Book Inverse Acoustic and Electromagnetic Scattering Theory

Download or read book Inverse Acoustic and Electromagnetic Scattering Theory written by David Colton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has now been almost ten years since our first book on scattering theory ap peared [32]. At that time we claimed that "in recent years the development of integral equation methods for the direct scattering problem seems to be nearing completion, whereas the use of such an approach to study the inverse scattering problem has progressed to an extent that a 'state of the art' survey appears highly desirable". Since we wrote these words, the inverse scattering problem for acoustic and electromagnetic waves has grown from being a few theoreti cal considerations with limited numerical implementations to a weH developed mathematical theory with tested numerical algorithms. This maturing of the field of inverse scattering theory has been based on the realization that such problems are in general not only nonlinear but also improperly posed in the sense that the solution does not depend continuously on the measured data. This was emphasized in [32] and treated with the ideas and tools available at that time. Now, almost ten years later, these initial ideas have developed to the extent that a monograph summarizing the mathematical basis of the field seems appropriate. This book is oUf attempt to write such a monograph. The inverse scattering problem for acoustic and electromagnetic waves can broadly be divided into two classes, the inverse obstacle problem and the inverse medium problem.

Book excerpt: This book presents current research trends in the field of underwater acoustic wave direct and inverse problems. Until very recently, little has been published concerning model-based inversions of the boundaries and material constants of finite-sized targets located either in the water column or the sediments. This text is the first to investigate inverse problems in an ocean environment with a heavy emphasis placed on the description and resolution of the forward scattering problem.

Book Inverse Schr dinger Scattering in Three Dimensions

Download or read book Inverse Schr dinger Scattering in Three Dimensions written by Roger G. Newton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the laws of physics are expressed in the form of differential equations; that is our legacy from Isaac Newton. The customary separation of the laws of nature from contingent boundary or initial conditions, which has become part of our physical intuition, is both based on and expressed in the properties of solutions of differential equations. Within these equations we make a further distinction: that between what in mechanics are called the equations of motion on the one hand and the specific forces and shapes on the other. The latter enter as given functions into the former. In most observations and experiments the "equations of motion," i. e. , the structure of the differential equations, are taken for granted and it is the form and the details of the forces that are under investigation. The method by which we learn what the shapes of objects and the forces between them are when they are too small, too large, too remote, or too inaccessi ble for direct experimentation, is to observe their detectable effects. The question then is how to infer these properties from observational data. For the theoreti cal physicist, the calculation of observable consequences from given differential equations with known or assumed forces and shapes or boundary conditions is the standard task of solving a "direct problem. " Comparison of the results with experiments confronts the theoretical predictions with nature.

Download or read book Inverse Acoustic and Electromagnetic Scattering Theory written by David Colton and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-06 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inverse scattering problem is central to many areas of science and technology such as radar, sonar, medical imaging, geophysical exploration and nondestructive testing. This book is devoted to the mathematical and numerical analysis of the inverse scattering problem for acoustic and electromagnetic waves. In this fourth edition, a number of significant additions have been made including a new chapter on transmission eigenvalues and a new section on the impedance boundary condition where particular attention has been made to the generalized impedance boundary condition and to nonlocal impedance boundary conditions. Brief discussions on the generalized linear sampling method, the method of recursive linearization, anisotropic media and the use of target signatures in inverse scattering theory have also been added.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the Proceedings of a meeting held at Montpellier from November 27th to December 1st 1989 and entitled "Inverse Problems Multicen tennials Meeting". It was held in honor of two major centennials: the foundation of Montpellier University in 1289 and the French Revolution of 1789. The meet ing was one of a series of annual meetings on interdisciplinary aspects of inverse problems organized in Montpellier since 1972 and known as "RCP 264". The meeting was sponsored by the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (con tract GR 264) and by the Direction des Recherches et Etudes Techniques (contract 88 CO 283). The Proceedings are presented by chapters on different topics, the choice of topic often being arbitrary. The chapter titles are "Tomographic Inverse Problems", "Distributed Parameters Inverse Problems", "Spectral Inverse Problems (Exact Methods)", "Theoretical hnaging", "Wave Propagation and Scattering Problems (hnaging and Numerical Methods)", "Miscellaneous Problems", "Inverse Methods and Applications to Nonlinear Problems". In each chapter but the first, the papers have been sorted alphabetically according to author*. In the first chapter, a set of theoretical papers is presented first, then more applied ones. There are so many well-known and excellent lectures that I will not try to refer to them all here (the reader will be easily convinced by reading the Table of Contents). My comments at the conference are summarized by the short scientific introduction at the beginning of the volume.

Book Ultrasonics International 91

Download or read book Ultrasonics International 91 written by Sam Stuart and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrasonics International 91 is a documentation of conference proceedings that discusses the status and future of acoustic microscopy and its application to materials research, especially focusing on its quantitative analyses. Acoustic microscopy, using focused waves, has been receiving increased attention as a technology applicable to materials characterization at the microscopic scale. In acoustic microscopy, the excitation and propagation of leaky surface acoustic waves (LSAWs) in the environment of the coupling liquid at the solid specimens are observed. Three types of the systems have been developed: point-focus-beam (PFB), line-focus-beam (LFB), and directional PFB acoustic microscopes. In this paper, a brief history of the practical developments is first presented, followed by LFB acoustic microscopy for quantitative material characterization and some applications concerned with characterization of elastic anisotropy and inhomogeneity of electronic materials, such as LiNb03 and LiTa03 single crystals, and thin-film characterization. This book gives a comprehensive account of the majority of the oral and poster contributions made during the conference, and makes a valuable addition to a student or researchers’ ultrasonic literature.

  • ISBN : 3034870140
  • Pages : 184 pages

Download or read book Inverse Problems written by CANNON and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume contains manuscripts of lectures or topics related to the lectures which were given at the conference on "Inverse Problems" at the mathematical Research Institute at Oberwolfach. The conference took place during the week of May 18-24, 1986, and was managed by the editors. Recalling Professor Joseph Keller's paper entitled Inverse Problems, American Mathematical Monthly, 83 (1976), we give two direct quotes. "We call two problems inverses of one another if the formulation of each involves all or part of the solution of the other. Often, for historical reasons, one of the two problems has been studied extensively for some time, while the other is newer and not so well understood. In such cases, the former is called the direct problem, while the latter is called the inverse problem. " "The main sources of inverse problems are science and engineering. Often these problems concern the determination of the properties of some inaccess ible regions from observations on the boundary of that region. " Often, inverse problems are not well posed. This increases the difficulty in their analysis and numerical solution. As can be seen from the table of content of this volume, the conference covered inverse problems in scattering theory, seismology, tomography, estimation of coefficients and source terms in parabolic and elliptic differential equations, the inverse Sturm-Liouville problem, and numerical methods. The editors wish to thank Professor M. Barner and his co-workers of the Mathematical Research Institute for their help in creating the conference.

Book Inverse Problems in Acoustic and Electromagnetic Scattering

Download or read book Inverse Problems in Acoustic and Electromagnetic Scattering written by Changjian Zou and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For acoustic scattering we consider the inverse problem for a complex scatterer, which might be composed of both inhomogeneous anisotropic mediums and impenetrable obstacles. It is shown that the fixed-frequency scattering amplitude uniquely determines the scattering support of a complex scatterer, disregarding its contents. We also study a special kind of transmission problem. For electromagnetic scattering, we develop a direct scheme of imaging multiple electromagnetic scatterers. The multiple scatterers may consists of both inhomogeneities and impenetrable perfect electromagnetic conductive obstacles. Moreover, there might be extended components presented simultaneously in the multiple scatterers. The proposed reconstruction scheme is based on an imaging functional which can be directly calculated without any inversion involved. We also provide a heuristic principle study for this imaging scheme. We also provide extensive numerical study to illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the scheme.
