Book Numerical Determination of the Electronic Structure of Atoms Diatomic and Polyatomic Molecules

Download or read book Numerical Determination of the Electronic Structure of Atoms Diatomic and Polyatomic Molecules written by M. Defranceschi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum mechanical calculations in physics, chemistry and biology are widely recognized as useful interpretative and predictive tools. Unfortunately, they are plagued by unfavorable convergence limitations due to the use of finite linear combinations of basis functions. With the current computer technologies, there is a possible way out to the situation by solving numerically the corresponding wave equations. The present interest and need for numerical determination of electronic structure of atoms, diatomic and poly atomic molecules led us to organize a NATO-ARW devoted to these questions. The aim of the meeting was to provide a review of the state of the art about techniques and applications. The organizing committee consisted of Drs. G. Berthier, P. Claverie, M. Defranceschi, J. Delhalle, H.J. Monkhorst and P. Pyykk6. It was a great sorrow for us to be informed in January 88 of the death of Professor P. Claverie who supported so enthusiastically the idea of having such a meeting organized. The NATO Advanced Research Worshop on : " Numerical Determination of the Electronic Structure of Atoms, Diatomic and Poly atomic Molecules" was held at Versailles (France) from April 17th till April 22th, 1988.

Book Electronic Structure And Chemical Bonding

Download or read book Electronic Structure And Chemical Bonding written by Dunod Editeur and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996-09-20 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the problem of teaching the Electronic Structure and Chemical Bonding of atoms and molecules to high school and university students. Book excerpt: Atoms and Molecules describes the basic properties of atoms and molecules in terms of group theoretical methods in atomic and molecular physics. The book reviews mathematical concepts related to angular momentum properties, finite and continuous rotation groups, tensor operators, the Wigner-Eckart theorem, vector fields, and vector spherical harmonics. The text also explains quantum mechanics, including symmetry considerations, second quantization, density matrices, time-dependent, and time-independent approximation methods. The book explains atomic structure, particularly the Dirac equation in which its nonrelativistic approximation provides the basis for the derivation of the Hamiltonians for all important interactions, such as spin-orbit, external fields, hyperfine. Along with multielectron atoms, the text discusses multiplet theory, the Hartree-Fock formulation, as well as the electromagnetic radiation fields, their interactions with atoms in first and higher orders. The book explores molecules and complexes, including the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, molecular orbitals, the self-consistent field method, electronic states, vibrational and rotational states, molecular spectra, and the ligand field theory. The book can prove useful for graduate or advanced students and academicians in the field of general and applied physics.

Book Perspectives in Electronic Structure Theory

Download or read book Perspectives in Electronic Structure Theory written by Roman F. Nalewajski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-26 with total page 727 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The understanding in science implies insights from several different points of view. Alternative modern outlooks on electronic structure of atoms and molecules, all rooted in quantum mechanics, are presented in a single text. Together these complementary perspectives provide a deeper understanding of the localization of electrons and bonds, the origins of chemical interaction and reactivity behavior, the interaction between the geometric and electronic structure of molecules, etc. In the opening two parts the basic principles and techniques of the contemporary computational and conceptual quantum chemistry are presented, within both the wave-function and electron-density theories. This background material is followed by a discussion of chemical concepts, including stages of the bond-formation processes, chemical valence and bond-multiplicity indices, the hardness/softness descriptors of molecules and reactants, and general chemical reactivity/stability principles. The insights from Information Theory, the basic elements of which are briefly introduced, including the entropic origins and Orbital Communication Theory of the chemical bond, are the subject of Part IV. The importance of the non-additive (interference) information tools in exploring patterns of chemical bonds and their covalent and ionic components will be emphasized.

Book Structure and Dynamics of Atoms and Molecules

Download or read book Structure and Dynamics of Atoms and Molecules written by Jean-Louis Calais and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A companion volume to Conceptual Trends in Quantum Chemistry, this work contains eight contributions focusing on important conceptual trends in atomic and molecular theory. The polarization between ab initio and semi-empirical methods is thoroughly analyzed in two of the articles, which also provide bridges between such procedures. Hydrogen-transfer theory and electron delocalization are treated in two further papers. Explicitly time-dependent descriptions of intermolecular dynamics, which constitute a characteristic trend in current research, are represented by an article about the quantum dynamics of diatoms in external fields. A view of certain atomic excited states is presented in a paper on collective and independent particle character, and a new theoretical tool is surveyed in an article on dimensional scaling. The final article analyzes density functional theory.
