878 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Metallurgy: A Practical Treatise on the Art of Extracting Metals From Their Ores A great difficulty experienced in collecting statistics relative to the metal-production of the world arises from the fact that ores raised in one country are frequently subjected to metallurgical treatment in another, and the produce is, in the majority of instances, returned by both. Allowance for such double returns has, when practicable, been made, but the complete elimination of error arising from this cause would be exceedingly difficult. Sometimes no precise figures have been available, and in such cases estimates founded on the best procurable data have been substituted. Both the wet and dry methods of assaying are given with considerable detail, and when, as in the case of ironstones, the value of an ore is materially affected by the nature and quantity of the impurities present, the processes employed for their detection and estimation are fully described. Book Electricity in Mining Classic Reprint

Download or read book Electricity in Mining Classic Reprint written by Sydney Ferris Walker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electricity in Mining In Chapter V. He has discussed the principles and practice of the distribution of electricity, as it is applicable to mining work, giving descriptions of every method of distribution, even some of those that in his Opinion will not often be applied, because it has come to his knowledge that they have been applied in a few cases. In Chapter VI. He has dealt very fully with the application of electricity to the different machinery about a mine. In writing this chapter, the Author has had before his mind the fact that there are a large and increasing number of engineers who are engaged in the application of electricity to mining work, and who necessarily are not familiar with the working of mines, when they first come to them. In the past there have been a very large number of failures, and a very large amount of money wasted, owing to the fact that those who have been engaged in applying electricity to some mining problem, have not been acquainted with mines, and have been far too sanguine as to the amount of power required for performing a given amount of work. Pathetic complaints have been made at the Mining Institute, by those who have been advising mining engineers in the application of electricity, that motors supposed to deliver a great many horse power would not perform the work, say in hauling trams, that was easily performed by one horse in the flesh. It has been the Author's endeavour, in writing Chapter VI., to provide information that will enable whoever may be engaged in mining work, to form a very safe idea of the power he must provide in each case, while on the other hand he has endeavoured to show mining engineers and mine managers how that power is to be delivered, and how they are to know when they have the proper amount.
