Book excerpt: The aim of the current work is to study quark-hadron duality in meson electroproduction. While duality between inclusive electron-hadron scattering in the resonance and deep inelastic regimes (Bloom-Gilman or quark-baryon duality) is well established, the existence of a similar duality in meson electroproduction has not yet been tested. In the inclusive case, duality implies that singlequark scattering governs the scale of the reaction: the nucleon resonances act at low Q2 as one would expect from a scaling behavior. In the semi-inclusive case, the nucleon resonances may similarly affect a scaling behavior in the nal meson channel. On the other hand, it could be that (for example) the [Delta] resonance does not fall anomalously fast in semi-inclusive scattering, which would provide us with important clues about that phenomenon. New evidence for factorization of the cross section at low energy loss into two pieces - quark scattering and quark fragmentation - guides our approach to this measurement. This work addresses two issues, which are possibly related. Firstly, does the cross section still factorize at low energy loss, and can one reproduce the fragmentation functions determined from high energy scattering? Secondly, do the nucleon resonances average around these high energy fragmentation functions?

Book excerpt: This analysis studies the reaction ep → e'p'? in the kinematical range 1.6 ≤ Q2 ≤ 3.8 GeV2 and 2.0 ≤ W ≤ 3.0 GeV at CLAS. After successful signal identification, total and differential cross sections are measured and compared to the world data set. Comparisons are made to the predictions of the Jean-Mart Laget (JML) model based on Pomeron plus 2-gluon exchange. The overall scaling of the total cross section was determined to be 1/Q4.6+/-1.7 which is compatible within errors to the Vector Meson Dominance prediction of 1/ Q4 as well as to the expected behavior of a quark and gluon exchange-dominated model described by Generalized Parton Distributions of 1/Q6. The differential cross section d?/d? was used to determine that the s-channel helicity conservation (SCHC) assumption is valid within the precision of the current data. SCHC leads to a simple expression for the decay angular distribution from which R, the ratio of the longitudinal to the transverse cross section, can be extracted. Under the assumption of SCHC, we determine R = 1.33 ± 0.18 at an average Q2 of 2.21 GeV2 which leads to a determination of the longitudinal cross section sL = 5.3 ± 1.3 nb for exclusive ? production.

Book excerpt: We summarize the physics topics which can be addressed by measurements of high-Q^2 exclusive electroproduction of strange mesons, gamma* N -> phi N, K* Lambda, K Lambda, K Sigma, at Jefferson Lab with 11 GeV beam energy. The proposed investigations are aimed both at exploring the reaction mechanism (dominance of point-like configurations) and extracting information about baryon structure from the data (generalized parton distributions, or GPDs). They include (a) probing the t-dependence of the nucleon's gluon GPD (transverse spatial distribution of gluons) in phi meson production; (b) separating the nucleon helicity-flip and nonflip quark GPDs in K* Lambda production with measurement of the Lambda recoil polarization; (c) probing strangeness polarization in the nucleon in K Lambda and K Sigma production. These studies rely only on the analysis of cross section ratios, which are less affected by the theoretical uncertainties of present GPD-based calculations than absolute cross sect.

Book excerpt: The authors show that nuclear [sigma], [omega], and [pi] mesons can contribute coherently to enhance the electroproduction cross section on nuclei for longitudinal virtual photons at low Q2 while depleting the cross section for transverse photons. The authors are able to describe recent HERMES inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering data at low Q2 and small x using photon-meson and meson-nucleus couplings which are consistent with (but not determined by) existing constraints from meson decay widths, nuclear structure, deep inelastic scattering, and lepton pair production data. The authors find that while nuclear-coherent pion currents are not important for the present data, they could be observed at different kinematics. Their model for coherent meson electroproduction requires the assumption of mesonic currents and couplings which can be verified in separate experiments. The observation of nuclear-coherent mesons in the final state would verify their theory and allow the identification of a specific dynamical mechanism for higher-twist processes.

Book excerpt: The International Conference Mesons and Light Nuclei, organized by the Institute of Nuclear Physics (INP), Rez, was held during July 2 - 7, 1995 in small north Bohemian town Straz pod Ralskem. It was the sixth in a series of meetings which took place previously at Liblice 74 and 81, Bechyne 85 and 88, and Prague 91. The conferences gained already their firm position among intermediate energy nuclear physics activities. International nuclear physics community strongly supported our intention to continue the series. This year's venue for the conference was the accommodation and social area of the DIAMO company at Straz. The goal of the meeting was to summarize the present situation and the future perspectives concerning the experimental investigations and theoreti cal descriptions of light nuclei and their interactions with electromagnetic and hadronic probes, mainly at intermediate energies. The scientific program of the conference included the following areas of research: nuclear physics with pions and antiprotons, T)-meson physics, baryonic systems with strangeness, relativis tic few-body dynamics, and electroweak nuclear interaction. Representatives from many international groups working within different experimental facili ties and with different theoretical methods were invited and asked to present their latest results and future research programs. The Straz conference, attended by 102 physicist from institutions in 22 countries, was sponsored by the Austrian Ministry for Science and Research, Czech Ministry for Industry and Trade, and by SKODA PRAHA a.s. Thanks to this sponsorship we could also invite several participants and students at essentially reduced cost.
