Book Elementary Theory of Equations Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Theory of Equations Classic Reprint written by Leonard Eugene Dickson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Theory of Equations The longer an engineer has been separated from his alma mater, the fewer mathematical formulas he uses and the more he relies upon tables and, when the latter fail, upon graphical methods. Although graphical methods have the advantage of being ocular, they frequently suffer from the fact that only what is seen is sensed. But this defect is due to the kind of graphics used. With the aid of the scientific art of graphing pre sented in Chapter I, one may not merely make better graphs in less time but actually draw correct negative conclusions from a graph so made, and therefore sense more than one sees. For instance, one may be sure that a given cubic equation has only the one real root seen in the graph, if the bend points lie on the same side of the x-axis. Emphasis is here placed upon Newton's method of solving numerical equations, both from the graphical and the numerical standpoint. One of several advantages (well recognized in Europe) of Newton's method over Homer's is that it applies as well to non-algebraic as to algebraic equations. In this elementary book, the author has of course omitted the difficult Galois theory of algebraic equations (certain texts on which are very erroneous) and has merely illustrated the subject of invariants by a few examples. It is surprising that the theorems of Descartes, Budan, and Sturm, on the real roots of an equation, are Often stated inaccurately. Nor are the texts in English on this subject more fortunate on the score of correct proofs; for these reasons, care has been taken in selecting the books to which the reader is referred in the present text. The material is here so arranged that, before an important general theorem is stated, the reader has had concrete illustrations and often also special cases. The exercises are so placed that a reasonably elegant and brief solution may be expected, without resort to tedious multiplications and similar manual labor. Very few Of the five hundred exercises are of the same nature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Equations and Inequalities

Download or read book Equations and Inequalities written by Jiri Herman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A look at solving problems in three areas of classical elementary mathematics: equations and systems of equations of various kinds, algebraic inequalities, and elementary number theory, in particular divisibility and diophantine equations. In each topic, brief theoretical discussions are followed by carefully worked out examples of increasing difficulty, and by exercises which range from routine to rather more challenging problems. While it emphasizes some methods that are not usually covered in beginning university courses, the book nevertheless teaches techniques and skills which are useful beyond the specific topics covered here. With approximately 330 examples and 760 exercises.

Book A Second Course in Elementary Differential Equations

Download or read book A Second Course in Elementary Differential Equations written by Paul Waltman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Second Course in Elementary Differential Equations deals with norms, metric spaces, completeness, inner products, and an asymptotic behavior in a natural setting for solving problems in differential equations. The book reviews linear algebra, constant coefficient case, repeated eigenvalues, and the employment of the Putzer algorithm for nondiagonalizable coefficient matrix. The text describes, in geometrical and in an intuitive approach, Liapunov stability, qualitative behavior, the phase plane concepts, polar coordinate techniques, limit cycles, the Poincaré-Bendixson theorem. The book explores, in an analytical procedure, the existence and uniqueness theorems, metric spaces, operators, contraction mapping theorem, and initial value problems. The contraction mapping theorem concerns operators that map a given metric space into itself, in which, where an element of the metric space M, an operator merely associates with it a unique element of M. The text also tackles inner products, orthogonality, bifurcation, as well as linear boundary value problems, (particularly the Sturm-Liouville problem). The book is intended for mathematics or physics students engaged in ordinary differential equations, and for biologists, engineers, economists, or chemists who need to master the prerequisites for a graduate course in mathematics.

This book was released on 2018-06-16 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Course in the Theory of Equations by Leonard E. Dickson This is a new printing of the classic book by Dickson. It was to meet the numerous needs of the student in regard to his earlier and future mathematical courses that the present book was planned with great care and after wide consultation. It differs essentially from the author's "Elementary Theory of Equations," both in regard to omissions and additions, and since it is addressed to younger students and may be used parallel with a course in differential calculus. Simpler and more detailed proofs are now employed. The exercises are simpler, more numerous, of greater variety, and involve more practical applications. There are more than 480 exercises for students to practice. Topics covered include complex numbers, roots of equations, the quadratic equation, graphical methods, cubic and quartic equations, numerical methods, systems of linear equations, etc. Answers to all the exercises are provided at the end of the book. This is a new, high quality, and affordable edition. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This superb text introduces number theory to readers with limited formal mathematical training. Intended for use in freshman- and sophomore-level courses in arts and science curricula, in teacher-training programs, and in enrichment programs for high-school students, it is filled with simple problems to stimulate readers' interest, challenge their abilities and increase mathematical strength. Contents: I. Introduction II. The Euclidean Algorithm and Its Consequences III. Congruences IV. The Powers of an Integer Modulo m V. Continued Fractions VI. The Gaussian Integers VII. Diophantine Equations Requiring only a sound background in high-school mathematics, this work offers the student an excellent introduction to a branch of mathematics that has been a strong influence in the development of higher pure mathematics, both in stimulating the creation of powerful general methods in the course of solving special problems (such as Fermat conjecture and the prime number theorem) and as a source of ideas and inspiration comparable to geometry and the mathematics of physical phenomena.
