Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is perhaps surprising that a process which was one of the first to be studied on an atomic scale, and a process which first received attention over seven decades ago, continues to be the object of diverse and intense research efforts. Such is the case with the (seemingly) conceptually simple and familiar mechanism of electron impact ionization of atoms, molecules, and ions. Not only has the multi-body nature of the collision given ground to theoretical effort only grudgingly, but also the variety and subtlety of processes contributing to ionization have helped insure that progress has come only with commensurate work: no pain - no gain. Modern experimental methods have made it possible to effectively measure and explore threshold laws, differential cross sections, partial cross sections, inner-shell ionization, and the ionization of unstable species such as radicals and ions. In most instances the availability of experimental data has provided impetus and guidance for further theoretical progress.

Book Electron Impact Ionization of Atoms and Ions

Download or read book Electron Impact Ionization of Atoms and Ions written by Ghanshyam Purohit and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-05 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents details of electron impact single ionization of atoms and ions. The ionization of atoms and molecules by photon or charged particle impact such as electrons is of great importance in physics. Over the past several years a great progress has been made to understand the physics of electron impact single ionization processes (i.e. (e, 2e) processes) on atoms and ions and its quantum mechanically complete studies have also been performed. Theoretical investigations of (e, 2e) processes on atoms provide a platform to understand the collision dynamics and the characteristics of the targets by studying triple differential cross section (TDCS). Study of TDCS using the (e, 2e) technique is an important method to probe the dynamics of the ionization process and such data are strongly needed in the fields of astrophysics, controlled nuclear fusion, plasma physics etc. Chapter 1 of this book gives introduction of the electron impact ionization and the details of research work done so far has been described. The theoretical formalism has been described in detail in Chapter 2. Results of TDCS for various atomic and ionic targets have been presented in Chapter 3 and 4.

Book Analysis of Excitation and Ionization of Atoms and Molecules by Electron Impact

Download or read book Analysis of Excitation and Ionization of Atoms and Molecules by Electron Impact written by Afzal Chaudhry and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-17 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The content of this book describes in detail the results of the present measurements of the partial and total doubly differential cross sections for the multiple-ionization of rare gas atoms by electron impact. These measurements show, beside other trends, the role of Auger transitions in the production of multiply ionized atoms in the region where the incident electron energy is sufficient to produce inner shell ionization. Other processes like Coster-Kronig transitions and shake off also contribute towards increasing the charge of the ions. The incident electron having energy of 6 keV, for example, in a collision with xenon atom can remove up to nine electrons! (*) X-ray-ion coincidence spectroscopy of the electron xenon atom collisions is also described. The present measurements of doubly differential cross sections for the dissociative and non-dissociative ionization of hydrogen, sulfur dioxide and sulfur hexa fluoride molecular gases by electron impact are also described in the text of this book. The results of the measurements for sulfur dioxide molecule show how this major atmospheric pollutant can be removed from the atmosphere by electron impact dissociation of this molecule. The present results of the measurements for sulfur hexa fluoride give an insight into the dissociation properties of this molecular gas, which is being so widely used as a gaseous insulator in the electrical circuits. The book also describes the present measurements of the polarization parameters of the fluorescence radiation emitted by the electron-impact-excited atoms of sodium and potassium. In these investigations the target atoms are polarized, therefore, the measurements of the polarization parameters give information about the electron atom interaction in terms of the interference, direct and exchange interaction channels.

Book Electron Impact Phenomena

Download or read book Electron Impact Phenomena written by F. H. Field and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron Impact Phenomena and the Properties of Gaseous Ions, Revised Edition deals with data pertaining to electron impact and to molecular gaseous ionic phenomena. This book discusses electron impact phenomena in gases at low pressure that involve low-energy electrons, which result in ion formation. The text also describes the use of mass spectrometers in electron impact studies and the degree of accuracy obtained when measuring electron impact energies. This book also reviews relatively low speed electrons and the transitions that result in the ionization of the atomic system. This text then discusses diatomic molecules whose mass spectra can be interpreted using the Franck-Condon principle. This selection also presents some examples of ions in solution that resemble the gaseous ions formed by electron impacts. The energies of these gaseous ions can be the key to understanding the mechanisms of ionic reactions. These examples include the olefin addition reactions and catalytic cracking. This text will prove invaluable for research chemists, students, and professors in chemistry and related fields such as organic chemistry and electrochemistry.

Book Atomic Processes in Electron Ion and Ion Ion Collisions

Download or read book Atomic Processes in Electron Ion and Ion Ion Collisions written by F. Brouillard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four years after a first meeting in BADDECK, Canada, on the Physics of Ion-Ion and Electron-Ion collisions, a second Nato Advanced Study Institute, in HAl~/Lesse, Belgium, reexamined the subject which had become almost a new one, in consideration of the many important developments that had occured in the mean time. The developments have been particularly impressive in two areas : the di-electronic recombination of electrons with ions and the collisional processes of mUltiply charged ions. For dielectronic recombination, a major event was the obtainment, in 1983, of the first experimental data. This provided, at last, a non speculative basis for the study of that intricate and subtle process and strongly stimulated the theoretical activities. Multiply charged ions, on the other hand, have become popular, thanks to the development of powerful ion sources. This circumstance, together with a pressing demand from thermonuclear research for ionisation and charge exchange cross sections, has triggered systematic experimental investigations and new theoretical studies, which have contributed to considerably enlarge, over the last five years, our understanding of the collisional processes of multiply charged ions. Dielectronic recombination and multiply charged ions were therefore central points in the programme of the A.S.I. in HAN/Lesse and are given a corresponding emphasis in the present book.

Book The Theory of Atomic Structure and Spectra

Download or read book The Theory of Atomic Structure and Spectra written by Robert D. Cowan and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-15 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both the interpretation of atomic spectra and the application of atomic spectroscopy to current problems in astrophysics, laser physics, and thermonuclear plasmas require a thorough knowledge of the Slater-Condon theory of atomic structure and spectra. This book gathers together aspects of the theory that are widely scattered in the literature and augments them to produce a coherent set of closed-form equations suitable both for computer calculations on cases of arbitrary complexity and for hand calculations for very simple cases.

Physical properties and scaling laws of the total ionization cross-sections are studied on the basis of available experimental data and theoretical approaches. Analytical formulae and fitting parameters for the ionization cross-sections and Maxwellian rate coefficients are given and these can be used for different physical applications. The role of electron-ionization in ion-atom collisions, which is of improtance in problems of accelerator physics, is also considered. Multiple ionization of atoms and ions by electron impact are studies in terms of the number of ejected electrons, the total number of the target electrons and threshold ionization energy.
