Book excerpt: "Elegant Complexity is the first critical work to provide detailed and thorough commentary on each of the 192 sections of David Foster Wallace's masterful Infinite Jest. No other commentary on Infinite Jest recognizes that Wallace clearly divided the book into 28 chapters that are thematically unified. A chronology at the end of the study reorders each section of the novel into a sequential timeline that orients the reader and that could be used to support a chronological reading of the novel. Other helpful reference materials include a thematic outline, more chronologies, a map of one the novel's settings, lists of characters grouped by association, and an indexed list of references. Elegant Complexity orients the reader at the beginning of each section and keeps commentary separate for those readers who only want orientation. The researcher looking for specific characters or themes is provided a key at the beginning of each commentary. Carlisle explains the novel's complex plot threads (and discrepancies) with expert insight and clear commentary. The book is 99% spoiler-free for first-time readers of Infinite Jest."--Publisher's website.

Book Causality Meaningful Complexity and Embodied Cognition

Download or read book Causality Meaningful Complexity and Embodied Cognition written by A. Carsetti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-10 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arturo Carsetti According to molecular Biology, true invariance (life) can exist only within the framework of ongoing autonomous morphogenesis and vice versa. With respect to this secret dialectics, life and cognition appear as indissolubly interlinked. In this sense, for instance, the inner articulation of conceptual spaces appears to be linked to an inner functional development based on a continuous activity of selection and “anchorage” realised on semantic grounds. It is the work of “invention” and g- eration (in invariance), linked with the “rooting” of meaning, which determines the evolution, the leaps and punctuated equilibria, the conditions related to the unfo- ing of new modalities of invariance, an invariance which is never simple repetition and which springs on each occasion through deep-level processes of renewal and recovery. The selection perpetrated by meaning reveals its autonomy aboveall in its underpinning, in an objective way, the ongoing choice of these new modalities. As such it is not, then, concerned only with the game of “possibles”, offering itself as a simple channel for pure chance, but with providing a channel for the articulation of the “ le” in the humus of a semantic (and embodied) net in order to prepare the necessary conditionsfor a continuousrenewal and recoveryof original creativity. In effect, it is this autonomy in inventing new possible modules of incompressibility whichdeterminestheactualemergenceofnew(andtrue)creativity, whichalsotakes place through the “narration” of the effected construction.

This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infinite Jest has been hailed as one the great modern American novels and its author, David Foster Wallace, who committed suicide in 2008, as one of the most influential and innovative authors of the past 20 years. Don DeLillo called Infinite Jest a “three-stage rocket to the future,” a work “equal to the huge, babbling spin-out sweep of contemporary life,” while Time Magazine included Infinite Jest on its list of 100 Greatest Novels published between 1923-2006. David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest: A Reader's Guide was the first book to be published on the novel and is a key reference for those who wish to explore further. Infinite Jest has become an exemplar for difficulty in contemporary Fiction—its 1,079 pages full of verbal invention, oblique narration, and a scattered, nonlinear, chronology. In this comprehensively revised second edition, Burn maps Wallace's influence on contemporary American fiction, outlines Wallace's poetics, and provides a full-length study of the novel, drawing out the most important themes and ideas, before surveying Wallace's post-Infinite Jest output, including The Pale King.

Book excerpt: "Put together one of the world's best science writers with one of the universe's most fascinating subjects and you are bound to produce a wonderful book. . . . The subject of complexity is vital and controversial. This book is important and beautifully done."—Stephen Jay Gould "[Complexity] is that curious mix of complication and organization that we find throughout the natural and human worlds: the workings of a cell, the structure of the brain, the behavior of the stock market, the shifts of political power. . . . It is time science . . . thinks about meaning as well as counting information. . . . This is the core of the complexity manifesto. Read it, think about it . . . but don't ignore it."—Ian Stewart, Nature This second edition has been brought up to date with an essay entitled "On the Edge in the Business World" and an interview with John Holland, author of Emergence: From Chaos to Order.

Book Evolution of the Cerebellar Sense of Self

Download or read book Evolution of the Cerebellar Sense of Self written by John Montgomery and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-24 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cerebellum is an intriguing component of the brain. In humans it occupies only 10% of the brain volume, yet has approximately 69 billion neurons; that is 80% of the nerve cells in the brain. The cerebellum first arose in jawed vertebrates such as sharks, and early vertebrates also have an additional cerebellum-like structure in the hindbrain. Shark cerebellum-like structures function as adaptive filters to discriminate 'self' from 'other' in sensory inputs. It is likely that the true cerebellum evolved from these cerebellum-like precursors, and that their adaptive filter functionality was adopted for motor control; paving the way for the athleticism and movement finesse that we see in swimming, running, climbing and flying vertebrates. This book uses an evolutionary perspective to open up the exciting body of work that is cerebellar research to a wide audience. Understanding the brain is of interest to many people, from many different backgrounds, and for many different reasons. Therefore, understanding cerebellum is a significant step towards the wider challenge of understanding the brain. This book will be of interest to neuroscientists, neurologists and psychologists, in addition to computer scientists, and engineers concerned with machine/human interactions and robotics.

Book The Last Pillars of Darwinian Evolution Falsified

Download or read book The Last Pillars of Darwinian Evolution Falsified written by Jerry Bergman Ph.D. and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2022-05-12 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Documents the fact that the peer reviewed scientific evidence has falsified Darwinian evolution. Challenges the common beliefs about the evidence for evolution by logic and research. The first book, titled The Three Major Pillars of Darwinism Demolished, has falsified abiogenesis (the origin of life itself from non-life) mutations as the ultimate source of all genetic variety, and natural selection, which culls that variety to produce all life on Earth. This volume evaluated other major ‘evidences’ for Darwinian evolution, which have also been refuted by empirical science. These minor pillars are convergent evolution, homology, endosymbiosis, and the antibiotic resistance claim for evolution. It also shows the attempts to refute the irreducible complexity problem have failed and, likewise, co-option cannot explain the evolution of complex features seen in the natural world. In short, an objective review of the published peer-reviewed evidence in secular scientific journals has falsified Darwinian evolution.

Book Algebraic Complexity Theory

Download or read book Algebraic Complexity Theory written by Peter Bürgisser and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The algorithmic solution of problems has always been one of the major concerns of mathematics. For a long time such solutions were based on an intuitive notion of algorithm. It is only in this century that metamathematical problems have led to the intensive search for a precise and sufficiently general formalization of the notions of computability and algorithm. In the 1930s, a number of quite different concepts for this purpose were pro posed, such as Turing machines, WHILE-programs, recursive functions, Markov algorithms, and Thue systems. All these concepts turned out to be equivalent, a fact summarized in Church's thesis, which says that the resulting definitions form an adequate formalization of the intuitive notion of computability. This had and continues to have an enormous effect. First of all, with these notions it has been possible to prove that various problems are algorithmically unsolvable. Among of group these undecidable problems are the halting problem, the word problem theory, the Post correspondence problem, and Hilbert's tenth problem. Secondly, concepts like Turing machines and WHILE-programs had a strong influence on the development of the first computers and programming languages. In the era of digital computers, the question of finding efficient solutions to algorithmically solvable problems has become increasingly important. In addition, the fact that some problems can be solved very efficiently, while others seem to defy all attempts to find an efficient solution, has called for a deeper under standing of the intrinsic computational difficulty of problems.

Book Cultural Analysis and the Navigation of Complexity

Download or read book Cultural Analysis and the Navigation of Complexity written by Lisa Kaye Brandt and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2007 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complexities involved in social dilemmas and ecological troubles today challenge scientists to conduct analyses of cultural phenomena that push the boundaries of disciplines and blur the line between theory and practice. Problems are not so much to be solved as they are to be explained, predicted, and navigated. Luther P. Gerlach, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of Minnesota, has exercised immense influence on social science, policy, and practice to accomplish these challenges. Professor Gerlach is highly regarded within and beyond anthropology for two areas of outstanding research: groundbreaking work on social movements and pioneering studies of local-global environmental conflict, i.e. the conflict between local social, political, and economic control versus global ecological and economic interdependence. This volume's Preface traces Professor Gerlach's intellectual biography and the peer-reviewed chapters indicate the far-reaching impact he and his research continue to have on academic and applied science. Topics cover theories and methods as well as timely case studies in: -Global climate policy -Language and social movements -Environmental and ecosystem management -Public debate, environmental justice, and risk construction -Complexity theory and organizations -Cultural expression and archaic hunting methods -Energy use -Political economy and witch-killings -Public health.
