Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's world, the range of technologies with the potential to threaten the security of U.S. military forces is extremely broad. These include developments in explosive materials, sensors, control systems, robotics, satellite systems, and computing power, to name just a few. Such technologies have not only enhanced the capabilities of U.S. military forces, but also offer enhanced offensive capabilities to potential adversaries - either directly through the development of more sophisticated weapons, or more indirectly through opportunities for interrupting the function of defensive U.S. military systems. Passive and active electro-optical (EO) sensing technologies are prime examples. Laser Radar considers the potential of active EO technologies to create surprise; i.e., systems that use a source of visible or infrared light to interrogate a target in combination with sensitive detectors and processors to analyze the returned light. The addition of an interrogating light source to the system adds rich new phenomenologies that enable new capabilities to be explored. This report evaluates the fundamental, physical limits to active EO sensor technologies with potential military utility; identifies key technologies that may help overcome the impediments within a 5-10 year timeframe; considers the pros and cons of implementing each existing or emerging technology; and evaluates the potential uses of active EO sensing technologies, including 3D mapping and multi-discriminate laser radar technologies.

Book Phosphor Type Photoconductive Coatings for Continuous Tone Electro Optical Photography

Download or read book Phosphor Type Photoconductive Coatings for Continuous Tone Electro Optical Photography written by Eugene Wainer and published by . This book was released on 1951 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrophotography is a pictorial process whereby images are obtained through the medium of supplying a photoconductive surface with electrons in the dark and discharging this photoconductive surface preferentially on exposure to light. The image is fixed by dusting the surface of such a plate with electrostatically charged particles which attach themselves preferentially to the surface depending on the nature of the charges remaining on the plate, and then removing the powder in image form either by electrostatics or by offset means. It has been found that electro-optical photographs can be made using commercially available phosphors as the sensitive surface. Phosphors most suitable for the application are the sulfide family, primarily of the zinc, cadmium, sulfide types. The chief drawback to the use of phosphors of these chemical families for the photoconductive sensitive surface is that the photographic speed obtained through use of such materials is extremely low, being of the order of 1 A.S.A. or less. Deductive investigation has indicated that a phosphor-like material composed substantially of properly treated cadmium sulfide will exhibit speeds markedly greater than that of the zinc-sulfide types.

Book Electro optical System Analysis and Design

Download or read book Electro optical System Analysis and Design written by Cornelius J. Willers and published by SPIE-International Society for Optical Engineering. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of radiometry can be dangerous territory to the uninitiated, faced with the risk of errors and pitfalls. The concepts and tools explored in this book empower readers to comprehensively analyse, design, and optimise real-world systems. This book builds on the foundation of solid theoretical understanding, and strives to provide insight into hidden subtleties in radiometric analysis. Atmospheric effects provide opportunity for a particularly rich set of intriguing observations. The term 'radiometry' is used in its wider context to specifically cover the calculation of flux. This wider definition is commonly used by practitioners in the field to cover all forms of manipulation, including creation, measurement, calculation, modeling, and simulation of optical flux. Two concurrent themes frame the discussion: fragmenting a complex problem into simple building blocks and then designing complex systems from smaller elements. Analysis and design, as a creative synthesis of something new, cannot be easily taught other than by example; for this purpose, several case studies are presented. This book also provides a number of problems, some with solutions demonstrated in Matlab(R) and the Python' pyradi toolkit.

Book Photoelastic and Electro Optic Properties of Crystals

Download or read book Photoelastic and Electro Optic Properties of Crystals written by T. S. Narasimhamurty and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive treatise reviews, for the first time, all the essential work over the past 160 years on the photoelastic and the closely related linear and quadratic electro-optic effects in isotropic and crystalline mate rials. Emphasis is placed on the phenomenal growth of the subject during the past decade and a half with the advent of the laser, with the use of high-frequency acousto-optic and electro-optic techniques, and with the discovery of new piezoelectric materials, all of which have offered a feedback to the wide interest in these two areas of solid-state physics. The first of these subjects, the photoelastic effect, was discovered by Sir David Brewster in 1815. He first found the effect in gels and subsequently found it in glasses and crystals. While the effect remained of academic interest for nearly a hundred years, it became of practical value when Coker and Filon applied it to measuring stresses in machine parts. With one photograph and subsequent analysis, the stress in any planar model can be determined. By taking sections of a three-dimensional model, complete three-dimensional stresses can be found. Hence this effect is widely applied in industry.
