The difficulty is, not so much in the matter of what to include, but What to exclude. For stu dents it would seem desirable that an opportunity should be afforded to examine first hand and to make preparations from at least some of the drugs which they are told about in the lectures and read of in the text books, and which they, later, are to use in their practice. Veterinarians, even more than physicians perhaps, compound their prescriptions. On this account, examples of the various pharmacopoeial preparations, as well as many unofficial ones, have be'en included. Probably in no other laboratory course is there as much care and accuracy required and this, in itself, is a valuable experience for the student. The formulary, at the end of the book, is composed of useful prescriptions. Some of them have been developed from our own experience, while the others have been collected from various sources - due credit having been given, so far as possible. This feature has been introduced primarily to give the students prac tice in compounding prescriptions. It is believed, however, that when the student becomes a practitioner, he may find many of these prescriptions of direct advantage in his practice. Finally, as stated in the previous edition, little originality can be claimed for this work; the writer has drawn freely. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Materia Medica and Pharmacy: For Medical Students As the authors have not found a book on Pharmacy and Materia Mediea, such as seemed to meet the needs of the students attending the course of instruction given in these subjects in the University of Toronto, they have felt it necessary to undertake the preparation of a short text-book. Their reluctance to undertake the preparation of another medical text-book has led them to carefully examine the books upon these subjects now upon the market; yet none seem to fulfil the requirements that they considered essential. Many of the books dealing with this work contain as well Pharmacology and Therapeutics, which are often not up-to-date nor accurate, or if they be accurate the Pharmacy and Materia Mediea have been neglected. As there are good text-books of Pharmacology, the authors have considered it inadvisable to include any pharmacology whatever. The other texts upon the market, which deal with the pharmacy in an adequate manner are too often written by American authors and deal largely with the American Pharmacopoeia. The arrangement of the sections in many books dealing with the materia mediea is also often the authors consider unfortunate. The classification of the drugs according to their botanical, mineral, or animal origin is no longer of importance. Nor does a pharmacological classification, where so much overlapping occurs, furnish a basis for an arrangement useful for reference purposes. These considerations have forced the authors to compile this little book and they hope that it will prove an aid to many medical students in gaining the necessary knowledge of a now too much neglected subject. In its most comprehensive sense it embraces all agents which are capable of making sanative impressions on the human sys tem, including hygienic remedies, as diet, exercise, and climate; surgical and mechanical remedies; and certain physical agents, as heat, light, and electricity: but, as employed in this work, it has a more restricted sense, and applies only to the consideration of those material substances derived from the animal, vegetable, or mineral kingdom, which are used as pharmacological agents or medicines. Therapeutics is that division of the science which treats of the various actions and effects of agents upon the diseased system, and their application for the cure, alleviation, or prevention of disease. Medicines may be defined to be those substances which possess the power of affecting the solids and fluids of the body, thereby producing certain modifications of the vital functions, which render them serviceable in the treatment of disease. They differ from aliments in resisting the digestive powers, and consequently are not adapted to supply growth, to repair waste, and to main tain the various functions at the healthy standard. Poisons differ from medicines only in the degree of theif effects, and the uses to which they are applied; for the most powerful poisons become, when administered with proper precautions, very valu able medicines.
