Book The Manufacture of Chemicals by Electrolysis Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manufacture of Chemicals by Electrolysis The idea of a series of books on Electro-Chemistry emanated not from me, but from Messrs. Constable. Some years back I wrote for them a book called "Practical Electro-Chemistry," intended to cover a great part of the ground of knowledge then extant. Fortunately, knowledge has a habit of growing and of propagating its kind, and my book, in consequence of this, became a "back number." The subject of Electro-Chemistry is so ramified and specialized that it was impossible for one man to make a survey of the whole field. This fact is the genesis of the present series in which those who have accurate and intimate knowledge of the various branches of electro-chemistry have undertaken the work for which they are particularly qualified. It will be readily understood that, as the series of books was started at an early period of the war, many contributors were engaged in work of national and primary importance, and were unable, however willing, to apply themselves at the moment to exacting literary work. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the American Committee on Electrolysis, 1921 While this report supersedes the preliminary report of 1916, it should, unless the principals see fit to discontinue the work of the main committee, be considered as in the nature of a progress report and not as final, as it is impossible at the present time to finally answer many of the outstanding questions involved. Also it is to be understood that the report is confined to the technical and engi neering aspects of the subject and does not attempt to deal with matters of policy or with legal questions, such as the rights and responsibilities of the several interests concerned. At times great differences of Opinion between members Of the Committee have arisen, but the subjects differed upon have been patiently discussed in subcommittee meetings, and in some cases tests have been made and a final discussion held on the subject by the main committee until unanimity of opinion existed. The results as thus determined are herein recorded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Electrolysis and Electrosynthesis of Organic Compounds Classic Reprint

Download or read book Electrolysis and Electrosynthesis of Organic Compounds Classic Reprint written by Walther Lob and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrolysis and Electrosynthesis of Organic Compounds In the two and a half years that have passed since the appearance of the first edition of the present work, the application of the electric current in organic chemistry has undergone such a marked development that the book in its original form could no longer claim to give an adequate idea of our present knowledge of organic electrolysis and electrosynthesis. During these last two years in particular a series of important researches which systematically invade this new field of chemistry have been brought out in rapid succession. Since I am now engaged in the preparation of a new German edition, the desire of Dr. H. W. F. Lorenz to translate the book affords an excellent opportunity for presenting the revised and completed edition directly to his fellow countrymen. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrolysis, and Its Application to the Treatment of Disease The polypus was so much reduced in size, that it could not be seen either through the nasal passages or in the mouth, and only a small portion remained that could be felt by the finger. Improvement began soon after the electrolytic treatment was commenced. Case IV. Fibrous Tumor of the Uterus - I have had under observa tion a case of fibrous tumor of the uterus, and, although the electrolytic process by means of the introduction of needles has not been employed, it may be proper to refer to it in this connection. The patient is under the care of Dr. Peaslee, who desired me to test the effects of some form Of electrolyzation. The tumor is sub - peritoneal in char acter, on the right side, and about the size of the two fists. The resultant symptoms of which the patient especially complained, were severe shoot ing-pains down the right leg, together with a decided anaesthesia, and loss of power that seriously interfered with locomotion. I alternately passed both currents through the tumor, using the faradic internally and the gal vanio externally. Book Technologic Papers of the Bureau of Standards

Download or read book Technologic Papers of the Bureau of Standards written by E. B. Rosa and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technologic Papers of the Bureau of Standards: Special Studies in Electrolysis Mitigation, No; 2, Electrolysis From Electric Railway Currents and Its Prevention an Experimental Test on a System of Insulated Negative Feeders in St. Louis While it is true that insulated feeders have been used abroad for many years, they have found no application in this country until within the last few years, and no comprehensive experimental data as to their operation has been published. Moreover, the feeder systems that have been used abroad have for the most part been used in connection with boosters, and the use of insulated feeders has usually been associated with the use of boosters in the minds of most engineers in this country. It is only natural, therefore, that engineers should be reluctant to install feeder systems of this character in the absence of any experimental data showing their effectiveness for accomplishing the purposes intended. It has, therefore, been necessary, in order to get adequate experimental data bearing on these problems, to install some experimental systems expressly for the purpose, and work of this sort has already been done in a few places, with the cooperation of electric railway companies. In making these installations localities were selected where conditions may be considered as normal and fairly representative of average conditions in American cities. The systems installed have been designed in accordance with the demands of service conditions, and are, therefore, of such nature that the experimental data obtained in connection with them is of a very practical character. Additional work of this kind is contemplated, and it is hoped through these investigations to accumulate evidence which will establish beyond doubt the practical possibilities of insulated negative feeder systems as a means of taking care of electrolysis troubles. In connection with the general investigations that have been carried out by the Bureau of Standards for the past two or three years a considerable amount of preliminary work was done during the summer of 1912 in the city of St. Louis, as well as in other places. It was found that conditions in St. Louis were not exceptional, but that, in common with many other American cities, more or less trouble from electrolysis was experienced, and the tests showed that there was need for improvement in this direction. Download or read book Special Studies in Electrolysis Mitigation Vol 2 written by E. B. Rosa and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Special Studies in Electrolysis Mitigation, Vol. 2: Electrolysis From Electric Railway Currents and Its Prevention, an Experimental Test on a System of Insulated Negative Feeders in St. Louis In making these tests the engineers of the Bureau of Standards had the active cooperation of the officials of the United Railways Co., who furnished all necessary data in regard to track layout, feeder installations, car schedules, etc., which were required in order to design in detail a suitable system for the transmission of the current and its return to the power stations in a manner to take care of the traffic adequately and at the same time eliminate in a large measure future trouble from electrolysis. Based on these data and the experimental data obtained by the Bureau of Standards a thorough study of the whole situation was made, and the conclusion was arrived at that the best way to take care of electrolysis troubles was through the installation of insulated negative feeders. Book Solution and Electrolysis Classic Reprint

Download or read book Solution and Electrolysis Classic Reprint written by William Cecil Dampier Whetham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Solution and Electrolysis When we dissolve sodium chloride in water an absorp tion of heat is observed. That is to say, if both salt and water when separate are at the temperature of the air, after the solution is formed its temperature is lower. On the other hand caustic potash gives an evolution of heat on dissolving and the temperature rises. During solution there are usually changes in volume. In all but rare cases contraction occurs, and the volume of the resultant solution is less than the sum of the volumes of the solvent and the substance dissolved, or solvend. The boiling point of a salt solution is higher than that of pure water; and when it is remembered that a liquid boils when the pressure of its vapour is equal to the atmospheric pressure acting on it, we see at once that this statement is equivalent to saying that the vapour pressure of water is reduced by the dissolved salt. The steam which comes off however is the steam of pure water and will be found to assume the temperature at which pure water boils. Thermometers are graduated by marking on them the places at which the mercury stands at the freezing point and boiling point of water. It will be now seen why it is necessary during the latter operation to put the instrument in the steam and not in the water, which may contain impurities and be consequently boiling at a temperature slightly above 100 C. - its normal boiling point. Closely connected with this lowering of the vapour pressure is the lowering of the freezing point also pro duced by the substance in solution. Thus salt water does not freeze at a temperature low enough to solidify fresh water. Here again it is important to observe that the ice frozen out is the ice of pure water. Sometimes, par ticularly if the process of freezing has been rapid, particles of solid salt are shut in by the ice, and therefore redissolve when it is melted, but they are quite distinctly separated from the solid ice and never crystallize out in combination with it.
