Caminha-se para a superação de um modelo de desenvolvimento em que se privatizam os lucros de curto prazo e socializam-se os prejuízos de longo prazo. Esse tipo de desenvolvimento tem sido apontado como economicamente insustentável a longo prazo até para a minoria da população mundial que dele se beneficia. Neste contexto, torna-se relevante analisar como tem se dado este processo de desenvolvimento e a evolução de seus conceitos, bem como estratégias adotadas na atualidade que promovam a melhoria da qualidade de vida e a inclusão social. Neste trabalho realiza-se uma revisão bibliográfica acerca dos conceitos acima citados e que servirá de base para a análise da estratégia de Desenvolvimento Regional Sustentável do Banco do Brasil SA, objeto de estudo deste trabalho. De forma geral, o trabalho investiga como se dá a estratégia de Desenvolvimento Regional Sustentável (DRS) do BB. Analisa-se a trajetória e as estratégias de DRS desenvolvidas pelo BB, identificando seu papel e forma de atuação, a integração de suas ações e como se dá a gestão dos seus projetos, visando contribuir para o debate sobre desenvolvimento na busca de melhores condições de vida para a sociedade.
