Download or read book Elementary Politics Classic Reprint written by Thomas Raleigh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-10 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Politics Even if these social impulses were weaker than they are, man would be compelled by necessity to live a social life. N o creature is more helpless, or less able to make a living, than a solitary man. Seeing that society exists by nature and necessity, we are prepared to find that it has existed since men made their first appearance on this planet. Such is, in fact, the testimony of history. Here and there an individual or a family has subsisted apart from the rest of the human race. But the general rule is that men live, and always have lived, in social groups. Book Elementary Political Economy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Political Economy Classic Reprint written by Edwin Cannan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Political Economy As the purpose of this work was mistaken by many critics when the first edition appeared in 1888, it may be well to take this opportunity of explaining that the word elementary' in the title must be understood in its proper sense, as indicating that the book contains the essential parts of political economy, not that it is intended for young children, nor even for ill-prepared candidates for examination who desire something to commit to memory. In writing it I had no such persons in view, but was thinking of the intelligent man of the world who desires to be told in small compass and ordinary language what the practically important part of the teaching of political economy is. I therefore tried to explain as directly as possible the general laws on which the material welfare of nations and individuals depends, and did not scruple to abandon both the traditional arrangement of subjects and the special terminology of the economists. Alterations, some of which were rendered necessary by the changes made by the British budget of i 894, have been made on pp. 142-145.Otherwise the present edition is an exact reprint of the first. Book Preparing for Citizenship

Download or read book Preparing for Citizenship written by William Backus Guitteau and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preparing for Citizenship: An Elementary d104book in Civics At the close of each chapter in the text, the teacher will find questions and topics for further study and investigation. The more simple investigations only should be undertaken in classes composed of the younger pupils. Care should be exercised, also, in selecting only questions of especial interest to the particular community; for example, rural schools will naturally omit many questions pertaining to urban conditions, and vice versa. As a rule, it will be best to assign one question to each pupil, or to a group of pupils, to be reported on at a future date. The teacher should suggest sources of information for pupils to make use of in their investigations. Often the parents, or older brothers and sisters, can give the necessary help; or, again, it may be advisable to consult local officials for information concerning their work. Members of the class should be encouraged to visit township, county, and municipal offices; and local officials should he invited to come before the class and describe the business of their departments. Added interest may be secured by organizing the class into a town meeting, or as a city council, State legislature, or branch of Congress. A bulletin board in the classroom for newspaper clippings pertaining to governmental affairs will prove interesting and helpful. Book Elementary Civics

Download or read book Elementary Civics written by Charles McCarthy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Civics: The New Civics WE have not attempted to carry out any stereotyped idea of a text book in Civics. Our aim has been to give the child of the upper grammar grades such an understand ing of his relation to other people as will make him a good citizen. That understanding can come only with a knowl edge of the difficulties the human race has had in learning to live and work together. An appreciation of the advan tages to him of the present stage of cooperation can be gained only with a knowledge of the slow and patient steps which have brought us to that stage. A zeal for carrying the human race still further forward in its ability to live and work together can be inspired in the hearts of all our children only when the advantages of the present and the future are made to stand out against the disadvantages of the past. It is faith that we all need; and by faith we mean the belief that we can bring to pass the good we desire for the human race. We have told the story, therefore, of a few of the struggles which our ancestors have had in order to obtain and transmit to us some of the things which we now con sider essential to our comfort and happiness. The child can grasp the idea of a mountain as early as he can grasp the phenomenon of erosion on that mountain. In the same way, he can grasp the great movements of society as easily as he can grasp the petty details of township or county organization. Big things, if taught as simply, are as easy to grasp as little things. If the child is ever to have the proper perspective he must see the great background against which the little details stand out. Book Federal and State Government

Download or read book Federal and State Government written by Donald Littlefield Morrill and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Federal and State Government: An Elementary Treatise on the Civil Government of the United States and the State of Illinois In the opinion of competent critics, writers of these books have gone to extremes in their efforts to observe the pedagogic precept of commencing instruction upon any subject with those features which are nearest to the pupil. Under this theory, in many text-books the study of civics is commenced with chapters upon domestic and social topics, which have no place in a work devoted to the study of civil government. This book is designed for use by students who are sufficiently advanced to take up the study of United States history. It should be used in the higher grades of the elementary schools, or the first year of the high school, or both, according to the course of study pursued. It is divided into two parts: the first is devoted to a study of the Federal government and political system; the second to the State government and local institutions of Illinois. In the first part of the book, it has been the authors aim to furnish aid to students commencing the study of our national political institutions. Therefore, definite and specific information is given as to the essential features of the Federal system, derived from sources not readily accessible to either teacher or pupil. No attempt has been made to analyze the provisions of the Federal Constitution, or to present controversies as to its construction, but there has been an endeavor to show the actual working of our national government, and to describe the same in a manner which can be comprehended by beginners. The second part of the book is intended as a practical guide to the student upon important matters which are regulated by the local and State government. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Appeal for Rectitude in Primary Politics To the Editor of The Republican: Our district has acquired the bad dis tinction of the bolting district. Five elections of the six held Since it was formed, have been grossly dishonorable in their events, both to leading individ nais and to portions of the people; only one has been without a bolt and a turmoil. Two of the bolts were provoked by rank injustice. Three of them were unprovoked, selfish and shameful; and were marked by alliances with our political enemies. Such a bolt, is the one we have just experienced; and Jarvis Rockwell, Esq., has triumphed by it. He is a lawyer in Hinsdale. Book Elementary Politics

Download or read book Elementary Politics written by Thomas Raleigh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Politics It has been truly said that if men would only define the terms which they use in argument, most controversies would end before they begin. In the following pages I have attempted to define the terms which are commonly used in political argument. These terms are derived from history, from morals, from economic science, and from law. Some elementary knowledge of these science is necessary to the practical politician, just as an elementary knowledge of physical science is necessary to the mariner. This book is not meant to be a compendium of information - nor is it meant to be a summary of orthodox political doctrine. My object is not to satisfy but to stimulate inquiry; not to form my reader's opinions, but to induce him to form opinions of his own. In preparing this edition, I have corrected and supplemented some passages which were not sufficiently clear; and at the close of each chapter I have added references to those political and historical works which are most likely to be accessible and useful to the English reader. Book Government and Politics in Virginia

Download or read book Government and Politics in Virginia written by Howard Lee McBain and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Government and Politics in Virginia Regrettable as the fact is, a large majority of children in the United States go out into active life before they reach the high school. Since this is true, and since ours is a government which the people themselves must operate, it seems manifestly desirable that some time should be given in the elementary schools to a consideration of the activities of the government. This book has been written for the pupils of the elementary schools. Government in the United States is exceedingly complicated in organization. It is not to be expected that children will find interest in, or be able to understand, all of its intricate details. The fundamental principles of its organization are not, however, beyond their understanding; and, if properly presented to them, there is no reason why the functional activities of the government should not enlist their keen interest. It is perhaps not of vital importance that the child in school should be able to memorize the titles, the powers, and the duties of the innumerable officers who carry on the work of the government. Book Primary Elections

Download or read book Primary Elections written by C. Edward Merriam and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primary Elections: A Study of the History and Tendencies, of Primary Election Legislation The Fathers of the Republic grappled with the problem of establishing a form of government in which the holders of political power should be responsible to the political people, rather than to a king; and in this their labors were crowned with success. In the course of a few generations, how ever, the political party, unforeseen by the Fathers, grew up and, although an extra-legal body, over shadowed the regularly constituted agencies of government. One of the great problems of the last generation and of our own day is the establishment of a form of party government in which the holders of party power shall be responsible to the voters of the party, rather than to an autocrat or an oligarchy. To secure amenability of party authorities to the party will to establish a constitutional and demo cratic government within the party - this is a task at which the American people now labor. There is no more important chapter in the history of democracy than that which deals with the progress and the prospects of this great movement.
