He rejects the surface theory so far as the animal body is concerned, and, though he passed currents of 3000 milliamperes, he explained their harmlessness by absence of excitation, or, rather, on the hypothesis that these currents exercise, on the nervous centres and muscles, an inhibitory action of the kind studied by Dr. Brown-sequ'ard; and he considers that this inhibitory action is shown by some of the phenomena above described.
