Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Treatise on Military Science and the Art of War The following lectures have been prepared as a military science course in the University, to meet the requirements of the "theoretical instruction" prescribed in General Order No. 93, Adjutant's General's Office, series 1893, for institutions of learning receiving the detail of an Army Officer to act as professor of military science and tactics. The lectures have been prepared upon the assumption that students have drilled one year and have become proficient in infantry drill regulations to include battalion movements, and in artillery drill regulations to include the "School of the Cannoneers." These lectures will be bound in three "parts," Part I being intended as a text-book for sophomores, Part II for juniors and Part III for seniors. These books may also be found useful to National Guard Officers, and Noncommissioned Officers, as they constitute a progressive course, leading up from armory drill to battle tactics. Preface to Second Edition. In this edition the three "parts" are hound as one book of 12 chapters for use as a text-book for volunteer troops as well as national guardsmen and military colleges; - it having been suggested by officers who have used the separate "parts" of the first edition, that the twelve lectures, taken together, afford a complete elementary course for those who are hastily preparing for military service, and just what they need to go with "drill regulations." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Military Science and the Art of War These Notes were prepared in an abbreviated form for use in connection with a course of lectures on Military Science and the Art of War, delivered to the Senior Class at the State University of Iowa. The absence of a text-book made something of the kind necessary, and the success that has attended the distribution of hektograph copies of these Notes seems to indicate that they are in the right direction. No attempt has been made in these lectures, which are supplemental to four years of drill, to teach the purely technical part of the military profession. The limited time available for military instruction at colleges indicated to me that the instruction should be broad and general. The aim, therefore, has been to teach these young men how armies are organized and their affairs administered; how men are handled in actual warfare, and how battles are fought; and, in addition, something about the material employed in war - guns, ammunition, torpedoes and explosives: in short, to give them a speaking acquaintance with the Science and Art of War. The design was only to state concisely the first elements of the Art of War and show their relations to each other. An attempt has been made to arrange the matter in such order as to lead one first approaching the subject to so study campaigns and battles as to try to discover the causes which have secured victory to one and entailed defeat upon another; and to determine whether they arise from tactics logistics or strategy. If it accomplishes this object it will have completely fulfilled its mission. In the body of the work credit has been given to authors whose works have been somewhat closely followed in the particular subject under discussion. In addition to those so mentioned, most of the works whose names are given on the adjoining page have been freely consulted, and the ideas contained in them have been adopted, modified, combined with others, or rejected as seemed best. My thanks are due to Lieutenants Goethals, Hodges, and Hale, of the Corps of Engineers, by whom I have been ably assisted in the revision of this work.
