Book excerpt: This thesis presents two significant results in the field of precision measurements in low-energy nuclear physics. Firstly, it presents a precise half-life determination of 11C, leading to the most precise ft-value for a beta decay transition between mirror nuclides, an important advance in the testing of the electroweak sector of the Standard Model. Secondly, it describes a high-precision mass measurement of 56Cu, a critical nucleus for determining the path of the astrophysical rapid-proton capture process, performed by the author using the LEBIT Penning trap at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. This new measurement resolves discrepancies in previously-reported calculated mass excesses. In addition, the thesis also presents the construction and testing of a radio-frequency quadrupole cooler and buncher that will be part of the future N = 126 factory at Argonne National Laboratory aimed at producing nuclei of interest for the astrophysical rapid-neutron capture process for the first time.

The Advanced Study Institute on "Nuclear Physics Applications on Ma terials Science" brought together scientists active in different but closely re lated fields to review and discuss selected topics of bulk properties of metals, semiconductors and insulators as well as properties of surfaces, interfaces and thin films. Most of the excellent lectures and oral presentations of the School are collected in part I of the present volume, while extended abstracts of scientific work presented as posters are added in part II. The pleasant site of the ASI at Viana do Castelo and the northern province of Portugal, Alto Minho, provided the stimulating atmosphere for an in spiring School. Many people contributed to the scientific and social success of the institute. Thanks are especially due to the members of the local organizing committee, N. Ayres de Campos, M. Fernanda da Silva, A. In 2005 it published its “Roadmap for Construction of Nuclear Physics Research Infrastructures in Europe”.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents significant new observations of nuclear wobbling, and thus expands our understanding of nuclear triaxiality and its prevalence in the nuclear chart. Triaxial nuclear shapes are a very rare phenomena and their experimental identification often relies on two unique signatures – nuclear wobbling motion and chiral rotation. While nuclear chirality is a well-studied phenomenon, experimental observations of wobbling nuclei are rather limited. With the identification of 135Pr and 187Au as wobblers, this work establishes triaxiality to be a general phenomenon present in different regions of the nuclear chart, irrespective of any particular spin or deformation. A major focus of this work is the detailed investigation of the different kinds of wobbling modes. Depending on the geometry of the nuclear system, wobbling can be classified into two types – longitudinal and transverse. This work has, for the first time, reported evidence of the possible coexistence of both forms of wobbling in a single nucleus. Another important result reported in this work is the very first observation of co-existing chiral and wobbling modes in the 135Pr nucleus. This thesis details the experimental methods that led to this breakthrough, along with pertinent theoretical interpretations.
