Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The electrochemistry of[Co{CH(Co2Et)C(TMS)C(SO2Ph)}(eta5-C5H5)(PPh3)](1) was investigated. Exhaustive bulk electrochemical oxidation of 1 afforded a furan product isolated in 82% yield. The furan product was also isolated in good yield by the use of chemical oxidizing agents. Treatment of the furan with excess iron(III) chloride also afforded a butenolide product. Redox promoted reactions of 1 with phosphites and alkynes were also studied. Cyclic voltammetry studies of cobalt allene complex [Co{C(=CH(Co2Et))CH(So2Ph)}(eta5-C5H5)(PPh3)] (2) revealed a chemically irreversible oxidation at +0.35 V and a chemically irreversible reduction at -2.50 V vs Fc/Fc. Exhaustive bulk electrochemical oxidation experiments showed this oxidation to be a three electron process. The electrolysis product was not identified. [Co{C(C6H5)=C(C6H5)C(=NC6H4-CH3)}(eta5-C5H5)(PPh3)] (3) undergoes a chemically irreversible oxidation at +0.01 V vs Fc/Fc+ and a chemically irreversible reduction at -2.38 V vs Fc/Fc+. Electrochemical and chemical reduction of 3 results in a product having a chemically irreversible two electron oxidation wave at -2.66 V vs Fc/Fc+ and a chemically reversible reduction wave at E0 = -1.22 V. The reduction product was not identified. Preliminary electrocatalytic ligand substitution reactions of 3 were conducted.
