Book Elementary Agriculture and Horticulture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Agriculture and Horticulture Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-08 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Agriculture and Horticulture This Manual is intended particularly for the use of the teacher. The work herein outlined is expected to meet the needs of busy teachers who may not have had much training in the fundamental principles of the sciences underlying agriculture. Some training, of course, is necessary, but the wide-awake teacher who is willing to put forth some personal effort may accomplish something worth while, if the lessons here planned for his guidance are followed out. The topics are selected so as to be adapted to the average rural school of one teacher, and are sufficiently elastic to be made use of in any part of Ontario, even in the cities. The seasonal arrangement is made use of because, unlike many other subjects, practical agriculture must necessarily follow the seasons. The various duties per taining to the farm should be studied when they occur, not a month before or a month after. The lessons are outlined so as to require the laboratory method, and the pupils are expected to do agriculture, not simply read about it. Moreover, most, if not all, of the lessons are of such a character as can be taken up in a half-hour period, with a little forethought, or they can be left off, and concluded during a class period a day or so afterwards. It is not intended that each school should complete all the lessons given, nor is it intended to confine the classes strictly in every case to these lessons. If the teacher wishes to undertake practical exercises, other than those outlined, which he considers suitable to the locality, there could be no objection offered, so long as such exercises fall within the Course of Study. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Agriculture and School Gardening at Winthrop, Vol. 3 Too often, also, has the boy from the country had a hard time among his fellows, when in pursuit of learning he has left the rural school and entered that of the city. Often have hay seed and other opprobrious epithets been hurled at him, and his greatest asset in life, a knowledge of hay, cotton and corn, been the subject of derision. A study of hay, cotton and corn will change all this. The city bred boy will honor and respect the farmer boy, who has.a greater knowledge 'of these things than he has. The study of the farm, its conditions, its prospects, its relation to other great social industries, is sure to bring about a truer estimate of the value of farm life, a keener appreciation of the dignity of labor and a closer fellowship between country and city. Book New Elementary Agriculture

Download or read book New Elementary Agriculture written by Charles E. Bessey and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Elementary Agriculture: An Elementary Text Book Dealing With Plants, Insects, Birds, Weather, and Animals of the Farm Nebraska is an agricultural state. The products of her soil are the basis of her industries and her prosperity. The children of our great state of Nebraska should be familiar with our crops, our grains and grasses, our flowers and fruits, our trees and shrubs and weeds, our domestic animals and birds and insects. Our children should have a practical knowledge of the management of a farm, of the composition of the soil, and of the adaptability of the farm and its soil for the cultivation of certain plants and the counter effect of such plant growth upon the soil. The children of Nebraska should love nature, they should be taught nature's ways and means, taught to observe her phenomena closely and in such a manner that they will learn to love her. Nearly all industries of mankind have their origin in the soil, and children should be led to see the relation between farm labor and its products and the marts of trade and commerce. Much of the work of the school, including instruction in geography, arithmetic, science, and literature might be correlated profitably with instruction in agriculture and nature study. A school garden with the actual work intelligently directed might prove an inspiration to honest toil and better living. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Elementary Agriculture The studies of the following pages constitute part of the laboratory course given with the subject of agriculture in the Fresno State Normal. They are designed to prepare teachers for presenting the subject of agriculture in the rural school. They are not predigested and ready for presentation to the child with teacher's story, introduction, description and conclusion complete, but are outlines to direct the student in pre paring the studies for presentation to the child. The work of the student is complete only when, through his own efforts, each study is ready, from the teacher's story to the conclusion, for presentation to school children. Through the preparation of these studies the student gets a broad knowledge of elementary agriculture, experience in pre paring subject matter and material for presenting agricultural studies and nature study lessons, and begins to find, understand, and appreciate the beauty of all things out of doors. It is hoped it will be a guide to every farmer and every city man who practises any horticulture about the home. It is thought that teachers of agriculture and elementary horticulture will find it suitable as a text to cover the general field, and to give some information about those practices which many people desire and which cannot be found in any single text. Since the work treats the subject from the standpoint of production of horticultural products as well as improve ments for the home, it should prove of value to anyone interested in this subject. Book Agriculture and Horticulture in the Rural Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Agriculture and Horticulture in the Rural Schools Classic Reprint written by David Felmley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agriculture and Horticulture in the Rural Schools In this advance agriculture is moving in, the same lines as all other trades and professions. The apprentice system is dying. Modern civilization is not satisfied with rule-of-thumb methods learned by imitation. It demands that all arts be rational arts intelligently based upon an underlying science, and has created the technical school to meet this demand. But not every farm er's son can attend the agricultural college. Nearly all must de pend upon the literature issued by such institutions. The bulletins are often too technical to appeal to the average farmer; they abound in scientific terms based upon distinctions of which he is ignorant. It is evident that the agricultural experiment station will never accomplish its purpose unless there is diffused among our farming population an elementary knowledge of the sciences relating to agriculture. The rural schools and the high schools attended by farmers' sons must provide the necessary instruction. There seems no other practical way. Book One Hundred Lessons in Elementary Agriculture

Download or read book One Hundred Lessons in Elementary Agriculture written by Aretas W. Nolan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred Lessons in Elementary Agriculture: A Manual and d104 of Elementary Agriculture for Rural Schools The preparation of this book is an effort to combine in convenient form the directions for the laboratory experiments, field exercises, text-book studies, and notebook work, which the author has found most practical and helpful in teaching elementary agriculture and nature-study in rural and consolidated schools. It has been the aim of the author to simplify the subject-matter, materials and methods usually presented in text-books on agriculture, so that the teacher in the one-room county school, in the grammar grades of a graded school or in the beginning years of a high school may find the lessons easily practical, within the range of the pupils' understanding, and full of profitable interest and educational value. It is a text-book and manual combined, for the purpose of leading away from the usual text-book method of teaching, to the method of first-hand contact with the real things of Agriculture. If the work is not conducted by means of real things, the educational value is lost, and the information given not permanently retained. The lessons do not follow each other in very close sequence, each lesson being independent, permitting the teacher to choose as the season and occasion make the materials available. It is not the purpose to make "ready made" lessons, which will discourage or take away the need of effort on the part of the teacher. but to furnish suggestive subject-matter and methods upon which he may build from his own initiative and resourcefulness.
