Book The Vascular Pole of the Renal Glomerulus of Rat

Download or read book The Vascular Pole of the Renal Glomerulus of Rat written by Marlies Elger and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997-10-10 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge of the architecture of the renal glomerulus is a prerequisite for understanding both glomerular function and pathology. Glomerular filtration depends on comparably high intracapillary hydrostatic pressures. These high pressures must be balanced by commensurate counterforces to maintain structural integrity. Elevated pressures can damage the glomerulus. The "window" for pressures high enough for effective filtration and yet tolerable to the glomerulus is narrow. Precise regulation is therefore necessary to keep intraglomerular pressure within an appropriate range. This study provides a comprehensive description of the glomerular arterioles, which are the vessels primarily responsible for the regulation of intraglomerular pressures. It thereby describes the structures which may be presumed to generate counterforces needed to assure structural stability. The arterioles are closely associated with the supporting system comprised of the intra- and extraglomerular mesangium. The extraglomerular mesangium forms a spider-like clamp providing a mechanical interconnection of all components of the vascular pole. At the same time, it may act as a tension receptor, i.e. as a sensor of intraglomerular pressures. Due to its intimate relationship to the macula densa, the extraglomerular mesangium receives information on the distal solute delivery and therefore may act as the integrative center within the juxtaglomerular apparatus. The close spatial association between the afferent and efferent arterioles at the vascular pole suggests a direct regulatory interaction between both arterioles. In addition, the specific wall structure of the efferent arteriole exhibiting the features of a shear stress receptor suggests new pathways for feedback regulation of glomerular hemodynamics.

Book Dietary Reference Intakes for Water Potassium Sodium Chloride and Sulfate

Download or read book Dietary Reference Intakes for Water Potassium Sodium Chloride and Sulfate written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-06-18 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dietary Reference Intakes for Water, Potassium, Sodium, Chloride, and Sulfate The Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) are quantitative estimates of nutrient intakes to be used for planning and assessing diets for healthy people. This new report, the sixth in a series of reports presenting dietary reference values for the intakes of nutrients by Americans and Canadians, establishes nutrient recommendations on water, potassium, and salt for health maintenance and the reduction of chronic disease risk. Dietary Reference Intakes for Water, Potassium, Sodium, Chloride, and Sulfate discusses in detail the role of water, potassium, salt, chloride, and sulfate in human physiology and health. The major findings in this book include the establishment of Adequate Intakes for total water (drinking water, beverages, and food), potassium, sodium, and chloride and the establishment of Tolerable Upper Intake levels for sodium and chloride. The book makes research recommendations for information needed to advance the understanding of human requirements for water and electrolytes, as well as adverse effects associated with the intake of excessive amounts of water, sodium, chloride, potassium, and sulfate. This book will be an invaluable reference for nutritionists, nutrition researchers, and food manufacturers.

Book Anesthesiology A Problem Based Learning Approach

Download or read book Anesthesiology A Problem Based Learning Approach written by Tracey Straker and published by Anesthesiology a Problem Based. This book was released on 2018-11-12 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linking existing knowledge to new knowledge by presenting it in the form of a case or a problem is a popular and effective educational approach resulting in better retention of the knowledge and improved ability to apply that knowledge to solve real problems. This problem-based learning (PBL) method was introduced into medical education at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, in 1969. Since then it has been widely incorporated into secondary, undergraduate, and graduate education in a variety of disciplines worldwide. This new volume for the Anesthesiology Problem-Based Learning series reviews topics in general anesthesiology utilizing the PBL approach. Each chapter deals with conditions and problems in anesthesia practice presented as a case stem with questions to encourage critical thinking, followed by an evidence-based discussion and multiple-choice questions for self-assessment. Current in its knowledge of organ systems and management, the text keeps pace with new technology, new drugs, and new surgical techniques coupled with current guidelines for anesthetic management. Cases highlight the practical issues that arise in the operating room and offers solutions for them. The book can be used to review an upcoming clinical case or as a PBL tool. The Stem Case and Key Questions and Discussion sections can serve as the basis for interactive learning experiences for study groups or as a broad yet in-depth clinical review of the specialty for the individual learner. Self-assessment questions can be used as a measure of knowledge acquisition or simply as a question bank to prepare for examinations.

Book Postoperative Critical Care for Cardiac Surgical Patients

Download or read book Postoperative Critical Care for Cardiac Surgical Patients written by Ali Dabbagh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-29 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiac surgical procedures are among the most common and most complicated forms of surgery worldwide and the postoperative period is characterized by complex challenges. Among the factors determining ultimate clinical outcome, postoperative critical care is of major importance. This book adopts a clinical approach in explaining and analyzing the course of clinical care in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Since the postoperative clinical status is directly influenced by preoperative and intraoperative factors, the early chapters briefly examine preoperative issues and the intraoperative course of cardiac surgery, with particular attention to anesthesia and the process of cardiopulmonary bypass. Subsequent chapters primarily address the critical care of patients by means of an organ-oriented approach, which will enable the reader to use the text as a "cookbook" of cardiac intensive care. This book is intended for use in daily practice by cardiac surgeons, cardiac anesthesiologists, intensivists and cardiac intensive care nurses.

Book Hormonal Regulation of Fluid and Electrolytes

Download or read book Hormonal Regulation of Fluid and Electrolytes written by John R. Claybaugh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of this book has developed over the past fi fteen years as interest in the water and electrolyte disturbances associated with most environmental settings moved from a research area of descriptive discovery to one dealing with the mechanisms responsible for the previously observed disturbances. Most of the contributing authors have been involved in both aspects of this evolution of research, focusing on those problems associated with body fluid and electrolyte balance and searching for hormonal explanations. What did not accompany this transition, however, was a source of information encompassing the area of interest. Instead, the previous format of environmentally focused symposia, reviews, and books continued to be the only sources available. For instance, various books deal with the physiology of high altitude, space, or exercise but do not necessarily provide adequate coverage of water and electrolyte disturbances. To our knowledge, the format of this book is unique. We have made the central focus water and electrolyte physiology with an emphasis on endocrinology and tried to comprehensively cover this area of physiology in some of the more heavily studied environments. This book too, then, will have its limitations in coverage. For instance, in-depth coverage of the respiratory and cardiovascular responses to the high altitude en vironment will not be found, but since these areas are so integrally associated with water and electrolyte regulation they are not ignored.

Book Diuretics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rainer F. Greger
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 364279565X
  • Pages : 535 pages

Download or read book Diuretics written by Rainer F. Greger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The action of diuretics including cellular mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics, and clinical usage, with much emphasis placed on the most recent findings on the pharmacodynamics of the respective drugs. During the past twenty-five years since volume 14 on Diuretica was published in the Handbook series, the cellular mechanisms of action of diuretics have slowly been unravelled. Today, the role of action within the target cells is known for most of the substances discussed. This has provided a new basis not only for the understanding of drug action but also for secondary effects and interactions. The book represents a comprehensive reference work on the diverse groups of diuretics which are among the most frequently prescribed medications.
