Book Elementary Geometry Plane and Solid

Download or read book Elementary Geometry Plane and Solid written by Thomas F. Holgate and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Geometry Plane and Solid: For Use in High Schools and Academies When we speak of a point or a line, a straight line or a crooked line, everybody knows in a general way what is meant. In the minds of persons not familiar with the strict sense in which these terms are used in Geometry, it may be that the words point' and line are associated with marks of some sort, made for example with a pen or pencil; they may think of a point as a dot, and of a line as a long, narrow mark, but in spite of this association the true meaning of the terms 'point, ' 'line, ' straight, ' 'crooked, ' etc., is pretty clearly understood. It is not at all certain that definitions could be given in words which would convey an intelligent idea of the meaning of these terms to a person not already familiar with the thought conveyed by them, still a few words of comment may serve to fix the attention upon some properties of points and lines which are fundamental in the study of Geometry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Geometry: Plane, Solid, and Spherical; With Numerous Exercises Illustrative of the Principles of Each Book The favor with which the author's smaller work on Elemen tary Geometry has been received has induced him to under take the present more complete work, in the hope that it may prove equally useful to the higher classes Of learners for whom it is intended. While each Book has been made fuller, the same plan has, for the most part, been followed as in the former work: as in that, numerous practical questions illustrative of each Book, and theorems for original demonstration are introduced, serv ing as practical applications of the principles of the Book, and for discipline in discovering methods Of demonstration. In addition to the exercises at the end of each Book many more, arranged in proper order, have been added at the close Of the whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Plane and Solid Geometry: For Elementary Students In the examples appended to the articles and chapters numerical answers are generally given, with the object of inducing students to acquire the habit of measuring results. A student is not expected to work all the examples, or even to make himself acquainted with every method of proceed ing that may be explained in the text. Book New Plane Geometry Classic Reprint

Download or read book New Plane Geometry Classic Reprint written by Wooster Woodruff Beman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Plane Geometry In Algebra he has studied, among other things, the equation, and has found that if A a: 1 5, a: must equal 12. In Geometry he is to study form, and he will find, for example, that two triangles must necessarily be equal if the three sides of the one are respectively equal to the three sides of the other. Before beginning the subject, however, there are certain terms which, although familiar, are used with such exactness as to require careful explanation. These terms are solid, sur face, line, angle (with various kinds of each), and point. As with most elementary mathematical terms, such as number, space, etc., it is difficult to give them simple and satisfactory definition. Explanations can, however, be given which will lead the student to a reasonable understanding of them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
