Book English Words from Latin and Greek Elements

Download or read book English Words from Latin and Greek Elements written by Donald M. Ayers and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1965, Donald Ayers' English Words from Latin and Greek Elements has helped thousands of students to a broader vocabulary by showing them how to recognize classical roots in modern English words. Its second edition, published in 1986, has confirmed that vocabulary is best taught by root, not rote. The importance of learning classical word roots is already acknowledged by vocabulary texts that devote chapters to them. Why a whole book based on this approach? Ayers' text exposes students to a wider range of roots, introduces new English words in context sentences, and reinforces vocabulary through exercises. It promotes more practice with roots so that students learn to use them as tools in their everyday encounters with new words. English Words is written from the standpoint of English; it neither attempts to teach students Latin or Greek nor expects a knowledge of classical languages on the part of instructors. Its success has been demonstrated at both the secondary and college levels, and it can be used effectively with students in remedial or accelerated programs. An Instructor's Manual (gratis with adoption) and a Workbook are also available.

Book Principles of English Etymology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of English Etymology Classic Reprint written by Walter W. Skeat and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of English Etymology The present volume is intended to serve as a help to the student of English etymology. In my Etymological Dictionary, the numerous examples of similar letter - changes are invariably separated from each other, by the necessity for adhering to the alphabetical order. It is therefore advisable to re-arrange the results so as to shew what words should be under consideration at the same time. It is only by a com parison of this character that the various phonetic laws can be properly observed and tested. I have found it advisable to follow the example of Mr. Sweet, in his History of English Sounds, and to consider what may be called the 'native element' of our language apart from the Romance or imported element. Hence I have purposely excluded all words of French origin from the present investigation. A few French words are quoted here and there by way of illustration, but no inferences are here drawn from the results which their history furnishes. If the present volume should meet with approval, I propose to issue another volume, to be entitled 'second Series, ' Which will deal particularly, and almost exclusively, with the words which have been imported into English from French, as well as from Latin, Greek, and other languages (except Teutonic and Celtic) af/er the N orman Conquest. Download or read book Elements of English Etymology written by James W. Connor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of English Etymology: For the Use of Public and High Schools Chapter I. In Chapters III. And IV. Words from different languages, but of the same ultimate origin, are grouped together so as at once to aid the memory, and to give prominence to the great fact that English and the languages from which it has borrowed most, were originally dialects of the same tongue. Special attention has been paid to the derivations of native English words and it may be well to state here that the term anglo-saxon has been purposely avoided, its use being found to obscure in the minds of pupils the substantial identity of our language amid all its changes. Book An Analytic Dictionary of the English Etymology

Download or read book An Analytic Dictionary of the English Etymology written by Anatoly Liberman and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work introduces renowned linguistics scholar Anatoly Liberman's comprehensive dictionary and bibliography of the etymology of English words. The English etymological dictionaries published in the past claim to have solved the mysteries of word origins even when those origins have been widely disputed. An Analytic Dictionary of English Etymology "by contrast, discusses all of the existing derivations of English words and proposes the best one. In the inaugural volume, Liberman addresses fifty-five words traditionally dismissed as being of unknown etymology. Some of the entries are among the most commonly used words in English, including man, boy, girl, bird, brain, understand, key, ever, " and yet." Others are slang: mooch, nudge, pimp, filch, gawk, " and skedaddle." Many, such as beacon, oat, hemlock, ivy," and toad," have existed for centuries, whereas some have appeared more recently, for example, slang, kitty-corner, " and Jeep." They are all united by their etymological obscurity. This unique resource book discusses the main problems in the methodology of etymological research and contains indexes of subjects, names, and all of the root words. Each entry is a full-fledged article, shedding light for the first time on the source of some of the most widely disputed word origins in the English language. "Anatoly Liberman is one of the leading scholars in the field of English etymology. Undoubtedly his work will be an indispensable tool for the ongoing revision of the etymological component of the entries in the Oxford English Dictionary."" --Bernhard Diensberg, OED" consultant, French etymologies Anatoly Liberman is professor of Germanic philology at the University of Minnesota. He has published many works, including 16 books, most recently Word Origins . . . and How We Know Them: Etymology for Everyone."
