New energy deposition, transmission, and reflection coefficients for electrons incident on plane slabs for angles of 0, 30, 60,7 5, and 89.9 deg and energies of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0,4 .0, 5.0, 6.0, and 10.0 MeV are presented, and methods for their use in electron dose calculations are developed. A method for electron dose calculations using the "straight-ahead" approximation is also developed and the various methods are compared and found to be in good agreement. Accurate and approximate methods of calculating bremsstrahlung dose are also derived and compared.

Book excerpt: The analysis takes into account the angular distribution of the incident protons and electrons and the angular distribution of the electron bremsstrahlung. The distribution with depth in the propellant is determined for the dose rate due to protons, for the dose rate due to electron bremsstrahlung, and for the deposition of stopped protons. Whereas the dose rates for monoenergetic protons or electrons are maximum at the surface of the propellant, the deposition of protons has its minimum at the surface and increases linearly with depth up to the range of the protons. For the case of protons, the maximum surface dose rate depends primarily on the total number of protons striking the surface, and only slightly on their energy, so long as their energy is sufficient for them to clearly penetrate the surface medium. Illustrative calculations are carried out for the Freden and White spectrum of protons and for the Walt et al. spectrum of electrons incident on thin-walled stainless steel vehicles carrying liquid H2 or liquid O2. The numerical results for O2 would be closely similar to those for biological materials. (Author).

Book excerpt: The EGS4 electron-photon Monte Carlo code has been used to study the characteristics of the bremsstrahlung x-rays generated from the interaction of circulating electrons with the residual gas in accelerator storage rings. Gas bremsstrahlung dose rates are given for various opening angles as a function of the electron beam energy ranging from 0.5--10 GeV. Photon and neutron dose rates, generated from various devices struck by gas bremsstrahlung in a synchrotron radiation beamline, are also presented along with the photon spectral and transmission results. The EGS4-predicted results are found to be in basic agreement with the measurements made at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory. Figures, equations, and a simple method useful for the photon-neutron shielding design for beamlines are provided.

Book excerpt: Bremsstrahlung production by energetic electrons stopping in a typical thick space vehicle wall has been calculated. Two incident electron energies were considered, 6 Mev and 4 Mev. The spectrum of emergent X-rays from behind the shield attenuation factor was calculated and compared with an experimental determination of the attenuation with essentially the same shield. The calculation and experiment agree to within a factor of about two or three. These results indicate that bremsstrahlung production could represent a radiation hazard to manned flight of some consequence. (Author).
