Book excerpt: For electromagnetic wave propagation and scattering in an anisotropic random medium, we derive the Dyson equation for the mean field and the Bethe Salpeter equation for the correlation or the covariance of the field. With the random permittivity expressed in a general anisotropic form, the bilocal and the nonlinear approximations are employed to solve the Dyson equation and the ladder approximation to solve the Bethe Salpeter equation. The mean dyadic Green's function for a two-layer anisotropic random medium with arbitrary three-dimensional correlation functions has been investigated with the zeroth-order solutions to the Dyson equation under the nonlinear approximation. The effective propagation constants are calculated for the four characteristic waves associated with the coherent vector fields propagating in an anisotropic random-medium layer, which are the ordinary and extraordinary waves with upward- and downward-propagating vectors. The structure under study is the well-known periodic arrangement of rods and split-ring resonators, previously used in experimental setups. For the first time, the numerical results of this work show that fields propagating inside the metamaterial with a forward power direction exhibit a backward phase velocity and negative index of refraction. A new metamaterial design is presented that is less lossy than previous designs. The effects of numerical dispersion in the FDTD method are investigated for layered, anisotropic media. The numerical dispersion relation is derived for diagonally anisotropic media. The analysis is applied to minimize the numerical dispersion error of Huygens' plane wave sources in layered, uniaxial media. For usual discretization sizes, a typical reduction of the scattered field error on the order of 30 dB is demonstrated. The new FDTD method is then used to study the Angular Correlation Function (ACF) of the scattered fields from continuous random media with and without a target object present. The ACF is shown to be as much as 10 dB greater when a target object is present for situations where the target is undetectable by examination of the radar cross section only.

Focusing on the case of random rough surfaces, this book presents classical asymptotic models used to describe electromagnetic wave scattering. The authors begin by outlining the basic concepts relevant to the topic before moving on to look at the derivation of the scattered field under asymptotic models, based on the Kirchhoff-tangent plane, in order to calculate both the scattered field and the statistical average intensity. More elaborated asymptotic models are also described for dealing with specific cases, and numerical results are presented to illustrate these models. Comparisons with a reference numerical method are made to confirm and refine the theoretical validity domains. The final chapter derives the expressions of the scattering intensities of random rough surfaces under the asymptotic models. Its expressions are given for their incoherent contributions, from statistical calculations. Book excerpt: The effect of multiple scattering on the coherent wave propagation is discrete random media is studied for spherical and non-spherical dielectric scatterers as a function of frequency and volume concentration of scatterers. The first and second order probability distribution functions are specified and a self-consistent T-matrix approach together with Lax's quasi-crystalline approximation is used to derive dispersion equations whose singular solutions yield the complex propagation constant of the 'effective medium'. Various forms of pair-correlations were considered in the analysis; the self-consistent pair-correlation function is found to be well suited for a wide range of concentration of scatterers. The formalism is also found to be applicable for very high frequencies. The theoretical results obtained by this formalism were compared with experimental findings and the agreement is excellent. Book excerpt: Electromagnetic wave propagation and scattering in a sphere composed of an inhomogeneous medium having random variations in its permittivity are studied by using the Born approximation in solving the vector wave equation. The variations in the permittivity are taken to be isotropic and homogeneous, and are spatially characterized by a Gaussian correlation function. Temporal variations in the medium are not considered. Two particular problems are considered: (1) finding the far-zone electric field when an electric or magnetic dipole is situated at the center of the sphere, and (2) finding the electric field at the sphere's center when a linearly polarized plane wave is incident upon it. Expressions are obtained for the mean-square magnitudes of the scattered field components; it is found that the mean of the product of any two transverse components vanishes. The cases where the wavelength is much shorter than correlation distance of the medium and where it is much longer than it are both considered. (Author).
