Download or read book Elements of Geometry Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Andrew W. Phillips and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Geometry, Vol. 1 The present volume consists of the first five books of the authors' Elements of Geometry, or that portion which relates to Plane Geometry. While the book speaks for itself, We would call attention to some of its most important features. The Introduction presents in the Shortest possible com pass the general outlines of the science to be studied, and leads at once to the actual study itself. The definitions are distributed through the book as they are needed, instead of being grouped in long lists many pages in advance of the propositions to which they apply. An alphabetical index is added for easy reference. The constructions are also distributed, so that the student is taught how to make a figure at the same time that he is required to use it in demonstration. A point is that which has no parts, or that which has no magnitude. Euclid's point is therefore imaginary, shewing position only: we cannot make a point, however small, without size or magnitude; the smallest dot we can make with a pen or pencil must have length and breadth to be visible. Book The Elements of Euclid Vol 1

Download or read book The Elements of Euclid Vol 1 written by John Sturgeon MacKay and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Euclid, Vol. 1: Books I to Vi It should be stated that when a deduction is repeated once or oftener, in the same words, a different mode of proof is expected in each case. In the appendices, much curtailed from considerations of space, a few of the more useful and interesting theorems of elementary geometry have been given. It has not been thought expedient to introduce the signs + and -, to indicate opposite directions of measurement. The important advantages which result from this use of these signs are readily apprehended by readers who advance beyond the 'elements, ' and it is only of the 'elements' that the present manual treats. The historical notes, which are not specially intended for beginners, may save time and trouble to any one who wishes to investigate more fully certain of the questions which occur throughout the work. It would perhaps be well if such notes were more frequently to be found in mathematical text-books: the names of those who have extended the boundaries, or successfully cultivated any part of the domain, of science should not be unknown to those who inherit the results of their labour. Though the utmost pains have been taken by all concerned in the production of this volume to make it accurate and workmanlike, a few errors may have escaped notice. Corrections of thee will be gratefully received. The editor desires to express his thanks to Mr J. R. Pairman for the excellence of the diagrams, and to Mr David Traill, M.A., B.Sc., and Mr A. Y. Fraser, M.A., for valuable hints while the work was going through the press. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Plane Geometry, Vol. 1 In, teaching Geometry, it appeared, at first, singular that students could master, the difficulties of Arithmetic and Algebra, and yet fail to comprehendthe relations Of, magnitudes which appealed to the sense of sight. A little closer Observation, however, revealed the fact that many. Students accomplished little more than the committing to memory variations of A, B, C, and Of correct geometrical reasoning they had hardly a conception. Even the intelligent pupils were found unable to apply the principles to new matter; and the solution of, problems not in the book was almosten impossibility. Geometry, if prop erly taught and' thoroughly understood, is just as flex; ible as Arithmetic or Algebra. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Six Books of the Elements of Euclid, Vol. 1: With a Commentary and Geometrical Exercises Two thousand years have now rolled away since Euclid's Elements were first used in the school of Alexandria, and to this day they continue to be esteemed the best introduction to mathematical science. They have been adopted as the basis of geometrical instruction in every part of the globe to which the light of science has penetrated; and, while in every other department of human knowledge there have been almost as many manuals as schools, in this, and in this only, one work has, by common consent, been adopted as an universal standard. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Geometry Elements Moreover the attempt, in these books, to take away by definition from the familiar word distance its abstract character and connection with length-units, only confuses the ordinary student. A reference to the article Measurement in the Encyclopaedia Britannica will show that around the word distance centers the most abstruse advance in pure science and philosophy. An elementary geometry has no need of the words direction and distance. The present work, composed with special reference to use in teaching, yet strives to present the Elements of Geometry in a way so absolutely logical and compact, that they may be ready as rock-foundation for more advanced study.
