Book Electron Impact Excitation Cross Sections of Xenon for Optical Plasma Diagnostic

Download or read book Electron Impact Excitation Cross Sections of Xenon for Optical Plasma Diagnostic written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this project the researcher had taken up the calculation of xenon apparent emission-excitation cross sections for emission lines that have diagnostic value in the analysis of Xe-propelled electric thruster plasmas. Following conclusions were made from the study: The RDW method has been shown to be applicable to transitions between excited states. Since the excitation energy of these transitions is relatively small, first-order theories are valid at lower energies than for excitations from the ground states. The accuracy of the cross section depends crucially on the accuracy of the oscillator strengths obtained from the target wave functions. The use of a relativistic formalism "j-j coupling" clearly explains the huge variation in the magnitudes of these cross sections. The objectives of the project have been achieved and the aimed metastable excitation cross section results of xenon were obtained that are required for the CRM model of Dressler and co-workers and these are being tested and new plasma modeling results are under calculation.

The major focus areas include quantum collisions, spectroscopy of atomic and molecular clusters, photoionization, Wigner time delay in collisions, laser cooling, Bose-Einstein condensates, atomic clocks, quantum computing, and trapping and manipulation of quantum systems. The book also discusses emerging topics such as ultrafast quantum processes including those at the attosecond time-scale. This book will prove to be a valuable reference for students and researchers working in the field of atomic and molecular physics.

Book Ion Collision Emission Excitation Cross Sections for Xenon Electric Thruster Plasmas

Download or read book Ion Collision Emission Excitation Cross Sections for Xenon Electric Thruster Plasmas written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energetic xenon ion collisions with neutral atoms play an important role in electric thruster plasma radiation at low electron temperatures. The respective emission excitation cross sections are necessary for the derivation of plasma parameters from the observed radiance. We present apparent emission excitation cross sections for near-infrared 5p(exp 5)6p to 5p(exp 5)6s transitions of neutral xenon impacted by singly and doubly charged xenon ions. The cross sections were measured over a laboratory energy-per-charge-number range of 100 to 900 eV, a range that covers typical Hall effect thruster discharge voltages. The cross sections are derived from ion beam luminescence spectra produced at single-collision conditions and at pressures for which radiation trapping effects were shown to be negligible. The Xe(exp 2+) cross sections are significantly higher than those of Xe2+ and increase with energy throughout the investigated range. The Xe(exp 2+) cross sections plateau at approximately 600 eV. The cross sections are incorporated in a collisional-radiative model. The calculations of near-infrared spectra demonstrate that the sensitivity of the model diagnostic with respect to electron temperature increases with ion energy.

Book Advances in Atomic Molecular and Optical Physics

Download or read book Advances in Atomic Molecular and Optical Physics written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-12-13 with total page 749 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 54 of the Advances in Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics Series contains ten contributions, covering a diversity of subject areas in atomic, molecular and optical physics. The article by Regal and Jin reviews the properties of a Fermi degenerate gas of cold potassium atoms in the crossover regime between the Bose-Einstein condensation of molecules and the condensation of fermionic atom pairs. The transition between the two regions can be probed by varying an external magnetic field. Sherson, Julsgaard and Polzik explore the manner in which light and atoms can be entangled, with applications to quantum information processing and communication. They report on the result of recent experiments involving the entanglement of distant objects and quantum memory of light. Recent developments in cold Rydberg atom physics are reviewed in the article by Choi, Kaufmann, Cubel-Liebisch, Reinhard, and Raithel. Fascinating experiments are described in which cold, highly excited atoms (“Rydberg atoms) and cold plasmas are generated. Evidence for a collective excitation of Rydberg matter is also presented. Griffiin and Pindzola offer an account of non-perturbative quantal methods for electron-atom scattering processes. Included in the discussion are the R-matrix with pseudo-states method and the time-dependent close-coupling method. An extensive review of the R-matrix theory of atomic, molecular, and optical processes is given by Burke, Noble, and Burke. They present a systematic development of the R-matrix method and its applications to various processes such as electron-atom scattering, atomic photoionization, electron-molecule scattering, positron-atom scattering, and atomic/molecular multiphoton processes. Electron impact excitation of rare-gas atoms from both their ground and metastable states is discussed in the article by Boffard, Jung, Anderson, and Lin. Excitation cross sections measured by the optical method are reviewed with emphasis on the physical interpretation in terms of electronic structure of the target atoms. Ozier and Moazzen-Ahmadi explore internal rotation of symmetric top molecules. Developments of new experimental methods based on high-resolution torsional, vibrational, and molecular beam spectroscopy allow accurate determination of internal barriers for these symmetric molecules. The subject of attosecond and angstrom science is reviewed by Niikura and Corkum. The underlying physical mechanisms allowing one to generate attosecond radiation pulses are described and the technology needed for the preparation of such pulses is discussed. LeGouët, Bretenaker, and Lorgeré describe how rare earth ions embedded in crystals can be used for processing optically carried broadband radio-frequency signals. Methods for reaching tens of gigahertz instantaneous bandwidth with submegahertz resolution using such devices are analyzed in detail and demonstrated experimentally. Finally, in the article by Illing, Gauthier, and Roy, it is shown that small perturbations applied to optical systems can be used to suppress or control optical chaos, spatio-temporal dynamics, and patterns. Applications of these techniques to communications, laser stabilization, and improving the sensitivity of low-light optical switches are explored. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron scattering, a subset of atomic molecular physics, plays a key role in many areas of science and technology. It can be used as probes in a wide range of natural processes. This book reports electron impact collision calculations on atomic and molecular targets relevant to plasma and astrophysical systems. It covers theoretical research in these areas on the electron collision and ionization of various atomic and molecular targets in the lower and intermediate energies. We report a simple and effective method developed by our group, which provides an estimate for family of cross sections: total elastic cross sections, total inelastic cross sections, total cross section, rotational cross sections and grand total cross sections for electron scattering from atoms and molecules. The results of such calculations are compared with experiments and with other calculations. Apart from these calculations, the present book also investigates theoretical work on a molecule BF at low energies using R-matrix formulation in the Quantemol-N software. These calculations can be useful to both the experimentalists as well as theoretians in their research work.
