Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements Agricultural Chemistry That the phenomena of vegetation are dependent on certain chemical changes occurring in the plant, by which the various elements of its food are elaborated and con verted into vegetable matter, was very early recognised by chemists; and long before the correct principles of that science were established, Van Helmont maintained that plants derived their nourishment from water, while Sir Kenelm Digby, Hook, Bradley, and others, attributed an equally exclusive influence to air, and enlarged on the practical importance of the conclusions to be deduced from their views. These Opinions, which were little better than hypotheses, and founded on very imperfect chemical data, are mentioned by Jethro Tull, the father of modern agri culture, only to deny their accuracy; and he contended that the plants absorb and digest the finer particles of the earth, and attributed the success of the particular system of. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Agricultural Chemistry and Geology In England, and on the continent of Europe, it has been long understood among the class who own the soil, and cultivate it by the sweat of the brow of other men, and not their personal labor, that success in husbandry must depend upon giving to the soil, in some form, what is annually taken away in cultivated crops. In America, in the older States, the same truth is at length reluctantly admitted. The census tables have shown that the wheat crop of New York, in some counties, has fallen in its average product so low as eight bushels to the acre, where formerly from thirty to forty were produced. Lands deemed inexhaustible have been cropped almost to barrenness. Large sections of territory in Virginia, formerly very productive, by a course of culture not guided by a correct knowledge of the science of Husbandry, have become utterly unproductive, and been abandoned by the original cultivators. A succession of tobacco crops raised by shoal plowing without artificial manuring, or a proper rotation with other products, exhausted the surface soil, and compelled the proprietors to seek fresh fields. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Agricultural Chemistry and Geology For the sake of clearness, I have, in the following pages, divided the subject into four parts, the study Of each preceding part preparing the way for a complete understanding of those which follow. Thus the first part is devoted to the organic elements and parts of plants, the nature and sources Of these elements, and an explanation of the mode in which they become con verted into the substance Of plants - the second to the inorganic elements of plants, comprehending the study of the soils from which these elements are derived with the general relations of geology to agriculture the third to the nature of manures, by which soils are made more productive, and the amount of vegetable produce increased - and the fourth, to the results of ve gelation - to the kind and value of the food produced under different circumstances - and its relation to the growth of cattle, and to the amount and quality of dairy produce. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Chemistry of Agriculture Natural Science is the study of natural objects, and embraces in its widest sense everything which has material existence. Those branches of it treating of animals and plants are known respectively as zoology and botany, or collectively as biology. Geology treats of the structure and history of the earth; while chemistry is the science which deals with the composition of substances and the changes they undergo. Elements and Compounds. All substances are either simple, that is, elementary, or compound. Of simple substances between eighty and ninety are known. They are called elements or elementary matter, and so far as can be ascertained, they cannot be Split up into simpler substances. When two or more elements combine, compounds are produced. The smallest particle of an element which can enter into, ' or be driven out of a compound, is known as an atom. While the atoms of the same element are of the same weight, the atoms of different elements vary In weight. The first letter, or two letters, of the names of an element are used in chemistry to indicate the element, and an atomof that element. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements Agricultural Chemistry The object of the present work is to offer to the farmer a concise outline of the general principles of Agricultural Chemistry. It has no pretensions to be considered a complete treatise on the subject. On the contrary, its aim is strictly elementary, and with this view I have endeavoured, as far as possible, to avoid unnecessary technicalities so as to make it intelligible to those who are unacquainted with the details of chemical science, although I have not hesitated to discuss such points as appeared essential to the proper understanding of any particular subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Agricultural Chemistry Chemistry has an intimate connection with the processes of life, both animal and vegetable. The processes involved in vital phen omena, those occurring in the soil and indeed, in most natural Opera tions, are attended by Slow chemical changes, Often so complex in character that they are difficult to unravel. The ordinary chemical student acquires in his training a familiarity with reactions, which, as a rule, proceed quickly to a definite and well-marked termination. This, indeed, is the case with the vast majority of chemical changes occurring in the industries, and, for the most part, such reactions are thoroughly understood and can be satisfactorily explained.
