Book ELECTRON BEAM MELTING OF URANIUM

Download or read book ELECTRON BEAM MELTING OF URANIUM written by and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feed stock prepared from ingot, dingot, and under-saltmelted U was melted by electron bombardment. Analysis of the ingots produced revealed that some Al, Cr, Mg, Mn, and Pb were volatilized from the melt. C was reduced when Zr was present in the feed material. H2 and N2 also were removed, the latter oniy when there was a relatively high concentration in the feed material. The work indicated the need for very slow melting rates or the casting of large diameter ingots for successful refinement of U. (auth).

Book Scrap Uranium Recycling Via Electron Beam Melting

Download or read book Scrap Uranium Recycling Via Electron Beam Melting written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program is underway at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) to recycle scrap uranium metal. Currently, much of the material from forging and machining processes is considered radioactive waste and is disposed of by oxidation and encapsulation at significant cost. In the recycling process, uranium and uranium alloys in various forms will be processed by electron beam melting and continuously cast into ingots meeting applicable specifications for virgin material. Existing vacuum processing facilities at LLNL are in compliance with all current federal and state environmental, safety and health regulations for the electron beam melting and vaporization of uranium metal. One of these facilities has been retrofitted with an auxiliary electron beam gun system, water-cooled hearth, crucible and ingot puller to create an electron beam melt furnace. In this furnace, basic process R & D on uranium recycling will be performed with the goal of eventual transfer of this technology to a production facility.

Book Characterization of Electron Beam Melted Uranium 6 Niobium Ingots

Download or read book Characterization of Electron Beam Melted Uranium 6 Niobium Ingots written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was undertaken at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to characterize uranium, 6% niobium ingots produced via electron beam melting, hearth refining and continuous casting and to compare this material with conventional VIM/skull melt /VAR material. Samples of both the ingot and feed material were analyzed for niobium, trace metallic elements, carbon, oxygen and nitrogen. Ingot samples were also inspected metallographically and via microprobe analysis.

Book Decarburication of Uranium Via Electron Beam Processing

Download or read book Decarburication of Uranium Via Electron Beam Processing written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many commercial and military applications, the successive Vacuum Induction Melting of uranium metal in graphite crucibles results in a product which is out of specification in carbon. The current recovery method involves dissolution of the metal in acid and chemical purification. This is both expensive and generates mixed waste. A study was undertaken at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to investigate the feasibility of reducing the carbon content of uranium metal using electron beam techniques. Results will be presented on the rate and extent of carbon removal as a function of various operating parameters.

Book Progress Toward Uranium Scrap Recycling Via Electron Beam Cold Hearth Refining

Download or read book Progress Toward Uranium Scrap Recycling Via Electron Beam Cold Hearth Refining written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 250 kW electron beam cold hearth refining (EBCHR) melt furnace at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has been in operation for over a year producing 5.5 in.-diameter ingots of various uranium alloys. Production of in-specification uranium-6%-niobium (U-6Nb) alloy ingots has been demonstrated using virgin feedstock. A vibratory scrap feeder has been installed on the system and the ability to recycle chopped U-6Nb scrap has been established. A preliminary comparison of vacuum arc remelted (VAR) and electron beam (EB) melted product is presented.

Book Compatibility of Molten Uranium Dioxide with Five Refractory Materials

Download or read book Compatibility of Molten Uranium Dioxide with Five Refractory Materials written by William A. Sanders and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of the compatibility of molten uranium dioxide with tungsten, tantalum, tantalum diboride, tantalum carbide and hafnium carbide was conducted to indicate combinations that may be useful in nuclear reactors that are to operate at temperatures above the melting point of uranium dioxide, 5000 F. The evaluations were conducted at a test temperature of 52200 F for a period of 15 minutes in a high-purity argon atmosphere. One compatibility test of molten uranium dioxide with tungsten was conducted at 55000 F. The tests were performed with the refractory material in the form of a crucible that contained a uranium dioxide charge. Crucible cross sections were studied after testing, and the degree of reaction between uranium dioxide and the various crucible materials was judged by the use of X-ray diffraction analysis, metallographic examination, microhardness measurements, and electron-beam microanalysis.
