Book excerpt: Electrophoretic paints, commonly known as electrocoat or -paint, are organic coatings dispersed in water, carrying an electric charge. This enables the paint for deposition onto a metal, which is carrying the opposite charge. Resulting from this special way of application are special needs for formulating its coating: This textbook shows requirements and particularities for the electrocoat process and its troubleshooting. It illustrates the theoretical basics of electro-deposition, paint formulation, manufacturing, application process in addition to failures and countermeasures of the electrocoat process. Newcomers and practitioners alike get and a comprehensive overview over the wide field of electrocoats as well as deeper insights into this technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, a number of textbooks on forensic science have been published, most of them directed to two groups, viz. the students of forensic science, and the customers so to say, (prosecutors, police officers, judges, defense lawyers). In this book, while covering fundamental concepts, we try to go a little further and address also active workers in the field of forensic chemistry. This is mainly achieved by relatively nu merous literature references. We hope that they may assist the forensic chemist in penetrating further into the subjects covered in this volume. At the end of most chapters there are examples of actual cases handled at the Swedish National Laboratory of Forensic Science. Many of these cases could, no doubt, have been investigated in greater detail, but they reflect the compromises often necessary for achieving a reasonable turnover. Some parts of the book are quite strongly colored by the personal opinions of the authors. We felt that these passages will give a little more life to the text than in other treatises of a more objective, but possibly duller character. The authors welcome all constructive criticism which will help to improve the book, should there be a second edition.

Book Water Soluble Polymers

Download or read book Water Soluble Polymers written by N. Bikales and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water-soluble polymers have been attracting increasing atten tion because of their utility in industrial applications of great current concern. Perhaps preeminent among these is their ability to flocculate suspended solids, e.g., wastes in municipal sew age-treatment plants or pulp in papermaking. other important appli cations are to aid in so-called secondary recovery of petroleum, to reduce turbulent friction of water, and as components of water-based finishes developed in response to environmental con straints. Some water-soluble polymers have shown interesting bio logic activity, which is being investigated further. This book is based on papers presented at a symposium held by the American Chemical Society, Division of Organic Coatings and Plastics Chemistry, in New York City on 30-31 August 1972. The large attendance and the favorable response of the audience con firmed not only our view of the importance of the field but also the need to bring these topics together. The chapters in this book are generally enlarged and more detailed, with more complete bibliographies, than the papers presented at the Symposium. They include not only the important applications described above, but also descriptions of new syntheses and characterization methods.

Book Nonpolluting Coatings and Coating Processes

Download or read book Nonpolluting Coatings and Coating Processes written by J. Gardon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecological requirements are forcing a change in tech nology of industrially applied coatings. At present sol vent-borne coatings dominate this field but in the next few years rapidly increasing use will be made of aqueous coatings, electrocoating, solvent-free liquid coatings which can be cured by U. V.-light or electronbeam, and powder coatings. This monograph describes some recent developments in these new "non-polluting" coating technologies. It is impossible to predict how big a share each of these novel coatings will take from the conventional in dustrial finishes market which at present represents an annual volume of about one billion dollars. In all likeli hood each will find its own specialized use. We hope that this monograph will help the reader to form a perspective of the various novel coatings, their method of application, their advantages and their limitations. J. L. Gardon Joseph W. Book Applications of Polymers

Download or read book Applications of Polymers written by Raymond Seymour and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural polymers, such as proteins, starch, cellulose, hevea rubber, and gum which have been available for centuries, have been applied as materials for food, leather, sizings, fibers, structures, waterproofing, and coatings. During the past century, the use of both natural and syn thetic polymers has been expanded to include more intricate applications, such as membranes, foams, medicinals, conductors, insulators, fibers, films, packaging and applications requiring high modulus at elevated temperatures. The topics in this symposium which are summarized in this book are illustrative of some of the myriad applications of these ubiquitous mater ials. As stated in forecast in the last chapter in this book, it is cer tain that revolutionary applications of polymers will occur during the next decades. Hopefully, information presented in other chapters in this book will catalyze some of these anticipated applications. It is appropriate that these reports were presented at an American Chemical Society Polymer Science and Engineering Division Award Symposium honoring Dr. O.A. Battista who has gratifying to note that Phillips Pet roleum Company, which has paved the way in applications of many new poly mers, is the sponsor of this important award. We are all cheerfully expressing our thanks to this corporate spon sor and to Distinguished Professor Raymond B. Seymour of the University of Southern Mississippi who served as the organizer of this symposium and editor of this important book.
