Book Elegies II

Download or read book Elegies II written by Tibullus and published by Oxford [England] : Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full and detailed commentary on the second book of Tibullus' elegies since K.F. Smith's edition of 1913. It takes into account every significant advance in scholarship since then on Tibullus, elegy in general. The book provides an authoritative Latin text, based on the definitive Oxford Classical Text, an Introduction covering such topics as the chronology of Book II, its completeness and construction, and the main characters of the poems; and a comprehensive Commentary discussing all aspects of linguistic and literary interest in the poems: the problems of reference and the interpretation for instance, as well as notes on diction, style, themes, and metre. There are also introductory essays on each poem, discussing the background situation, genre, and main models. A critical appendix looks at all the textual points that substantially affect the understanding and appreciation of the elegies, a structural appendix explores the structure of the individual poems, and there are full indices.

Book Propertius in Love

Download or read book Propertius in Love written by Sextus Propertius and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2002-06-03 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These ardent, even obsessed, poems about erotic passion are among the brightest jewels in the crown of Latin literature. Written by Propertius, Rome's greatest poet of love, who was born around 50 b.c., a contemporary of Ovid, these elegies tell of Propertius' tormented relationship with a woman he calls "Cynthia." Their connection was sometimes blissful, more often agonizing, but as the poet came to recognize, it went beyond pride or shame to become the defining event of his life. Whether or not it was Propertius' explicit intention, these elegies extend our ideas of desire, and of the human condition itself.

Book excerpt: 'Delia, when flames engulf my bier you'll weep for me, and then you'll mix your kisses with sad tears.' Tibullus (?55-18 BC) was one of a group of poets known as the Latin elegists, whose number included Ovid and Propertius. Living in the age of Augustus, his poems reflect Augustan ideals, but they are above all notable for their emphasis on the personal, and for their subject-matter, love. Tibullus' elegies are addressed to two different mistresses, Delia and Nemesis, and a boy, Marathus. His pious and idealistic love for Delia is replaced by a more tortured affair with the cruel Nemesis, and the poet's elegies to Marathus give a broader perspective to his treatment of the subject. Anguish and betrayal characterize Tibullus' depiction of love's changing fortunes, in poetry that is passionate, vivid, and sometimes haunting. In this parallel text edition, A. M. Juster's eloquent translations are accompanied by an introduction and notes from Robert Maltby which discuss Tibullus' work in its literary and historical context. Together they demonstrate the achievements of this fine Roman poet. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Book Elegies I IV

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sextus Propertius
  • Publisher : University of Oklahoma Press
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 9780806134680
  • Pages : 510 pages

Download or read book Elegies I IV written by Sextus Propertius and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Latin poet Propertius (ca. 50–16 B.C.) is considered by many to be the greatest elegiac poet of Rome. Long neglected because of the obscurity of his thought and the vagaries of his syntax, Propertius has now emerged as a writer of compelling originality and intellectual power. In this authoritative edition of Propertius’s elegies, L. Richardson, jr, makes these challenging poems both intelligible and accessible. For students of literature and history alike, Propertius offers insights into the intellectual world of Augustan Rome and Roman society. His perplexities and frustrations, his struggles with himself and with his domineering and capricious mistress Cynthia, and his exhilarations and depressions all strike a surprisingly familiar chord for the modern reader. Through an in-depth introduction and explanatory notes, Richardson strives to make the poems as readable as possible, at the same time examining the complexities and textual difficulties of the texts. Each elegy is accompanied by an introductory note providing a literary interpretation of the poem, followed by full and detailed commentary.

Download or read book John Donne written by John Carey and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2011-11-03 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Donne is perhaps the most intellectual of English poets, and John Carey is perhaps the most intelligent of contemporary English literary critics. The encounter, as one might expect, is fierce and enthralling... This book is sensitive, searching, powerful, exciting, provocative and witty. It is a superb achievement.' Christopher Hill, TLS John Donne: Life, Mind and Art is a unique attempt to see Donne whole. Beginning with an account of his life, it takes as its domain not only the whole range of the poetry, but also the sermons, the letters, the spiritual and controversial works, and such highly personal documents as the treatise on suicide. The result is a clearer picture than has hitherto emerged of one of the most intricate and compelling of literary personalities. 'The one book we have needed all along... A magnificent exercise in reappraisal. I have never read a critical work which reaches as deeply inside the mind of its subject.' Jonathan Raban, Sunday Times 'Carey's book is itself alive with the kind of energy it attributes to Donne.' Christopher Ricks, London Review of Books

Book The Impact of Latin Culture on Medieval and Early Modern Scottish Writing

Download or read book The Impact of Latin Culture on Medieval and Early Modern Scottish Writing written by Ian Johnson and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late medieval and early modern periods, Scottish latinity had its distinctive stamp, most intriguingly so in its effects upon the literary vernacular and on themes of national identity. This volume shows how, when viewed through the prism of latinity, Scottish textuality was distinctive and fecund. The flowering of Scottish writing owed itself to a subtle combination of literary praxis, the ideal of eloquentia, and ideological deftness, which enabled writers to service a burgeoning national literary tradition.

Book excerpt: This indispensable volume provides a complete course on Latin erotic elegy, allowing students to trace a coherent narrative of the genre's rise and fall, and to understand its relationship to the changes that marked the collapse of the Roman republic, and the founding of the empire. The book begins with a detailed and wide-ranging introduction, looking at major figures, the evolution of the form, and the Roman context, with particular focus on the changing relations between the sexes. The texts that follow range from the earliest manifestations of erotic elegy, in Catullus, through Tibullus, Sulpicia (Rome's only female elegist), Propertius and Ovid. An accessible commentary explores the historical background, issues of language and style, and the relation of each piece to its author's larger body of work. The volume closes with an anthology of critical essays representative of the main trends in scholarship; these both illuminate the genre's most salient features and help the student understand its modern reception.
