Book Elementary Analysis through Examples and Exercises

Download or read book Elementary Analysis through Examples and Exercises written by John Schmeelk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-12-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is hard to imagine that another elementary analysis book would contain ma terial that in some vision could qualify as being new and needed for a discipline already abundantly endowed with literature. However, to understand analysis, be ginning with the undergraduate calculus student through the sophisticated math ematically maturing graduate student, the need for examples and exercises seems to be a constant ingredient to foster deeper mathematical understanding. To a talented mathematical student, many elementary concepts seem clear on their first encounter. However, it is the belief of the authors, this understanding can be deepened with a guided set of exercises leading from the so called "elementary" to the somewhat more "advanced" form. Insight is instilled into the material which can be drawn upon and implemented in later development. The first year graduate student attempting to enter into a research environment begins to search for some original unsolved area within the mathematical literature. It is hard for the student to imagine that in many circumstances the advanced mathematical formulations of sophisticated problems require attacks that draw upon, what might be termed elementary techniques. However, if a student has been guided through a serious repertoire of examples and exercises, he/she should certainly see connections whenever they are encountered.

Book Basic Elements of Real Analysis

Download or read book Basic Elements of Real Analysis written by Murray H. Protter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-29 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the highly-acclaimed "A First Course in Real Analysis" comes a volume designed specifically for a short one-semester course in real analysis. Many students of mathematics and the physical and computer sciences need a text that presents the most important material in a brief and elementary fashion. The author meets this need with such elementary topics as the real number system, the theory at the basis of elementary calculus, the topology of metric spaces and infinite series. There are proofs of the basic theorems on limits at a pace that is deliberate and detailed, backed by illustrative examples throughout and no less than 45 figures.

Download or read book Mathematical Analysis written by Bernd S. W. Schröder and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-01-28 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A self-contained introduction to the fundamentals of mathematical analysis Mathematical Analysis: A Concise Introduction presents the foundations of analysis and illustrates its role in mathematics. By focusing on the essentials, reinforcing learning through exercises, and featuring a unique "learn by doing" approach, the book develops the reader's proof writing skills and establishes fundamental comprehension of analysis that is essential for further exploration of pure and applied mathematics. This book is directly applicable to areas such as differential equations, probability theory, numerical analysis, differential geometry, and functional analysis. Mathematical Analysis is composed of three parts: ?Part One presents the analysis of functions of one variable, including sequences, continuity, differentiation, Riemann integration, series, and the Lebesgue integral. A detailed explanation of proof writing is provided with specific attention devoted to standard proof techniques. To facilitate an efficient transition to more abstract settings, the results for single variable functions are proved using methods that translate to metric spaces. ?Part Two explores the more abstract counterparts of the concepts outlined earlier in the text. The reader is introduced to the fundamental spaces of analysis, including Lp spaces, and the book successfully details how appropriate definitions of integration, continuity, and differentiation lead to a powerful and widely applicable foundation for further study of applied mathematics. The interrelation between measure theory, topology, and differentiation is then examined in the proof of the Multidimensional Substitution Formula. Further areas of coverage in this section include manifolds, Stokes' Theorem, Hilbert spaces, the convergence of Fourier series, and Riesz' Representation Theorem. ?Part Three provides an overview of the motivations for analysis as well as its applications in various subjects. A special focus on ordinary and partial differential equations presents some theoretical and practical challenges that exist in these areas. Topical coverage includes Navier-Stokes equations and the finite element method. Mathematical Analysis: A Concise Introduction includes an extensive index and over 900 exercises ranging in level of difficulty, from conceptual questions and adaptations of proofs to proofs with and without hints. These opportunities for reinforcement, along with the overall concise and well-organized treatment of analysis, make this book essential for readers in upper-undergraduate or beginning graduate mathematics courses who would like to build a solid foundation in analysis for further work in all analysis-based branches of mathematics.

Book Elementary Mathematical Analysis

Download or read book Elementary Mathematical Analysis written by Charles Sumner Slichter and published by . This book was released on 1918 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not intended to be a text on "Practical Mathematics" in the sense of making use of scientific material and of fundamental notion» not already in the possession of the student, or in the sense of making the principles of mathematics secondary to its technique. On the contrary, it has been the aim to give the fundamental truths of elementary analysis as much prominence as seems possible in a working course for freshmen. The emphasis of the book is intended to be upon the notion of functionality. Illustrations from science are freely used to make this concept prominent. The student should learn early in his course that an important purpose of mathematics is to express and to interpret the laws of actual phenomena and not primarily to secure here and there certain computed results. Mathematics might well be defined as the science that takes the broadest view of all of the sciences-an epitome of quantitative knowledge. The introduction of the student to a broad view of mathematics can hardly begin too early.
