Book excerpt: A "profound and provocative" new work by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Disgraced and American Dervish: an immigrant father and his son search for belonging—in post-Trump America, and with each other (Kirkus Reviews). One of the New York Times 10 Best Books of the Year One of Barack Obama's Favorite Books of 2020 Finalist for the 2021 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction A Best Book of 2020 * Washington Post * O Magazine * New York Times Book Review * Publishers Weekly "Passionate, disturbing, unputdownable." —Salman Rushdie A deeply personal work about identity and belonging in a nation coming apart at the seams, Homeland Elegies blends fact and fiction to tell an epic story of longing and dispossession in the world that 9/11 made. Part family drama, part social essay, part picaresque novel, at its heart it is the story of a father, a son, and the country they both call home. Ayad Akhtar forges a new narrative voice to capture a country in which debt has ruined countless lives and the gods of finance rule, where immigrants live in fear, and where the nation's unhealed wounds wreak havoc around the world. Akhtar attempts to make sense of it all through the lens of a story about one family, from a heartland town in America to palatial suites in Central Europe to guerrilla lookouts in the mountains of Afghanistan, and spares no one—least of all himself—in the process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fact that I neglected myself all my life became apparent to me when I met someone who I finally cared about with all my heart. I was not ready to meet her, because I still hadn't found who I truly was. I was lost. I hated my job, my finances, my life, and myself. She, on the other hand, had found herself early in life. She was an outgoing, beautiful, smart, funny, genuinely nice person. I can't fault her for not returning my feelings, because she knew that it would take time for me to get over my past. My past made me sad, and I loved her so much that I shared all that I was with her. Unfortunately, I may have shared too much because I eventually scared her away. I tried to get too close too fast when she wasn't ready. It was my fault. This is my pain that I have to carry around with me. This book is the result of my pain. She inspired me to write like I've never written before. All the feelings that were there for her are in this book. I am so blessed to have met her, because through my pain, I learned, many things. I learned that I could love unconditionally. I loved her so much that I shared all that I was and how I felt at the risk of losing her. I learned to have patience. I learned that time heals all wounds. Most of all, I learned to take care of myself first so I can take care of others later. The only way that I can have someone in my life is if I can confidently say that I am happy with myself and who I am. For this, I thank her from the bottom of my heart. This book is the end of my sorrow. It is my closure. It is the beginning of the rest of my life!

Book Boy Meets Girl

Download or read book Boy Meets Girl written by Christie Hodgen and published by Awp Award Series for the Novel. This book was released on 2022-04-16 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Told in two alternating timelines, this novel follows a friendship over twenty-five years. Boy Meets Girl is the story of a twenty-five-year friendship between Sammy Browne (young, idealistic, and broke) and Ben Eisenberg (older, jaded, and almost unimaginably rich)--two characters drawn together, and ultimately torn apart, by their differences. This novel tells the story of their relationship over the decades--from youthful flirtation to unrequited love, to long-term friendship that flourishes in middle age, to estrangement and then reunion. The novel unfolds in alternating chapters, toggling back and forth between Ben and Sammy as young people and in middle age, showing everything the characters hoped to become and how things turned out for them. Boy Meets Girl unfolds against the political and social backdrop of the last three decades, with Bill Clinton's election, the events of September 11, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and even the Trump era providing context and contrast for the personal stories of the main characters.

Book The Routledge Companion to Death and Literature

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Death and Literature written by W. Michelle Wang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-07 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Companion to Death and Literature seeks to understand the ways in which literature has engaged deeply with the ever-evolving relationship humanity has with its ultimate demise. It is the most comprehensive collection in this growing field of study and includes essays by Brian McHale, Catherine Belling, Ronald Schleifer, Helen Swift, and Ira Nadel, as well as the work of a generation of younger scholars from around the globe, who bring valuable transnational insights. Encompassing a diverse range of mediums and genres – including biography and autobiography, documentary, drama, elegy, film, the novel and graphic novel, opera, picturebooks, poetry, television, and more – the contributors offer a dynamic mix of approaches that range from expansive perspectives on particular periods and genres to extended analyses of select case studies. Essays are included from every major Western period, including Classical, Middle Ages, Renaissance, and so on, right up to the contemporary. This collection provides a telling demonstration of the myriad ways that humanity has learned to live with the inevitability of death, where “live with” itself might mean any number of things: from consoling, to memorializing, to rationalizing, to fending off, to evading, and, perhaps most compellingly of all, to escaping. Engagingly written and drawing on examples from around the world, this volume is indispensable to both students and scholars working in the fields of medical humanities, thanatography (death studies), life writing, Victorian studies, modernist studies, narrative, contemporary fiction, popular culture, and more.

Through alternating perspectives, we follow the family as they explore new territory, new living arrangements, and new complications. The mother returns to school. The father moves into an apartment. The girl squares off with her mother, while the boy struggles to make sense of the world. Book Time Is a Mother

Book excerpt: The New York Times-bestselling collection of poems from the award-winning writer Ocean Vuong "Take your time with these poems, and return to them often.” —The Washington Post How else do we return to ourselves but to fold The page so it points to the good part In this deeply intimate second poetry collection, Ocean Vuong searches for life among the aftershocks of his mother’s death, embodying the paradox of sitting within grief while being determined to survive beyond it. Shifting through memory, and in concert with the themes of his novel On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous, Vuong contends with personal loss, the meaning of family, and the cost of being the product of an American war in America. At once vivid, brave, and propulsive, Vuong’s poems circle fragmented lives to find both restoration as well as the epicenter of the break. The author of the critically acclaimed poetry collection Night Sky With Exit Wounds, winner of the 2016 Whiting Award, the 2017 T. S. Eliot Prize, and a 2019 MacArthur fellow, Vuong writes directly to our humanity without losing sight of the current moment. These poems represent a more innovative and daring experimentation with language and form, illuminating how the themes we perennially live in and question are truly inexhaustible. Bold and prescient, and a testament to tenderness in the face of violence, Time Is a Mother is a return and a forging forth all at once.
