Book Theoretical Treatment of Electron Emission and Related Phenomena

Download or read book Theoretical Treatment of Electron Emission and Related Phenomena written by Benjamin Seznec and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-14 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces readers to the physics governing electron emission under high voltages and temperatures, and highlights recent modeling and numerical developments for describing these phenomena. It begins with a brief introduction, presenting several applications that have driven electron emission research in the last few decades. The authors summarize the most relevant theories including the physics of thermo-field electron emission and the main characteristic parameters. Based on these theories, they subsequently describe numerical multi-physics models and discuss the main findings on the effect of space charges, emitter geometry, pulse duration, etc. Beyond the well-known photoelectric effect, the book reviews recent advanced theories on photon-metal interaction. Distinct phenomena occur when picosecond and femtosecond lasers are used to irradiate a surface. Their consequences on metal electron dynamics and heating are presented and discussed, leading to various emission regimes – in and out of equilibrium. In closing, the book reviews the effects of electron emission on high-voltage operation in vacuum, especially breakdown and conditioning, as the most common examples. The book offers a uniquely valuable resource for graduate and PhD students whose work involves electron emission, high-voltage holding, laser irradiation of surfaces, vacuum or discharge breakdown, but also for academic researchers and professionals in the field of accelerators and solid state physics with an interest in this highly topical area.

Book Cluster Models for Surface and Bulk Phenomena

Download or read book Cluster Models for Surface and Bulk Phenomena written by Gianfranco Pacchioni and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely recognized that an understanding of the physical and chemical properties of clusters will give a great deal of important information relevant to surface and bulk properties of condensed matter. This relevance of clusters for condensed matter is one of the major motivations for the study of atomic and molecular clusters. The changes of properties with cluster size, from small clusters containing only a few atoms to large clusters containing tens of thousands of atoms, provides a unique way to understand and to control the development of bulk properties as separated units are brought together to form an extended system. Another important use of clusters is as theoretical models of surfaces and bulk materials. The electronic wavefunctions for these cluster models have special advantages for understanding, in particular, the local properties of condensed matter. The cluster wavefunctions, obtained with molecular orbital theory, make it possible to relate chemical concepts developed to describe chemical bonds in molecules to the very closely related chemical bonding at the surface and in the bulk of condensed matter. The applications of clusters to phenomena in condensed matter is a cross-disciplinary activity which requires the interaction and collaboration of researchers in traditionally separate areas. For example, it is necessary to bring together workers whose background and expertise is molecular chemistry with those whose background is solid state physics. It is also necessary to bring together experimentalists and theoreticians.

Book Laser Interaction and Related Plasma Phenomena

Download or read book Laser Interaction and Related Plasma Phenomena written by Heinrich Hora and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 6th International Workshop in the series starting in 1969 was held at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California from 25-29 October, 1982 under the continuing directorship of Heinrich Hora. The co-directorship of the late Helmut Schwarz who helped found the series was assumed by George Miley. Fred Schwirzke served as the local organizer. Following a commemoration for Helmut Schwarz, Heinrich Hora connnented that the long title of the workshop is originally due to Nicholas Bloembergen, who prophetically envisaged that "related plasma phenomena" such as is involved in particle beam fusion is also of enormous interest to the laser connnunity. The en thusiastic response of the workshop advisors and the 82 participants from 11 countries supports the need for a continuation of this work shop-type meeting where an innnediate discussion and documentation of new results and conceptual formulations occurs, a process not possible through the usual journals. The main sponsor of this year's confer ence was the Fusion Studies Laboratory of the University of Illinois. Thanks are also due to the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, and the Department of Theoretical Physics, University of New South Wales. The conference was made feasible by the contributions of the partici pants, and they and their institutions deserve many thanks. Special recognition is due to the Conference Secretary, Chris Stalker (Urbana), as well as to Marie Wesson (Sydney) and to Patricia Vardaro (Monterey).

  • Author : Steven S. Zumdahl
  • Publisher : Cengage Learning
  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN : 9780840065865
  • Pages : 1128 pages

Download or read book Chemistry written by Steven S. Zumdahl and published by Cengage Learning. This book was released on 2012 with total page 1128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steve and Susan Zumdahl's texts focus on helping students build critical thinking skills through the process of becoming independent problem-solvers. They help students learn to "think like a chemists" so they can apply the problem solving process to all aspects of their lives. In CHEMISTRY: AN ATOMS FIRST APPROACH, 1e, International Edition the Zumdahls use a meaningful approach that begins with the atom and proceeds through the concept of molecules, structure, and bonding, to more complex materials and their properties. Because this approach differs from what most students have experienced in high school courses, it encourages them to focus on conceptual learning early in the course, rather than relying on memorization and a "plug and chug" method of problem solving that even the best students can fall back on when confronted with familiar material. The atoms first organization provides an opportunity for students to use the tools of critical thinkers: to ask questions, to apply rules and models and to
