Book Electroweak Results from the SLD Experiment

Download or read book Electroweak Results from the SLD Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present an overview of the electroweak physics program of the SLD experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). A data sample of 550K Z° decays has been collected. This experiment utilizes a highly polarized electron beam, a small interaction volume, and a very precise pixel vertex detector. It is the first experiment at a linear electron collider. We present a preliminary result for the weak mixing angle, sin2([theta]{sub W}{sup eff}) = 0.23110 ± 0.00029. We also present a preliminary result for the parity violating parameter, A{sub b} = 0.898 ± 0.029. These measurements are used to test for physics beyond the Standard Model.

Book excerpt: Some experimental new Electroweak physics results measured at the LEP/SLD and the TEVATRON are discussed. The excellent accuracy achieved by the experiments still yield no significant evidence for deviation from the Standard Model predictions, or signal to physics beyond the Standard Model. The Higgs particle still has not been discovered and a low bound is given to its mass.

Book Precision Electroweak Physics with the SLD SLC The Left right Polarization Asymmetry

Download or read book Precision Electroweak Physics with the SLD SLC The Left right Polarization Asymmetry written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following a brief review of a commonly used general framework for the analysis of radiative corrections and possible new physics, the recent precision results from the SLD/SLC are discussed and used to test the standard electroweak model. In the 1993 SLD/SLC run, the SLD recorded 50,000 Z events produced by the collision of longitudinally polarized electrons on unpolarized positrons at a center-of-mass energy of 91.26 GeV. The luminosity-weighted average polarization of the SLC electron beam was (63.0 [plus-minus] 1.1)%. We measure the left-right cross-section asymmetry in Z boson production, A[sub LR], to be 0.1628 [plus-minus] 0.0071 (stat) [plus-minus] 0.0028 (syst) which determines the effective weak mixing angle to be sin[sup 2] [theta][sub W][sup eff] = 0.2292 [plus-minus] 0.0009 (stat) [plus-minus] 0.0004 (syst). When averaged with our 1992 result, we obtain sin[sup 2] [theta][sub W][sup eff] = 0.2294 [plus-minus] 0. 0010. This result differs from analogous LEP results at the level of about 2.5 [sigma]. The world averages of electroweak data are comfortably in agreement with the standard model.

Download or read book Physics at the Terascale written by Ian Brock and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-05-04 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by authors working at the forefront of research, this accessible treatment presents the current status of the field of collider-based particle physics at the highest energies available, as well as recent results and experimental techniques. It is clearly divided into three sections; The first covers the physics -- discussing the various aspects of the Standard Model as well as its extensions, explaining important experimental results and highlighting the expectations from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The second is dedicated to the involved technologies and detector concepts, and the third covers the important - but often neglected - topics of the organisation and financing of high-energy physics research. A useful resource for students and researchers from high-energy physics.

Book Particles Strings And Cosmology Pascos 99 Procs Of 7th Intl Symp

Download or read book Particles Strings And Cosmology Pascos 99 Procs Of 7th Intl Symp written by Kingman Cheung and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000-08-30 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The PASCOS (International Symposium on Particles, Strings and Cosmology) series brings together the leading experts and most active young researchers in the closely related fields of elementary particle physics, string theory and cosmology/astrophysics. These areas of research have become increasingly intertwined in recent years, each having direct impact on the others. In particular, there has been a dramatic expansion of ideas from particle theory and string theory that have vast impact on cosmology, especially our picture of the early universe and its evolution. Correspondingly, the proliferation of data regarding the early universe, and its increasing precision, has begun to strongly constrain the theoretical models. Meanwhile, observations of neutrino oscillations and cosmic ray excesses, and limits on new physics from colliders and other particle experiments, as well as the resulting restrictions on theoretical and phenomenological modeling, are becoming ever stronger. During PASCOS99, it became clear that the long-awaited era of convergence of these fields is truly at hand. The proceedings of PASCOS 99 reflect the accelerating overlap and convergence of the fields of elementary particles physics, string theory and cosmology/astrophysics. Plenary reviews by leading figures in these fields provide perspectives on these interrelationships and up-to-the-minute summaries of recent progress in the various areas. Parallel talk summaries focus on many of the topics within each field of greatest current interest and activity. Both the plenary and parallel writeups are designed to be descriptive in nature and avoid being overly technical. As a result, the volume can serve as a useful reference for students and professionals in all three fields. Careful referencing allows further pursuit of a given topic. Overall, the proceedings are unique in that they not only bring together in a single volume comprehensive overview of the great progress being made in all three of these very exciting fields, but also provide a snapshot of how particles, strings and cosmology are increasingly impacting one another.

Book Non perturbative Particle Theory And Experimental Tests Proceedings Of The Johns Hopkins Workshop On Current P

Download or read book Non perturbative Particle Theory And Experimental Tests Proceedings Of The Johns Hopkins Workshop On Current P written by Otto Nachtmann and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-08-12 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twentieth Johns Hopkins Workshop on current problems in particle theory took place in Heidelberg. The topic of the workshop was chosen in view of the phantastic success enjoyed by the standard model of electroweak and strong interactions.Until today, no significant deviations from the predictions of the standard model have been observed. However, precision tests have been dominantly performed in the high-energy domain, where the QCD coupling constant is small enough to allow for a perturbative treatment of the strong interaction. It is therefore very important to consider also the low-energy region for which non-perturbative aspects of QCD come into play.
