Book Electron Wave Instabilities in a Magnetoplasma Caused by Electron neutral Collisions

Download or read book Electron Wave Instabilities in a Magnetoplasma Caused by Electron neutral Collisions written by John Q. Howell and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new class of collision-dependent electron waves is found in a non-Maxwellian Lorentz magnetoplasma, and it is shown that electron-neutral collisions may cause these waves to become unstable. The Boltzmann equation with collision integral is solved while assuming propagation to be either parallel or perpendicular to the magnetic field. Both conductivity tensors are derived and put in a form that is useful for numerical calculations. The full set of Maxwell's equations is then used to derive the dispersion relations for both directions of propagation. The dispersion relations are initially solved for a monoenergetic electron distribution function and then an isotropic distribution with a peak of nonzero half-width is treated. Some consideration is also given to an isotropic Maxwellian distribution both with and without a bump on the tail. As an example of propagation parallel to the magnetic field, transverse electromagnetic or "whistler" waves in a nitrogen plasma are considered. A new collisional mode is found with real frequency near the electron cyclotron frequency, and under appropriate conditions it may be either convectively or absolutely unstable. Longitudinal or electrostatic waves propagating perpendicular to the magnetic field in a nitrogen plasma are also considered. A series of new collisional modes with real frequency near the electron cyclotron frequency and its harmonics are shown to be unstable under some conditions. For both directions of propagation, the electron waves can be unstable if a large fraction of plasma electrons have their velocity in a region where the electron-neutral collision frequency increases (or decreases) rapidly enough. The requirement on the electron-neutral collision frequency is easily met by nitrogen, mercury, and the Ramsauer gases.

Book Dust Plasma Interaction in Space

Download or read book Dust Plasma Interaction in Space written by P. K. Shukla and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dust is ubiquitous in the universe and responsible for stellar and planetary formation. Virtually all previous studies have considered the dust particulates to be a charge neutral component. Satellite missions such as Voyager revealed the extent to which charged dust plays a role in astrophysics. In most areas dust exists in the presence of a dilute plasma. In such a plasma environment the dust becomes charged to a variety of processes (eg photo-ionisation, collisions with electrons and ions, thermionic emission etc). Closer to home in the Earth's mesosphere, rocket measurements and radar observations conclusively demonstrate the importance of charged dust in forming complex structures responsible for Polar Mesospheric Summer Echoes. This book is the outcome of a periodic collaboration between a small group of scientists meeting twice a year at the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) in Bern, Switzerland over a period of three years. The book begins with a description of the fundamental physical processes which characterise dusty plasmas. Starting with charging and shielding of isolated dust particles in a plasma environment, the review progresses to non-linear dust dynamics of spherical and irregular dust. In an ensemble of a dust plasma system collective processes begin to manifest themselves in the form of new wave modes and instabilities which play an important role in the collective behaviour displayed in space and astrophysical environment. Finally more exotic topics, such as the Ising model for irregular dust grain alignment, classical Casimir forces and chargeons are explored.
