Book Electronic Conduction in Oxides

Download or read book Electronic Conduction in Oxides written by Nobuo Tsuda and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a revised and up-dated translation of Denki DendOsei Sankabutsu (Electronic Conduction in Oxides) published by Shokabo in Tokyo in 1983 as the second volume of the Material Science Series, which was edited for postgraduate students by T. Suzuki, S. Chikazumi, and S. Nakajima. Since the publication of the first edition, we have witnessed the historic discovery of high-Tc superconductors by J. G. Bednorz and K. A. Müller. Tbe Shokabo edition has thus been thoroughly revised to accommodate the recent developments, and K. Nasu joined as the fourth author. The constitution of the book is as follows: After a short introductory chapter, Chap. 2 is devoted 10 a brief review of transport phenomena and electronic states in oxides. It was written by Tsuda. In Chap. 3, the electron-phonon and electron electron interaction are treated theoretically by Nasu and Yanase. Nasu discusses the present status of theoretical studies of the electron-phonon interaction in solids and Yanase explains the electron correlation. Chapter 4 treats the physics ofvarious representative oxides in detail. Sections 4. 1-5 and 4. 10 were written by Tsuda and Sects. 4. 6-9 by Siratori. This chapter is intended not as an exhaustive review of the properties of each oxide, but rather as an illustration of the concepts which have developed out of the research into transport phenomena in conductive oxides. Many of these concepts are due 10 N. F. Mott. At the end of Chap.

Book Electron Molecule Interactions and Their Applications

Download or read book Electron Molecule Interactions and Their Applications written by L Christophorou and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron-Molecule Interactions and Their Applications, Volume 1 presents a comprehensive account of electron-molecule interactions in high- and ultra-high-pressure gases and liquids. Topics covered include elastic scattering of electrons by molecules; excitation, ionization, and dissociation of molecules by electron impact; electron-molecule resonances; and electron attachment and detachment processes. This volume is comprised of seven chapters and begins with a discussion on non-resonant elastic scattering and rotational excitation of molecules by electrons, followed by a review of non-resonant vibrational and electronic excitation. The reader is then introduced to resonance effects in electron scattering; electron-induced ionization and dissociation of molecules; and electron-molecule resonances. The ionization mechanisms and types of ions produced are highlighted, along with differential ionization cross sections. The final two chapters focus on electron attachment and detachment processes, paying particular attention to modes of electron capture by molecules such as via negative-ion resonant states. The collisional dynamics for a few selected atomic reactants are also described. Physicists will find this book extremely helpful.

Book Electron Phonon Interactions

Download or read book Electron Phonon Interactions written by Albert Rose and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1989 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is a radical departure from the conventional quantum mechanical approach to electron-phonon interactions. It translates the customary quantum mechanical analysis of the electron-phonon interactions carried out in Fourier space into a predominantly classical analysis carried out in real space. Various electron-phonon interactions such as the polar and nonpolar optical phonons, acoustic phonons that interact via deformation potential and via the piezoelectric effect and phonons in metals, are treated in this monograph by a single, relatively simple ?classical? model. This model is shown to apply to electron interactions with the deep lying X-ray levels of atoms, with plasmons and with Cerenkov radiation. The unifying concept that applies to all of these phenomena is a new definition of a coupling constant. The essentially classical interaction of an electron with its surrounding is clearly brought out to be the cause of spontaneous emission of phonons. The same concept also applies to the case of spontaneous emission of photons. While the bulk of this monograph deals with quanta of phonons and quanta of photons, a discussion of the acousto electric effect which is a purely classical phenomenon is presented. The newly defined coupling constant turns out to be valid too for this discussion. This universality of the coupling constant goes far beyond. It is equally applicable to amorphous materials. This significant application gives an analytic formulation of mobility in amorphous materials.

Book Interacting Electrons and Quantum Magnetism

Download or read book Interacting Electrons and Quantum Magnetism written by Assa Auerbach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the excitement and rapid pace of developments, writing pedagogical texts has low priority for most researchers. However, in transforming my lecture l notes into this book, I found a personal benefit: the organization of what I understand in a (hopefully simple) logical sequence. Very little in this text is my original contribution. Most of the knowledge was collected from the research literature. Some was acquired by conversations with colleagues; a kind of physics oral tradition passed between disciples of a similar faith. For many years, diagramatic perturbation theory has been the major theoretical tool for treating interactions in metals, semiconductors, itiner ant magnets, and superconductors. It is in essence a weak coupling expan sion about free quasiparticles. Many experimental discoveries during the last decade, including heavy fermions, fractional quantum Hall effect, high temperature superconductivity, and quantum spin chains, are not readily accessible from the weak coupling point of view. Therefore, recent years have seen vigorous development of alternative, nonperturbative tools for handling strong electron-electron interactions. I concentrate on two basic paradigms of strongly interacting (or con strained) quantum systems: the Hubbard model and the Heisenberg model. These models are vehicles for fundamental concepts, such as effective Ha miltonians, variational ground states, spontaneous symmetry breaking, and quantum disorder. In addition, they are used as test grounds for various nonperturbative approximation schemes that have found applications in diverse areas of theoretical physics.

Book Ultra relativistic Effects of Laser Beam and Electron Interactions

Download or read book Ultra relativistic Effects of Laser Beam and Electron Interactions written by Alexandru Mircea Popa and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest generation of high-power pulsed lasers has renewed interest in the ultra-relativistic effects produced by the interaction between laser beams and electrons. Synthesising previous research, this book presents a unitary treatment of the main effects that occur in the ultra-relativistic interactions between laser beams and electrons. It uses exact solutions of relativistic and classical quantum equations, including a new solution of the Dirac equation, to fully describe the field and model the main ultra-relativistic effects created within it.

Book Electron Stream Interaction with Plasmas

Download or read book Electron Stream Interaction with Plasmas written by Richard J. Briggs and published by Mit Press. This book was released on 1964-11-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study considers the instabilities that result when an electron beam is injected into a plasma. A number of different models of the system are considered, and all instabilities are classified according to whether they are convective instabilities (amplifying waves) or nonconvective (absolute) instabilities. The study also analyzes the instabilities in unbounded beam-plasma systems and in systems of finite extent transverse to the electron stream and gives a detailed consideration of the possibility of a strong interaction with the ions in a hot-electron plasma. In addition, the author presents mathematical criteria for identifying absolute instabilities and amplifying waves. These criteria are based only on an analysis of the dispersion equation of the system and are not restricted to beam-plasma systems. Two things need to be said about this book: the chapter on absolute and convective instabilities makes an important contribution to the field. Second, it should be pointed out that the theoretical results are reduced to a form which make them readily available to an experimentalist. Plasma physicists and electronic engineers will be interested in this work.

Book Quantum Theory of the Electron Liquid

Download or read book Quantum Theory of the Electron Liquid written by Gabriele Giuliani and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-06-19 with total page 779 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern electronic devices and novel materials often derive their extraordinary properties from the intriguing, complex behavior of large numbers of electrons forming what is known as an electron liquid. This book provides an in-depth introduction to the physics of the interacting electron liquid in a broad variety of systems, including metals, semiconductors, artificial nano-structures, atoms and molecules. One, two and three dimensional systems are treated separately and in parallel. Different phases of the electron liquid, from the Landau Fermi liquid to the Wigner crystal, from the Luttinger liquid to the quantum Hall liquid are extensively discussed. Both static and time-dependent density functional theory are presented in detail. Although the emphasis is on the development of the basic physical ideas and on a critical discussion of the most useful approximations, the formal derivation of the results is highly detailed and based on the simplest, most direct methods.

Book Atlas of Point Contact Spectra of Electron Phonon Interactions in Metals

Download or read book Atlas of Point Contact Spectra of Electron Phonon Interactions in Metals written by A.V. Khotkevich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The characteristics of electrical contacts have long attracted the attention of researchers since these contacts are used in every electrical and electronic device. Earlier studies generally considered electrical contacts of large dimensions, having regions of current concentration with diameters substantially larger than the characteristic dimensions of the material: the interatomic distance, the mean free path for electrons, the coherence length in the superconducting state, etc. [110]. The development of microelectronics presented to scientists and engineers the task of studying the characteristics of electrical contacts with ultra-small dimensions. Characteristics of point contacts such as mechanical stability under continuous current loads, the magnitudes of electrical fluctuations, inherent sensitivity in radio devices and nonlinear characteristics in connection with electromagnetic radiation can not be understood and altered in the required way without knowledge of the physical processes occurring in contacts. Until recently it was thought that the electrical conductivity of contacts with direct conductance (without tunneling or semiconducting barriers) obeyed Ohm's law. Nonlinearities of the current-voltage characteristics were explained by joule heating of the metal in the region of the contact. However, studies of the current-voltage characteristics of metallic point contacts at low (liquid helium) temperatures [142] showed that heating effects were negligible in many cases and the nonlinear characteristics under these conditions were observed to take the form of the energy dependent probability of inelastic electron scattering, induced by various mechanisms.

Book Electron Microprobe Analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopy in Geology

Download or read book Electron Microprobe Analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopy in Geology written by S. J. B. Reed and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-08-25 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 2005, this book covers the closely related techniques of electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) specifically from a geological viewpoint. Topics discussed include: principles of electron-target interactions, electron beam instrumentation, X-ray spectrometry, general principles of SEM image formation, production of X-ray 'maps' showing elemental distributions, procedures for qualitative and quantitative X-ray analysis (both energy-dispersive and wavelength-dispersive), the use of both 'true' electron microprobes and SEMs fitted with X-ray spectrometers, and practical matters such as sample preparation and treatment of results. Throughout, there is an emphasis on geological aspects not mentioned in similar books aimed at a more general readership. The book avoids unnecessary technical detail in order to be easily accessible, and forms a comprehensive text on EMPA and SEM for geological postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers, as well as those working in industrial laboratories.

Download or read book Electron Scattering written by Colm T. Whelan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-17 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a unity to physics; it is a discipline which provides the most fundamental understanding of the dynamics of matter and energy. To understand anything about a physical system you have to interact with it and one of the best ways to learn something is to use electrons as probes. This book is the result of a meeting, which took place in Magdalene College Cambridge in December 2001. Atomic, nuclear, cluster, soHd state, chemical and even bio- physicists got together to consider scattering electrons to explore matter in all its forms. Theory and experiment were represented in about equal measure. It was meeting marked by the most lively of discussions and the free exchange of ideas. We all learnt a lot. The Editors are grateful to EPSRC through its Collaborative Computational Project program (CCP2), lOPP, the Division of Atomic, Molecular, Optical and Plasma Physics (DAMOPP) and the Atomic Molecular Interactions group (AMIG) of the Institute of Physics for financial support. The smooth running of the meeting was enormously facilitated by the efficiency and helpfulness of the staff of Magdalene College, for which we are extremely grateful. This meeting marked the end for one of us (CTW) of a ten-year period as a fellow of the College and he would like to take this opportunity to thank the fellows and staff for the privilege of working with them.

Book Interaction Of Electromagnetic Waves With Electron Beams And Plasmas

Download or read book Interaction Of Electromagnetic Waves With Electron Beams And Plasmas written by Chuan Sheng Liu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994-05-18 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction of electromagnetic waves with matter has always been a fascinating subject of study. As matter in the universe is mostly in the plasma state, the study of electromagnetic waves in plasmas is of importance to astrophysics, space physics and ionospheric physics. The physics of electromagnetic wave interacting with electron beams and plasmas also serves as a basis for coherent radiation generation such as free electron laser and gyrotron and advanced accelerators. This monograph aims at reviewing the physical processes of linear and nonlinear collective interactions of electromagnetic waves with electron beams and unmagnetized plasmas.

Book Electron Dynamics in Molecular Interactions

Download or read book Electron Dynamics in Molecular Interactions written by Frank Hagelberg and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 925 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume aims at a comprehensive introduction into the theory of nonadiabatic molecular processes an increasingly relevant and rapidly expanding segment of molecular quantum dynamics. This very active and current field of research deals with molecular interactions involving transitions between electronic states, which occur typically in cases of reactive scattering between molecules, photoexcitation or strong vibronic and rotational coupling between electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom. The main objective of Electron Dynamics in Molecular Interactions is to provide a synoptic presentation of some very recent theoretical efforts and to contrast them with the more traditional models of nonadiabatic molecular processes. In these presented models derived from their quantum dynamical fundaments, their interrelations are discussed, and their characteristic applications to concrete chemical systems are also outlined. This volume also includes an assessment of the present status of electron dynamics and a report on novel developments to meet the current challenges in the field. There is a need for a systematic comparative treatise as nonadiabatic theories, which are of considerably higher complexity than the more traditional adiabatic approaches, are steadily gaining in importance. This volume addresses a broad readership ranging from physics or chemistry graduate students to specialists in the field of theoretical quantum dynamics.

Book Multiplets of Transition Metal Ions in Crystals

Download or read book Multiplets of Transition Metal Ions in Crystals written by Satoru Sugano and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiplets of Transition-Metal Ions in Crystals provides information pertinent to ligand field theory. This book discusses the fundamentals of quantum mechanics and the theory of atomic spectra. Comprised of 10 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the qualitative nature of the splitting of the energy level as well as the angular behavior of the wavefunctions. This text then examines the problem of obtaining the energy eigenvalues and eigenstates of the two-electron systems, in which two electrons are accommodated in the t2g and eg shells in a variety of ways. Other chapters discuss the ligand-field potential, which is invariant to any symmetry operation in the group to which symmetry of the system belongs. This book discusses as well the approximate method of expressing molecular orbitals (MO) by a suitable linear combination of atomic orbitals (AO). The final chapter discusses the MO in molecules and the self-consistent field theory of Hartree–Fock. This book is a valuable resource for research physicists, chemists, electronic engineers, and graduate students.
