Book Electromyograph Biofeedback and the Treatment of Chronic Low Back Pain

Download or read book Electromyograph Biofeedback and the Treatment of Chronic Low Back Pain written by Clarissa Bush and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sixty-six chronic low back pain sufferers, recruited through the media, were randomly divided into three groups. Following an assessment consisting of psychological questionnaires, pain monitoring and measurement of paraspinal electromyogram (EMG), one group received paraspinal EMG biofeedback, and a second group received a placebo treatment. The third group received no intervention. Two further assessments were carried out on all groups immediately after and three months after treatment. All groups showed significant reductions in pain, anxiety, depression and paraspinal EMG, but there were no differences among the groups. A regression analysis failed to identify subject characteristics which predicted positive outcome in the biofeedback group, but the Evaluative scale of the MPQ and hypnotizability were significant predictors of outcome for the placebo group. The results are discussed in terms of a general placebo effect of participating in research designed to reduce pain. It is concluded that paraspinal EMG biofeedback is not an effective treatment for chronic low back pain in a non-hospitalized population." --

Book excerpt: The chapters of this book were prepared as task force reports under the aegis of the Biofeedback Society of America (BSA). The impetus for the present generation of task force reports can be dated back to 1982, when John D. Rugh, as President-Elect of the Society, announced that the updating of the task force reports would be given high priority during his term as President. An ad hoc Task Force Committee was appointed in 1983, and the committee set the following objectives: (1) solicit a widely based stream of input from all segments of the Biofeedback Society of America, (2) establish a peer review system to assure the highest degree of scholarship and an unbiased approach, (3) select for area authors only individuals who have profound knowledge of the area and who have demonstrated the ability to extend understanding by reviewing and criticizing the literature, (4) prepare all reports according to a standard ized format, and (5) publish all the reports simultaneously. Input came from several sources. Many people responded with ideas and suggestions to an announcement in the BSA Newsletter that the task force reports were being revised. In 1984, a symposium was conducted at the BSA annual meeting, which included round table dis cussions and dialogues between task force report authors and the BSA membership.

Book A Systematic Review of EMG Biofeedback and Musculoskeletal Pain

Download or read book A Systematic Review of EMG Biofeedback and Musculoskeletal Pain written by Michael G. Dzigiel and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Introduction: The purpose of this systematic review was to critically appraise current research regarding the use of EMG biofeedback in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain. Methods: Various databases were searched including Pubmed (708), CINAHL (232), OVID(6,297), SPORTSdiscuss (22), Google Scholar(51), and Physical Therapy Journal (4,300). A total of 16 articles met the inclusion/exclusion criteria for review. The search terms used were 'chronic pain', 'epidemiology', 'musculoskeletal pain', 'adult', 'biofeedback', 'surface EMG', 'EMG biofeedback', 'electromyographic biofeedback', 'pain', 'Physical Therapy', 'biofeedback training', and 'EMG' Results: Seven of the 16 studies identified a statistically significant decrease in musculoskeletal pain with EMG biofeedback treatment compared to control. Six of the 16 studies showed a statistically significant improvement at both the activity and participation levels. These six studies demonstrated improvement in depression, quality of life, function, aerobic fitness, and activity level in treatment versus control groups. Discussion: EMG Biofeedback has positive effects across all components of the ICF model. It is used across multiple diagnoses but does not appear to be superior to other treatment methods. Nine of the 16 studies did not identify a statistically significant difference for EMG biofeedback compared to controls or other treatments. Conclusion: There is minimal evidence to support the use of EMG biofeedback in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain. EMG biofeedback is effective in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain when compared to no treatment. However it is not more effective than other treatment methods such as cognitive behavioral therapy and exercise. Clinical Implications: According to the guidelines from the British Medical Journal (GRADE system), evidence in this systematic review is 'very low' quality and therefore the recommendation for the use of EMG biofeedback to reduce musculoskeletal pain is weak. Future Direction: Future research involving larger sample sizes, consistent methodology, and increased follow-up periods should be done to strengthen the clinical recommendation for EMG biofeedback." -- Abstract.
