The photoproduction data were taken over a photon energy range from 0.5 to 2.3 GeV, while the electroproduction data was obtained over a W range of 1.8--2.5 GeV/c[sup 2]. Preliminary acceptance-corrected center-of-mass angular distributions have been examined for both data sets.

Since then, the field of excited nucleons and hadron structure has developed enormously, and the scope has broadened. Most significantly, new experimental facilities have come into operation, allowing precise measurements of resonance couplings and transition form factors. The search for ?missing? quark model states and gluonic excitations in complex hadronic channels is now possible.On the theory side, new and promising developments have emerged: quark models with meson degrees of freedom, hybrid baryon models, and studies of baryons in the limit of many colors. For the first time, lattice QCD has been employed to calculate masses of excited nucleons. Nucleon resonances are now recognized as providing significant contributions to the nucleon spin sum rules, as well as the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn and Bjorken integrals, at finite momentum transfer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jefferson Lab kaon experiments E91016/E93018 produced data on both strangeness and vector meson electroproduction. The latter part of the experiments was focused on the electroproduction of the omega meson for momentum transfer Q 2 near 0.5 (GeV/c) 2. This reaction was selected from the inelastic ep channel, H-1 (e, e' p)X, by performing involved signal background separation. Tagging the omega meson production only on electron and proton not only introduced appreciable statistical error but also a sizeable systematic uncertainty due to the background removal. Nevertheless, the analysis yielded angular distributions of the differential cross section in the threshold regime extracted with an unprecedented granularity and relatively small errors.

Book excerpt: Electromagnetic meson production is an important tool in the investigation of the structure of the nucleon. Consequently, a series of meson photo- and electroproduction experiments have been performed with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. In this overview I will report on measurements of cross sections, as well as recent and upcoming measurements of single- and double-polarization observables in meson photoproduction. The data will greatly constrain partial-wave analyses and reduce model-dependent uncertainties in the extraction of nucleon resonance properties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We discuss the recent data of exclusive $\pi^0$ (and $\pi^+$) electroproduction on the proton obtained by the CLAS collaboration at Jefferson Lab. It is observed that the cross sections, which have been decomposed in $\sigma_T+\epsilon\sigma_L$, $\sigma_{TT}$ and $\sigma_{LT}$ structure functions, are dominated by transverse amplitude contributions. The data can be interpreted in the Generalized Parton Distribution formalism provided that one includes helicity-flip transversity GPDs.
