Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Experimental Mechanics In this book an attempt is made to combine theory and practice as closely as possible. Success in teaching is in proportion to the extent to which the active initiative of the student is aroused, and nothing is so effective in this respect as laboratory work, if it be of the right kind. The use of the hand and the eye affords an invaluable stimulus to the imagination and the reason. Without such personal work the interest awakened by a good lecture is apt to be superficial and temporary, and the preparation insured by recitations is too often reluctant and unfruitful. Mechanics is the most fundamental and least attractive part of physics, and in the teaching of it lectures and recitations need all of the aid that laboratory work can supply. A grasp of principles is of more value to the average student than skill in measurement. While the exercises in this book have been chosen chiefly with a view to the elucidation of principles, the need of an adequate degree of precision in the necessary measurements has been kept in mind. In most cases a test of the accuracy of the work is supplied by a comparison of the results of theory and experiment. The course is not a substitute for, but is preliminary to, a course in the more precise measurement of physical constants. Book An Elementary Treatise on Theoretical Mechanics Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Elementary Treatise on Theoretical Mechanics Classic Reprint written by James Hopwood Jeans and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Theoretical Mechanics The primary aim of the present book is to supply for students beginning the study of Theoretical Mechanics a course of such a nature as shall emphasize the fundamental physical principles of the subject. Different students will of course approach the study of mechanics with different interests, different aims, and different amounts of mathematical equipment, so that it may not be possible to produce a single book which shall exactly fit the requirements of every class of student. But I believe that all students of mechanics, no matter what their aims and intentions may be, will be in the same position in one respect, namely that they will best begin the study of the subject by trying to acquire a firm grasp of the physical principles, leaving aside at first all mathematical developments and all practical applications, except in so far as these contribute to the elucidation of the fundamental physical principles. I am aware that this belief is not held by all teachers of mechanics, some of whom regard the laws of mechanics simply as working rules to be acquired as rapidly as possible for their utilitarian value, while others appear to regard them in the same light as the rules of a game, the game consisting in the solution of mathematical puzzles, most of which have no conceivable reference to the facts of nature. I find it hard to believe that there can be any considerable class of students for whom either of these points of view is the best. As regards the former, I feel that a student who cannot get, or does not wish to get, a clear understanding of mechanical principles would be well advised not to enter a profession in which his work will consist in the handling of mechanical problems; and as regards the latter, that a student who wishes merely to obtain material for puzzle solving would do better to turn his attention to chess or double acrostics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trieste Publishing has a massive catalogue of classic book titles. Our aim is to provide readers with the highest quality reproductions of fiction and non-fiction literature that has stood the test of time. The many thousands of books in our collection have been sourced from libraries and private collections around the world. The titles that Trieste Publishing has chosen to be part of the collection have been scanned to simulate the original. Our readers see the books the same way that their first readers did decades or a hundred or more years ago. Books from that period are often spoiled by imperfections that did not exist in the original. Imperfections could be in the form of blurred text, photographs, or missing pages. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Generally, Trieste books are purchased singly - on demand, however they may also be purchased in bulk. Readers interested in bulk purchases are invited to contact us directly to enquire about our tailored bulk rates.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanics: An Elementary d104-Book Theoretical and Practical I believe it to be desirable that a student should commence the study of Mechanics With Kinematics and Kinetics, and 'have therefore arranged the book on this plan. At the same time it Will, I hope, be found that the Statics is in great measure independent of the other part of the subject, though at the cost of some repetition. It will be possible therefore for a teacher to take it before the Kinematics. In the Third Part some of the simple experimental laws of Hydrostatics are discussed and explained. The book has grown considerably beyond the limits of my lectures, though it is by no means a complete treatise on Elementary Mechanics still I h0pe it may prove useful as an introduction to the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Mechanics A few years' experience, both as Student and as Tutor, has led me to a grateful appreciation of the method of teach ing which is at present pursued by our University; one of the highest aims of which is to promote habits of rapid and accurate thought, and in this it is eminently successful. But the nature of the training adopted for this purpose has proved injurious to the style of our Mathematical Literature, more especially in the department of Natural Philosophy. Our educational books of Natural Science, in seeking to fulfil the requirements of the senate-house, have become mere collections of definite propositions; generally containing, it is true, all the known facts and the mathematical deductions dependent upon them which appertain to the respective subjects, but seldom offering the smallest relief to the barren ness which is incidental to such compositions: in this shape they have lost all the fulness and freshness of life; all popular illustration, all freedom of expression has been denied them; they have been deprived, in fact, of nearly all the charms that usually render the pursuit of science fascinating to the young.
