Book Elementary Italian Revised First Edition Color

Download or read book Elementary Italian Revised First Edition Color written by Jessica Greenfield and published by Cognella Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013-05-16 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Elementary Italian" teaches Italian vocabulary, grammar, and culture in units centering on practical, engaging themes. The progression of the material is tried and tested, and begins with an introductory lesson on the alphabet and pronunciation, greetings and salutations, numbers, days of the week, and months of the year. Topics such as the family, the city, leisure activities, health, and the home present useful, everyday vocabulary and language in familiar contexts, making it easy for students to relate to the target language and practice applying it. As students advance through the text they learn several verb tenses: the simple present, the imperative, the present perfect, gerunds, and the present progressive. Other grammatical structures include pronouns, comparatives and superlatives, and prepositions. In addition to the language, the text also teaches students about aspects of Italian culture including Italian cuisine, the school system, fashion, and politics and government. Each section on culture includes authentic materials, providing students with exposure to the Italian language as it is used by native speakers. Student friendly and extensively class-tested, "Elementary Italian" was written for college-level beginning Italian courses, and is designed for classes that meet three days a week over a fifteen week semester, but can easily be adapted to a quarter system. Jessica Greenfield earned bachelor's degrees in Italian studies and Classical Civilizations at the University of California, Berkeley, her master's degree in Italian Studies at the University of Notre Dame, and her Ph.D. in Romance Languages, with a specialization in Italian, at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Dr. Greenfield is a faculty member in the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the University of North Texas, where she also serves as the Italian Language Program Coordinator. The author of numerous articles, reviews, and textbook contributions, she has also presented at regional and national conferences. Her research interests include modern Italian literature, Sicilian writers, and the Italian realist writer Giovanni Verga.

Book Elementary Italian Grammar

Download or read book Elementary Italian Grammar written by Pietro Motti and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Italian Grammar In writing this little grammar of my native language, it has been my chief object to exhibit in as clear and easy a form as possible the main features of the accidence and syntax combined in their applications to those words and phrases which are most frequently employed in polite conversation. The Italian language, as now spoken und written by the educated classes, is very simple and precise. Long periods and intricate inversions are no longer in use. We admire them in the works of our standard authors of by-gone ages, but we take great care not to imitate them. Thus, without losing anything of its former grace and harmony, the Italian language has become in this century a very easy language too. This book being intended for beginners and travellers, I have added to it, in the form of an Appendix, a selection of useful words and phrases, which, it is confidently hoped, will greatly assist pupils wishing to speak the language as soon as possible. This new edition has been carefully revised and corrected in all its parts, and longer and more interesting reading exercises concerning Italian history and literature have been appended to the book, in order to render it as useful as possible. Book Understanding Italian Opera

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tim Carter
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2015-09-16
  • ISBN : 0190247967
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book Understanding Italian Opera written by Tim Carter and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opera is often regarded as the pinnacle of high art. A "Western" genre with global reach, it is where music and drama come together in unique ways, supported by stellar singers and spectacular scenic effects. Yet it is also patently absurd -- why should anyone break into song on the dramatic stage? -- and shrouded in mystique. In this engaging and entertaining guide, renowned music scholar Tim Carter unravels its many layers to offer a thorough introduction to Italian opera from the seventeenth to the early twentieth centuries. Eschewing the technical musical detail that all too often dominates writing on opera, Carter begins instead where the composers themselves did: with the text. Walking readers through the relationship between music and poetry that lies at the heart of any opera, Carter then offers explorations of five of the most enduring and emblematic Italian operas: Monteverdi's The Coronation of Poppea; Handel's Julius Caesar in Egypt; Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro; Verdi's Rigoletto; and Puccini's La Bohème. Shedding light on the creative collusions and collisions involved in bringing opera to the stage, the various, and varying, demands of the text and music, and the nature of its musical drama, Carter also shows how Italian opera has developed over the course of music history. Complete with synopses, cast lists, and suggested further reading for each work discussed, Understanding Italian Opera is a must-read for anyone with an interest in and love for this glorious art.
