Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fundamentals of Naval Tactics This work is a systematic codification in treatise form of the mathematical principles of Naval Tactics. The author is the instructor in the Art of Naval War at the Royal Italian Naval Academy, and his name is well known as the writer of a number of excellent articles of much original thought on naval tactics in the Revista Marittima. He is therefore well fitted for the task of reducing to the consecutive order and logical sequence, so necessary to the student, tactical principles and theorems. Tactics is an ever changing art; for while its scientific principles do not change, its rules necessarily change with changing conditions. No books on tactics will ever solve the problem finally, because the problem is forever changing; but if its methods are correct, these will ever be of value. Even if we do not agree with all the views of the author and of the other of his distinguished compatriots whose views he has here embodied, the work would be of value as expressing the Italian point of view; and Italy stands in the first rank of naval thought. As the title indicates, the book deals chiefly with the fundamentals, and approaches the subject more particularly from the mathematical side. Excerpt: ... quarter will it be most effective. Also what rate of speed can be attained without interfering with the precision of fire with this weapon. When we have discussed in order every factor of the offence, then a consideration of the defensive qualities is in order. On what bearing does her armor, or protection of coal, or bulkhead arrangement best cover her vitals, this important steam-pipe or outboard connection, or that ammunition-supply? And so on through every question entering into the fighting of the ship. Out of this all, by drawing comparisons between advantages, and disadvantages comes a settlement upon three things: 1st. Some presentation of the ship, which shall be the strongest to offer to the enemy for offence and defence. 2d. Some rate of speed, which shall serve your weapons best. 3d. Some one range for your guns at which the greatest damage will be inflicted. Doing all this is making a tactical survey of your ship; and upon this bearing, with this speed, and at this distance you must endeavor to keep and fight your enemy. Further on we will see that what is true of one ship is true of ships in combination; and that, in solving the problem concerning the position to be occupied by ships in the line of battle, the question of rank of the several commanding officers hardly even enters. CHAPTER II. WAR-VESSELS. I. To be able to meet the enemy, we must oppose him with a fleet equal, at least, to his own in numbers, construction, speed, and offensive power. To protect our coast, we must be supplied with proper vessels which can keep the sea, yet be of sufficiently light draught to enter most of our harbors. They must be either very swift, or else adequately defended against the fire of the enemy's ships which they are likely to...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Naval Warfare: Law and License If any one having an elementary acquaintance with the law of nations had been asked, twelve years ago, what were the rights of belligerents and neutrals in naval warfare, he would not have been at a loss for a reply. Subject to one or two minor points of unsettled detail, he would have been quite clear and certain as to the position. A continuous series of cases and textbooks made it plain. If some went further than others in claiming extended neutral immunities, that was a point of academic argument which was perhaps of interest, but of no particular importance, except as showing that the trend of thought was on the whole unfavorable to the belligerent. With wooden walls, broadside guns, and sails, it was the great fleet of many vessels. Today, with the armor-clad and its all-round fire, torpedoes, and ram, it is the single ship. Formerly the ship was a component of the fleet. To-day the fleet is a combination of ships. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Genius of Naval Warfare Vol 1 written by René Daveluy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genius of Naval Warfare, Vol. 1: Strategy It did not take long for me to perceive that I had undertaken a task beyond my strength, and that a very long time would elapse before I should be capable of realizing my program moreover, the title I had chosen seemed to me to be pretentious, although it exactly expressed my idea. I therefore renounced the composi tion of a complete work and limited my pretensions to bringing out separate studies, without connecting them by a general title. Under these conditions A Study of Naval Combat was published in 1902, followed by A Study of Naval Strategy in 1905. These two works were the first two parts of my original design. As for the third part, it was sacrificed to the publication of The Struggle for Command of the Sea; and since then I have not had time to bring it out. A new edition of the two studies that have already appeared having become necessary, I decided to take up again my first project, inclusive of its general title, which I hope will be more readily pardoned for the ten years that have passed. I therefore Offer to-day to the criticism of my comrades Volume I of The Genius of Naval Warfare: Strategy, which is merely a revision of A Study of Naval Strategy. It is very rare for authors not to have something to add to their works, and I have not escaped the common law. I have therefore seized the opportunity to reconstruct or develop some chapters. In others I have merely made trifling corrections; but my readers will thank me for having abbreviated. Volume II, Tactics, is about to appear and will be the new edition of A Study of Naval Combat. Finally, I hope very soon to complete Organization, which will form Volume III of The Genius of Naval Warfare.
