Book Electron Microscopy of Interfaces in Metals and Alloys

Download or read book Electron Microscopy of Interfaces in Metals and Alloys written by L.M Clarebrough and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-02 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron Microscopy of Interfaces in Metals and Alloys examines the structure of interfaces in metals and alloys using transmission electron microscopy. The book presents quantitative methods of analysis and reviews the most significant work on interface structure over the last 20 years. It provides the first book description of the methods used for quantitative identification of Burgers vectors of interfacial dislocations, including the geometric analysis of periodicities in interface structure and the comparison of experimental and theoretical electron micrographs. The book explores low- and high-angle grain boundaries and interphase interfaces between neighboring grains, emphasizing interfacial dislocations and rigid-body displacements to the structure and properties of interfaces. It also analyzes the use of two-beam images and diffraction patterns for analysis and studies n-beam lattice imaging. The book includes numerous worked examples of the analysis of the structure of grain boundaries and interphase interfaces, which are particularly useful to those who need to consider the nature of intercrystalline interfaces.

Book Surface and Interface Characterization by Electron Optical Methods

Download or read book Surface and Interface Characterization by Electron Optical Methods written by Ugo Valdre and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of real space imaging and spatially-resolved spectroscopy in many of the most significant problems of surface and interface behaviour is almost self evident. To join the expertise of the tradi tional surface scientist with that of the electron microscopist has however been a slow and difficult process. In the past few years remarkable progress has been achieved, including the development of new techniques of scanning transmission and reflection imaging as well as low energy microscopy, all carried out in greatly improved vacuum conditions. Most astonishing of all has been the advent of the scanning tunneling electron microscope providing atomic resolution in a manner readily compatible with most surface science diagnostic procedures. The problem of beam damage, though often serious, is increasingly well understood so that we can assess the reliability and usefulness of the results which can now be obtained in catalysis studies and a wide range of surface science applications. These new developments and many others in more established surface techniques are all described in this book, based on lectures given at a NATO Advanced Study Institute held in Erice, Sicily, at Easter 1987. It is regretted that a few lectures on low energy electron diffraction and channeling effects could not be included. Fifteen lecturers from seven different Countries and 67 students from 23 Countries and a wide variety of backgrounds attended the school.

Book Metal Ceramic Interfaces

Download or read book Metal Ceramic Interfaces written by M. Rühle and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As engineering materials and structures often contain a metal or metallic alloy bonded to a ceramic, the resultant interface must be able to sustain mechanical forces without failure. They also play an important role in oxidation or reduction of materials. The workshop on 'Bonding, Structure and Mechanical Properties of Metal/Ceramic Interfaces' was held in January 1989 within the Acta/Scripta Metallurgica conference series. It drew together an international collection of 70 scientists who discussed a wide range of issues related to metal-ceramic interfaces. The sessions were divided into 7 categories: structure and bonding, chemistry at interfaces, formation of interfaces, structure of interfaces, thermodynamics/atomistics of interface fracture, mechanics of interface cracks, and fracture resistance of bimaterial interfaces. Within these headings attention was paid to grain boundaries, the influence of chemical processes on the behaviour of interfaces, diffusion bonding, characterization of fracture, and crack propagation by fatigue and by stress corrosion. The book presents a useful reference source for materials scientists, physicists, chemists, and mechanical engineers who are concerned with the roles and properties of interfaces.

Book Analytical Transmission Electron Microscopy Studies on Copper Alumina Interfaces

Download or read book Analytical Transmission Electron Microscopy Studies on Copper Alumina Interfaces written by Richard Y. Hashimoto and published by . This book was released on 1999-06-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A diffusion bonded copper-alumina interface had been studied using energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Investigations of polycrystalline alumina showed that silica, a common commercial impurity, was present at the triple junctions in the form of fine mullite crystals in a glassy, silicon rich phase. Silicon was also detected along the alumina grain boundaries near triple junctions. There was no observed diffusion of Cu into alumina or alumina into copper. TEM results indicated no interface phase in the these vacuum formed samples. EDX studies of the interfaces revealed that silicon was present in varying concentrations from 1.O at.% to 10.0 at.%. Using spatial difference, PEELS at the interface showed two distinct residuals: a coordination similar to an aluminosilicate for silicon rich areas and a coordination similar to a metal to metal coordination for low silicon regions. Comparison of the Si rich interface residual PEELS spectra to that of the alumina triple junction PEELS spectra showed that the interface had atomic environments similar to that of as aluminosilicate, such as mullite. The interface results suggest that Si segregation may contribute to the observed higher strength of the metal-ceramic composite by void filling and modified bond character.
