Book Electrophysiology of the Central Nervous System

Download or read book Electrophysiology of the Central Nervous System written by V. S. Rusinov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important yet the most difficult scientific task confront ing man is how his brain produces his behavior and his subjective experience. The complexity of this problem is ineffably vast, ex ceeding by many orders of magnitude the theoretical and technical achievements concerning atomic energy or the exploration of space. Unlike these areas of endeavor, neuroscience is fortunate in knowing no national rivalries, and its only secrecies are those of language. The latter, however, are often highly effective in con cealing from workers in Los Angeles the discoveries of their co- leagues in Moscow. A cogent example is provided in this volume by Roy John (p. 179) whose experiments proceeded for several years before he discovered the important body of data accumulated earlier by Prof. Livanov and his colleagues utilizing the same ingenious technique of the "tracer stimulus." Reduction of such occurrences is certainly one of the goals of the present book, which now becomes a double translation, a dozen of the papers having originally been translated into Russian.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes an electrophysiological investigation of foci of excitation in the central nervous system of animals and man, foci which become dominant in character. The dominant focus, or dominant as it is usually called by Russian physiologists, is one of the fundamental processes under lying the activity of the central nervous system. The discovery of the mechanisms of formation of dominant foci is important for a deeper understanding of the activity of the human and animal brain and for identifying the pathophysiological mechanisms in lesions of the nervous system. The book summarizes the results of many years of investiga tion, both experimental and clinical, into the nature and properties of foci of excitation arising at different levels of the central ner vous system. A brief survey of the literature on Ukhtomskii's theory of the dominant is given in Chapter I and the present state of this theory is reviewed. The other chapters of the book deal with the results of research in the field of dominant foci undertaken in the author's laboratory. The experimental data relating to changes in the level of the steady cortical potential during the formation of the dominant focus and conditioned reflex are examined. The results obtained by polarization of the cortex with a weak direct current in order to form a dominant focus, and also by polarization of the reticular system of the brain stem and speCific and nonspecific nuclei of the thalamus and hypothalamus are given.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clinical Neurophysiology, Third Edition will continue the tradition of the previous two volumes by providing a didactic, yet accessible, presentation of electrophysiology in three sections that is of use to both the clinician and the researcher. The first section describes the analysis of electrophysiological waveforms. Section two describes the various methods and techniques of electrophysiological testing. The third section, although short in appearance, has recommendations of symptom complexes and disease entities using electroencephalography, evoked potentials, and nerve conduction studies.

Book Nerves Muscles and Electricity An Introductory Manual of Electrophysiology

Download or read book Nerves Muscles and Electricity An Introductory Manual of Electrophysiology written by George Camougis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries man knew about the lightning of the sky (atmospheric or physical electricity) and the numbing effects from contact with powerful electric fishes (animal electricity). Then, after proper experimentation and a synthetic ration ale, it began to appear that physical and animal electricity were related in fundamental respects. This realization was made at the end of the eighteenth century, since when the pages of history have been replete with exciting dis coveries and developments in electricity and magnetism, electrochemistry, and electrophysiology. It is hoped that this manual will enable some students to relive some of that excitement. The author remembers vividly the excitement when, as an undergraduate, he saw his first action potential. This book is not intended for any particular group of students; it should prove to be of some value to students in secondary schools, colleges, and gradu ate schools. Based on personal experience, the author feels that many teachers will also find it of use. Nor is the manual intended solely as a laboratory manual for an introductory course in neurophysiology. Some of the experiments might be introduced into the formallaboratory schedule of general or animal physiology courses. Alternatively, the various experiments might provide the bases for the beginning of special projects lasting for a full semester or even longer.

Download or read book Somatosensory System written by Ainsley Iggo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 861 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The waterproof sensory sheet covering the mammalian body has a rich afferent innervation which provides an abundance of complex information for use by the central nervous system often in conjunction with information from receptors in the joints. This book is an attempt to provide a systematic account of the way in which this somatosensory system works. The properties of the peripheral receptors have been debated in scientific terms for about a century and the resolu tion of the conflict in favour of the existence of 'specific' receptors for mechanical, thermal and noxious stimuli is reported and discussed in the opening chapters of the book. An awareness of this specificity has forced a re-consideration of the ways in which the central nervous system de-codes the information which is showered upon it. Advances in knowledge of the fine structure of the central nervous system have raised functional questions about the operation and organisation of the sensory systems in the spinal cord and brain. Fresh insight into the morphological complexity of the dorsal horn and higher levels of the nervous system gives the physiologist a clearer idea of the units with which he works. Progress has been made in understanding the function of sensory relay nuclei in general and indivi dual tracts in particular and is fully decomented.

Book Basic Electrophysiological Methods

Download or read book Basic Electrophysiological Methods written by Ellen Covey and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-25 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic Electrophysiological Methods provides a concise and easy-to-read guide on a selection of the most important contemporary electrophysiological techniques, their implementation, applications, and ways in which they can be combined and integrated with neuroscientific techniques. Intended for students, postdocs, and faculty with a basic neuroscience background, this text will not obscure the relevant technical details with textbook neuroscience tutorials as many other books do. Instead, each chapter provides a conscientious overview of the underlying theory -- a comprehensive description of equipment, materials, methods, data management, and analysis -- a troubleshooting guide, and a list of frequently asked questions. No book or online resource can function as strictly a DIY set of instructions on how to implement a complex technique. However, this book provides a fundamental and accessible set of information intended to form a foundation prior to, during, and after hands-on experience and training, greatly facilitating the initial learning process and subsequent fine-tuning of technical details.
