Book Elementary Plane Geometry Inductive and Deductive

Download or read book Elementary Plane Geometry Inductive and Deductive written by Alfred Baker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Plane Geometry Inductive and Deductive The geometry of Euclid is deductive. Yet the processes of all sciences, other than pure mathematics, involve both induction and deduction. All the knowledge which we have of life, with its varied phenomena, is reached by induction and deduction. Any science, then, which permits the student, from a number of observations, to reach a general result, and again from such generalization to draw conclusions, must have distinct educational value. The present little book is an attempt to make the processes of elementary geometry both inductive and deductive. I feel that in making this attempt I am adapting the study of Geometry to immature minds. The mind of youth receives its knowledge in the form of isolated facts; it is for the educator to point out that isolated facts fall into groups and may be crystallized into general conclusions. Special opportunities present themselves in elementary geometry for following this method. Thus, if a number of triangles be accurately constructed with bases of 45 millimetres and angles at the bases 75° and 62°, by actual measurement the learner finds that all the sides opposite to the angles of 75° are equal, and likewise those opposite to the angles of 62°, and that the remaining angles of the triangles have the same magnitude. Analogous constructions and measurements being repeated in a number of cases, the learner, as a matter of inductive observation, feels himself justified in making the generalization expressed in the enunciation of Euclid I., 26. In the process the intellectual interest and curiosity of the pupil are excited, and in reaching the conclusion he feels almost as if he had made the discovery himself. If, subsequently, geometrical forms are presented to him where he can utilize his previous conclusion, he feels with keenness the value of his previous work. He has, in fact, been going through the process of induction and deduction, - the process through which every scientific discoverer goes - with, in miniature, the emotions of the investigator. Book Geometry for Schools Theoretical

Download or read book Geometry for Schools Theoretical written by Alfred Baker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geometry for Schools, Theoretical: A Sequel to Elementary Plane Geometry, Inductive and Deductive The question of improvement in the teaching of elementary Geometry has been so long under consideration and discussion, that agreement in the main has been reached as to the lines along which reform should proceed. Thus the Report of the Committee of the British Association, the Report of the Committee of the Mathematical Association (formerly the Association for the Improvement of Geometrical Teaching), the Report of the Syndicate of the Senate of the University of Cambridge, as well as the various publications on Elementary Geometry that have recently appeared, differ in details rather than in principles. There is a general consensus of opinion on the following points: (1). The study of formal demonstrative Geometry should be preceded by a practical course in inductive or experimental Geometry, There is general accord that this practical course should be continued during the period of elementary geometric studies. Thus the Senate of the University of Cambridge has decided that, "The paper in Geometry shall contain questions on Practical and on Theoretical Geometry. Every candidate shall be expected to answer questions in both branches of the subject." (2). The subject should not be dissociated from other branches of mathematics - Arithmetic and Algebra - studied at the same time. Book Geometry for Schools Theoretical

Download or read book Geometry for Schools Theoretical written by Alfred Baker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geometry for Schools, Theoretical: A Sequel to Elementary Plane Geometry, Inductive and Deductive A considerable number of the propositions in Euclid are of little or no importance in the scientific development of the subject, and should be discarded. A large part of Euclid, Book _ii., loses significance by reason of the permis sive use of algebraic forms. Much of Euclid, Book IV., is best dealt with as exercises in practical constructive Geometry. The change in the theory of Preportion makes certain propositions in Euclid, Book VI., very simple, or even unnecessary. The time thus set free may well he devoted to some more advanced Branch of Geometry, e.g., the elements of Analytical Geometry. In my Elementary Plane Geometry - Inductive and Deductive I have sought to show how a practical course in measurement, use of simple instruments, and accurate con struction may afford a training of value in itself, and also of service in anticipating the truths afterwards reached by deductive Geometry. In the present book I trust the second and third of the reforms, which teachers of mathematics have had in mind for years, and which are recommended in the Reports above referred to, may he found to have been Judiciouslv carried out. Book Plane Geometry With Problems and Applications

Download or read book Plane Geometry With Problems and Applications written by H. E. Slaught and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plane Geometry With Problems and Applications In writing this book the authors have been guided by two main purposes: (a) That pupils may gain by gradual and natural processes the power and the habit of deductive reasoning. (b) That pupils may learn to know the essential facts of -elementary geometry as properties of the space in which they live, and not merely as statements in a book. The important features by which the Plane Geometry seeks to accomplish these purposes are: 1. The simplification of the first five chapters by the exclusion of many theorems found in current books. These five chapters correspond to the usual five books, and the most important omissions are the formal treatment of the theory of limits, the incommensurable cases, maxima and minima, and numerous other theorems, together with the deduction of complicated algebraic formulæ, such as the area of a triangle and the radii of the inscribed, escribed, and circumscribed circles, in terms of the three sides. Chapter VI contains a graphic representation of certain important theorems and an informal presentation of incommensurable cases and limits. The treatment of limits is based upon the graph, since the visual or graphic method appeals more directly to the intuition than the usual abstract processes. Chapter VII is devoted to advanced work and to a review of the preceding chapters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Intellectual Development and Mathematics Learning

Download or read book Intellectual Development and Mathematics Learning written by Chongde Lin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-30 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the outcomes of author’s 40 years of research, especially the theory of “the Triangular Pyramid Structure of Thinking” that he independently proposed, and the application of his development theory in the field of mathematics education. The book firstly explains the substantial character of intelligence, the development law of intelligence, and the relationship between intelligence development and creativity cultivation. Secondly, it discusses the structure of mathematical thinking of children and adolescents from 0 to 18 years old, and the methods of developing students’ thinking ability and the quality of intelligence through arithmetic learning. In the end, this book also demonstrates the characteristics of the development of mathematical thinking ability of children at age 0-6, elementary school students, and secondary school students, and the related latest research in this field. Based on the theory of “the Triangular Pyramid Structure of Thinking”, a number of examples are given to illustrate how the theory of intelligence development can be used in mathematics teaching to promote the development of students’ thinking abilities and to improve the quality of teaching. This book covers various areas including psychology, mathematics, and education. It has a great reference value for scholars in the field of psychology to study the theory of intelligence and the structure of thinking, providing guidance for parents and mathematics teachers to promote children’s quality of intelligence and mathematical thinking abilities, and to enhance their mathematics learning effects. In addition, it provides examples for psychological research to serve specific subject teaching in elementary and secondary schools.
