Book History of Cryptography and Cryptanalysis

Download or read book History of Cryptography and Cryptanalysis written by John F. Dooley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-23 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This accessible textbook presents a fascinating review of cryptography and cryptanalysis across history. The text relates the earliest use of the monoalphabetic cipher in the ancient world, the development of the “unbreakable” Vigenère cipher, and an account of how cryptology entered the arsenal of military intelligence during the American Revolutionary War. Moving on to the American Civil War, the book explains how the Union solved the Vigenère ciphers used by the Confederates, before investigating the development of cipher machines throughout World War I and II. This is then followed by an exploration of cryptology in the computer age, from public-key cryptography and web security, to criminal cyber-attacks and cyber-warfare. Looking to the future, the role of cryptography in the Internet of Things is also discussed, along with the potential impact of quantum computing. Topics and features: presents a history of cryptology from ancient Rome to the present day, with a focus on cryptology in the 20th and 21st centuries; reviews the different types of cryptographic algorithms used to create secret messages, and the various methods for breaking such secret messages; provides engaging examples throughout the book illustrating the use of cryptographic algorithms in different historical periods; describes the notable contributions to cryptology of Herbert Yardley, William and Elizebeth Smith Friedman, Lester Hill, Agnes Meyer Driscoll, and Claude Shannon; concludes with a review of tantalizing unsolved mysteries in cryptology, such as the Voynich Manuscript, the Beale Ciphers, and the Kryptos sculpture. This engaging work is ideal as both a primary text for courses on the history of cryptology, and as a supplementary text for advanced undergraduate courses on computer security. No prior background in mathematics is assumed, beyond what would be encountered in an introductory course on discrete mathematics.

Book Understanding and Applying Cryptography and Data Security

Download or read book Understanding and Applying Cryptography and Data Security written by Adam J. Elbirt and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2009-04-09 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A How-to Guide for Implementing Algorithms and Protocols Addressing real-world implementation issues, Understanding and Applying Cryptography and Data Security emphasizes cryptographic algorithm and protocol implementation in hardware, software, and embedded systems. Derived from the author’s teaching notes and research publications, the text is designed for electrical engineering and computer science courses. Provides the Foundation for Constructing Cryptographic Protocols The first several chapters present various types of symmetric-key cryptographic algorithms. These chapters examine basic substitution ciphers, cryptanalysis, the Data Encryption Standard (DES), and the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). Subsequent chapters on public-key cryptographic algorithms cover the underlying mathematics behind the computation of inverses, the use of fast exponentiation techniques, tradeoffs between public- and symmetric-key algorithms, and the minimum key lengths necessary to maintain acceptable levels of security. The final chapters present the components needed for the creation of cryptographic protocols and investigate different security services and their impact on the construction of cryptographic protocols. Offers Implementation Comparisons By examining tradeoffs between code size, hardware logic resource requirements, memory usage, speed and throughput, power consumption, and more, this textbook provides students with a feel for what they may encounter in actual job situations. A solutions manual is available to qualified instructors with course adoptions.

Book Cryptanalysis of Number Theoretic Ciphers

Download or read book Cryptanalysis of Number Theoretic Ciphers written by Samuel S. Wagstaff, Jr. and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-08-22 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the heart of modern cryptographic algorithms lies computational number theory. Whether you're encrypting or decrypting ciphers, a solid background in number theory is essential for success. Written by a number theorist and practicing cryptographer, Cryptanalysis of Number Theoretic Ciphers takes you from basic number theory to the inner workings of ciphers and protocols. First, the book provides the mathematical background needed in cryptography as well as definitions and simple examples from cryptography. It includes summaries of elementary number theory and group theory, as well as common methods of finding or constructing large random primes, factoring large integers, and computing discrete logarithms. Next, it describes a selection of cryptographic algorithms, most of which use number theory. Finally, the book presents methods of attack on the cryptographic algorithms and assesses their effectiveness. For each attack method the author lists the systems it applies to and tells how they may be broken with it. Computational number theorists are some of the most successful cryptanalysts against public key systems. Cryptanalysis of Number Theoretic Ciphers builds a solid foundation in number theory and shows you how to apply it not only when breaking ciphers, but also when designing ones that are difficult to break.

Download or read book Fundamentals of Cryptology written by Henk C.A. van Tilborg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The protection of sensitive information against unauthorized access or fraudulent changes has been of prime concern throughout the centuries. Modern communication techniques, using computers connected through networks, make all data even more vulnerable for these threats. Also, new issues have come up that were not relevant before, e. g. how to add a (digital) signature to an electronic document in such a way that the signer can not deny later on that the document was signed by him/her. Cryptology addresses the above issues. It is at the foundation of all information security. The techniques employed to this end have become increasingly mathematical of nature. This book serves as an introduction to modern cryptographic methods. After a brief survey of classical cryptosystems, it concentrates on three main areas. First of all, stream ciphers and block ciphers are discussed. These systems have extremely fast implementations, but sender and receiver have to share a secret key. Public key cryptosystems (the second main area) make it possible to protect data without a prearranged key. Their security is based on intractable mathematical problems, like the factorization of large numbers. The remaining chapters cover a variety of topics, such as zero-knowledge proofs, secret sharing schemes and authentication codes. Two appendices explain all mathematical prerequisites in great detail. One is on elementary number theory (Euclid's Algorithm, the Chinese Remainder Theorem, quadratic residues, inversion formulas, and continued fractions). The other appendix gives a thorough introduction to finite fields and their algebraic structure.

Book The Block Cipher Companion

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lars R. Knudsen
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2011-10-25
  • ISBN : 364217342X

Download or read book The Block Cipher Companion written by Lars R. Knudsen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-25 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Block ciphers encrypt blocks of plaintext, messages, into blocks of ciphertext under the action of a secret key, and the process of encryption is reversed by decryption which uses the same user-supplied key. Block ciphers are fundamental to modern cryptography, in fact they are the most widely used cryptographic primitive – useful in their own right, and in the construction of other cryptographic mechanisms. In this book the authors provide a technically detailed, yet readable, account of the state of the art of block cipher analysis, design, and deployment. The authors first describe the most prominent block ciphers and give insights into their design. They then consider the role of the cryptanalyst, the adversary, and provide an overview of some of the most important cryptanalytic methods. The book will be of value to graduate and senior undergraduate students of cryptography and to professionals engaged in cryptographic design. An important feature of the presentation is the authors' exhaustive bibliography of the field, each chapter closing with comprehensive supporting notes.
