Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Course of Christian Philosophy, Vol. 1: Based on the Principles of the Best Scholastic Authors It is with pleasure that we authorize Brother Louis, Sub-Director of the Boarding School of Beziers, to publish for the use of his pupils his Course of Christian Philosophy based on the Principles of the best Scholastic Authors, which by our order he submitted to a careful examination. The learned priest to whom we entrusted the revision of the work has returned it with a flattering testimonial of its merit. We shall, therefore, be glad to see it in the hands of the young men of our schools, and to learn that its principles have been made familiar even to the pupils of our first classes. For it is these old philosophical teachings, which prepared our fathers to become such good theologians, and which rendered their faith so enlightened and their reasoning so sound. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Philosophy, Vol. 1 Christian philosophy is necessarily founded upon conceptions of the nature of God, of the origin and nature of the universe, and of the relation of God to the universe and to man. In our time, the greatest con fusion exists, even within the precincts of the Christian chui ch, with regard to these fundamental ideas and conceptions which contradict each other are recognized, either from an external eclecticism, or from an internal inversion by the Destructive Reason with the view to confound opposite ideas in the interest of a nihilistic or of a pantheistic philosophy. This perversion and inver Sion of Christian thought are produced by transcendental philosophy (german in origin) and by evolutionary sci ence (english in origin), which work together to establish in the Church an Antichristian, materialistic, and panthe istic philosophy. There is, in our century, and extending to all departments of intelligence, a renaissance of Pagan thought quite analogous to that effected in the fifteenth century and onward, and our period, equally with that, calls for a new birth or regeneration of Christian thought from a more universal insight into the fundamental ideas of Christianity. From 'the very need of it, therefore, we may look for a new dogmatic form of Christian theology that shall iflcorporate the fundamental and primitive ideas of Christianity, as an historical institution, in forms of imaginative thought which Shall correspond to that more internal condition of the Reason and of the Re. In carrying out this object, he has chosen such topics as were rather practical than speculative; for utility, and not display, has been the principle, under which he has endeavoured to act, in preparing them for the press. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past several decades have seen a renaissance in Christian philosophy, led by the work of Alvin Plantinga, Nicholas Wolterstorff, William Alston, Eleonore Stump, and others. In the spirit of Plantinga s famous manifesto, Advice to Christian Philosophers, James K. A. Smith here offers not only advice to Pentecostal philosophers but also some Pentecostal advice to Christian philosophers. In this inaugural Pentecostal Manifestos volume Smith begins from the conviction that implicit in Pentecostal and charismatic spirituality is a tacit worldview or social imaginary. Thinking in Tongues unpacks and articulates the key elements of this Pentecostal worldview and then explores their implications for philosophical reflection on ontology, epistemology, aesthetics, language, science, and philosophy of religion. In each case, Smith demonstrates how the implicit wisdom of Pentecostal spirituality makes unique contributions to current conversations in Christian philosophy.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Philosophy, Vol. 1: Being the Science of Reasoning and the Art of Correct Reasoning According to Science, or Logic, Critically Treated and Applied It will not do to grant as true the poet's proposition that the noblest study of mankind is man. God and Infinity, and Truth and Good, as being' of and coeternal with God, are grander and nobler studies; and our noblest study after these is to know and see things truly, just as God knows and sees them in their real being, as nearly as we possibly can with Our limited minds; not in their mere qualities as physical science views them. Weight, color, hardness, affinity, attraction, repulsion, motion, extension, mode, form are all qualities, not realities; and it is realities that we shall seek for in Metaphysics.
