Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Mechanics: Including Kinematics, Kinetics and Statics; With Applications The main features of this book are the following: The subject is treated in an elementary manner. No mathematics have been introduced beyond the elementary principles of geometry, trigonometry, and the calculus. The calculus has been introduced because in many cases its methods are of marked advantage for clearness and compactness of demonstration. The book is so arranged, however, that the sections involving the calculus may be omitted without disturbing the continuity, and thus a more elementary course be taken. By introducing the calculus and giving alternative proofs the student does not form the idea, as is often the case, that there is a kind of mechanics called elementary, another analytical, a third theoretical, and so on. He sees better the oneness of the subject. Great care has been taken to indicate clearly the nature of the units in which the various mechanical quantities are expressed. Both the common (British) and the metric gravitation systems of units are explained and fully illustrated. The C. G. S. system employed in Astronomy and Physics, with the related practical units employed in Electrical Engineering, are also very fully treated. Synoptical tables for facilitating the passage from one system to another are appended (pp. 364, 365). Though the metric system has been legalized in the United States for over thirty years, there is little disposition among people in general to use it.
