Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Field Hygiene and Sanitation One of the important subjects with which newly commissioned officers must acquaint themselves is the care of troops. Disease has killed more soldiers than powder and shot, and has occasioned the defeat of many armies. But when so much other military knowledge must be acquired, a description of how troops are kept healthy should be brief. This booklet, therefore, considers only those points that are of proven value. Many illustrations are employed in order to give clear ideas of the sanitary apparatus used in different armies and to abbreviate the text. The diagrams after Havard, Lelean, Tournade, Lewis and Miller, Peck and Trinca, are reproduced by courtesy of Wm. Wood and Company, Messrs J.A. Churchill, M. Fournier, the Military Surgeon and the British Medical Journal respectively. The first mentioned have also kindly permitted the usage of Havards text descriptive of the figure reproduced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sanitation in War The definition suggests the advisability of seeking refuge in safe seclusion, and - ou being haled into the embarrassing prominence of the platform - I hasten to forestall detection by forth with confessing to a colossal ignorance of the science of hygiene. As regards the art of sanita tion, however, the medical officer is - necessarily less ignorant, and it is upon this factor in the important duty of maintaining the health of the army in the field that I would therefore concentrate attention. Sanitation, as I think you will agree, is not the subject that one would select with the object of being interesting, and the unpromising nature of the subject is enhanced by the difficulty caused by the fact that so many degrees of knowledge are represented in the audience. It is no easy matter to avoid, on the one hand, boring the Officer who has had considerable experience of camp life or. They are the outcome of Major Macdonald's three years' service on the Western Front from Ypres to the Somme. They retain the flavour Of the Field, and are reproduced in all the simplicity of the crude, but efficient, surroundings in which the School was held. In the absence Of books no literary references were possible, even if these had been desirable. With the illustrations, which were drawn by Corporal Sefton Of the Sanitary Service, these Lectures give a faithful account of the measures which are in daily use - and with so great success - for the prevention of disease in the Army. It is the intention that all medical Officers shall be supplied with this book for their information and guidance in the discharge Of their important duties. It may also be read with profit by Officers in other Arms of the Service. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Military Hygiene and Sanitation Classic Reprint written by Charles H. Melville and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Military Hygiene and Sanitation This short treatise on Military Hygiene and Sanitation is founded on the lectures delivered by me while Professor of Hygiene at the Royal Army Medical College. I have not attempted to deal in detail with all the problems of hygiene, and in particular I have omitted - as, for instance, in the question of house drainage - those which are liberally treated in the ordinary textbooks. In considering the prevention of infectious diseases, also, I have limited myself to those which are most important in war. I have not therefore discussed such ailments as Malta fever and Tuberculosis, for instance, with, which the army is concerned mainly in peace-time, under conditions not differing materially from those which confront the Medical Officer of Health in civil practice. I have to acknowledge much kind assistance from Captain N. Dunbar Walker, Royal Army Medical Corps, who has helped me greatly with suggestions and in the preparation of some of the plates. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Military Hygiene; Especially Arranged for Officers, and Men of the Line Since the first appearance of this book there has been a notable and gratifying increase in the interest that line officers and men have manifested in matters of hygiene and sanitation, and a corresponding increase in the effectiveness of disease - preventing measures. That this improvement has occurred is not necessarily evidence that the book has been instrumental in bringing it about, but expressions of opinion from various officers have led me to think it a possible factor, and have in that way encouraged me to revise and in parts rewrite it, while a supplementary chapter has been added, in the belief that interest in the subject entitles the reader to a knowledge of advances more recently made, and in the hope that such interest and the usefulness of the book may be increased.
