Book Experimental Mechanics of Solids

Download or read book Experimental Mechanics of Solids written by Cesar A. Sciammarella and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-03-26 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental solid mechanics is the study of materials to determine their physical properties. This study might include performing a stress analysis or measuring the extent of displacement, shape, strain and stress which a material suffers under controlled conditions. In the last few years there have been remarkable developments in experimental techniques that measure shape, displacement and strains and these sorts of experiments are increasingly conducted using computational techniques. Experimental Mechanics of Solids is a comprehensive introduction to the topics, technologies and methods of experimental mechanics of solids. It begins by establishing the fundamentals of continuum mechanics, explaining key areas such as the equations used, stresses and strains, and two and three dimensional problems. Having laid down the foundations of the topic, the book then moves on to look at specific techniques and technologies with emphasis on the most recent developments such as optics and image processing. Most of the current computational methods, as well as practical ones, are included to ensure that the book provides information essential to the reader in practical or research applications. Key features: Presents widely used and accepted methodologies that are based on research and development work of the lead author Systematically works through the topics and theories of experimental mechanics including detailed treatments of the Moire, Speckle and holographic optical methods Includes illustrations and diagrams to illuminate the topic clearly for the reader Provides a comprehensive introduction to the topic, and also acts as a quick reference guide This comprehensive book forms an invaluable resource for graduate students and is also a point of reference for researchers and practitioners in structural and materials engineering.

Book Experimental Mechanics

Download or read book Experimental Mechanics written by B. E. Rossi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental Mechanics presents the proceedings of the First International Congress on Experimental Mechanics, held at the Hotel New Yorker in New York City, on November 1–3, 1961. This book presents the application of the methods of experimental mechanics to technical problems. Organized into 21 chapters, this compilation of papers begins with an overview of the experimental techniques developed for different basic and applied research on strength of materials, performance of hydraulic machinery, and accuracy of mechanisms and machine tools. This text then surveys the developments in the field of mechanical measurements, including rubber gage, bolt gage, digital strain indicators, and waterproofed strain gage. Other chapters consider the experimental study of the transient response of a rocket sled with a vertically malaligned center of gravity. The final chapter deals with the conditions of collapse of stiffened cylindrical shells beyond the proportional limit of the material. Experimental stress analysts will find this book useful.

Book Elementary Experimental Mechanics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Experimental Mechanics Classic Reprint written by A. Wilmer Duff and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Experimental Mechanics In this book an attempt is made to combine theory and practice as closely as possible. Success in teaching is in proportion to the extent to which the active initiative of the student is aroused, and nothing is so effective in this respect as laboratory work, if it be of the right kind. The use of the hand and the eye affords an invaluable stimulus to the imagination and the reason. Without such personal work the interest awakened by a good lecture is apt to be superficial and temporary, and the preparation insured by recitations is too often reluctant and unfruitful. Mechanics is the most fundamental and least attractive part of physics, and in the teaching of it lectures and recitations need all of the aid that laboratory work can supply. A grasp of principles is of more value to the average student than skill in measurement. While the exercises in this book have been chosen chiefly with a view to the elucidation of principles, the need of an adequate degree of precision in the necessary measurements has been kept in mind. In most cases a test of the accuracy of the work is supplied by a comparison of the results of theory and experiment. The course is not a substitute for, but is preliminary to, a course in the more precise measurement of physical constants. Book Elementary Quantum Mechanics

Download or read book Elementary Quantum Mechanics written by David S. Saxon and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-07-24 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on lectures for an undergraduate UCLA course in quantum mechanics, this volume focuses on the formulas of quantum mechanics rather than applications. Widely used in both upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses, it offers a broad self-contained survey rather than in-depth treatments. Topics include the dual nature of matter and radiation, state functions and their interpretation, linear momentum, the motion of a free particle, Schrödinger's equation, approximation methods, angular momentum, and many other subjects. In the interests of keeping the mathematics as simple as possible, most of the book is confined to considerations of one-dimensional systems. A selection of 150 problems, many of which require prolonged study, amplify the text's teachings and an appendix contains solutions to 50 representative problems. This edition also includes a new Introduction by Joseph A. Rudnick and Robert Finkelstein.

Book A History of the Work Concept

Download or read book A History of the Work Concept written by Agamenon R. E. Oliveira and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the history of the concept of work from its earliest stages and shows that its further formalization leads to equilibrium principle and to the principle of virtual works, and so pointing the way ahead for future research and applications. The idea that something remains constant in a machine operation is very old and has been expressed by many mathematicians and philosophers such as, for instance, Aristotle. Thus, a concept of energy developed. Another important idea in machine operation is Archimedes' lever principle. In modern times the concept of work is analyzed in the context of applied mechanics mainly in Lazare Carnot mechanics and the mechanics of the new generation of polytechnical engineers like Navier, Coriolis and Poncelet. In this context the word "work" is finally adopted. These engineers are also responsible for the incorporation of the concept of work into the discipline of economics when they endeavoured to combine the study of the work of machines and men together.
