Book excerpt: Social and emotional learning has been recognized for positively impacting students' social, emotional, behavioral, and academic outcomes (Durlak et al., 2011; Dusenbury & Weissberg, 2017; Taylor et al., 2017). State departments of education have taken this research and implemented statewide social and emotional learning standards for educators to incorporate into their curriculum (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning [CASEL], 2019; Ecklund et al., 2018; Yoder et al., 2020). However, there is a dearth of research on the experiences of educators who plan, prepare, deliver, and evaluate the SEL standards. Additionally, the 2020-2021 school year was profoundly impacted by the COVID-19 health pandemic that created additional challenges for educators trying to meet academic and SEL standards (Darling-Hammond & Hyler, 2020). The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of elementary educators who were implementing the state SEL standards during the COVID-19 health pandemic. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 elementary educators licensed as either general education classroom teachers, principals, or school counselors and worked for at least two years. Participants were from a midwestern state that had kindergarten through twelfth grade SEL state standards. Moustakas' (1994) phenomenological reduction process was utilized to describe the essence of the participants' experience that included: a need to prioritize SEL, a focus on relationship building while navigating barriers to connection, awareness of adult SEL needs, and educational inequities highlighted by COVID-19. Implications for elementary educators, educational training programs, and educational policy makers are discussed in addition to recommendations for future research.

Book excerpt: This qualitative case study explores educators’ experiences in a suburban elementary school during the implementation stages of a new social-emotional learning curriculum. This research combines educators’ first-person accounts of the social-emotional learning curriculum implementation before and during the process as well as analyzes the results of their experiences as a whole. Altogether, this paper investigates the central phenomenon: What are the experiences of elementary educators in a suburban elementary school implementing social-emotional learning curriculum? Participants were invited individually to take part in the interview process. Data collected were analyzed through a series of codes and aggregated into themes. Participants reflected on professional development given before and during the implementation process. Data analysis illustrated that while participants believed in the value of the new social-emotional learning curriculum, they felt ill-prepared to teach it. Further research recommendations include establishing a system to elongate the implementation process during the school year by way of a peer-coaching component, monthly staff development led by peers, and staff members sharing curriculum success stories they have encountered in their classrooms.

The most pre-eminent area of deleterious impact was observed in children’s social emotional state upon return to in-person learning. Students struggled with interpersonal relationships as well as self-regulation. However, existing research and theory suggest that social emotional learning (SEL) intervention can improve interpersonal and interoceptive outcomes in students experiencing post-covid maladaptive behaviors. This quantitative research study examines the impact that SEL has on students’ social emotional state across U.S. public schools in two core social emotional areas of competency: self-management and social awareness. The researcher employed a cross correlational analysis design to glean the extent to which SEL intervention promoted improvement in targeted soft skills. Results demonstrated that while SEL intervention has an average positive effect overall for improving soft skills within the domains of self-management and social awareness, the most improvement in demonstrated behaviors was seen in the domain of self-management. The implications of the study suggest that social emotional learning instruction should be continuously interwoven into the fabric of educational practice and curriculum to cultivate a robust reservoir of resilience for children to draw upon at any given time. Possibilities for future research include a qualitative study focusing on interviews with teachers, educational leaders, and families in the community to determine areas of socio-emotional need for children as well as deeper neuro-social research to delve into the reasoning behind imbalances of improvement outcomes among individual core competency skills.

Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated school buildings to close in March of 2020 across the United States. From that time forward, many students remained in virtual learning environments, unable to step onto campus. The remote environments were isolating and struggled to support the academic or social and emotional needs of many students. The inability to access the supports from the physical school environment caused additional challenges for certain student populations, especially those who are considered at-risk academically or described as vulnerable due to conditions within the home environment. This mixed methods action research study, framed around the theoretical foundations of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and the Science of Learning and Development model, measured the impact of a social and emotional learning, online mentoring framework on levels of student engagement and connectedness. Teachers met virtually with small groups of students for six weeks, implementing lessons that focused on CASEL's social and emotional learning competencies. Both qualitative and quantitative data from surveys and focus groups measured the impact of these lessons. While the implementation of the framework did not significantly impact levels of engagement, it did yield a substantial impact on connectedness within the elementary environment. The study also explored how professional development can support staff in meeting specific needs of vulnerable students. The findings indicated that comprehensive professional development was needed to meet the needs of this population of students. Such professional development should focus on student need and support fostering relationships within the school environment in order to mitigate the educational inequities that result from isolated, remote learning environments.
